Title: New guy and 88 t-bird sport(56k beware)
Post by: droptop93 on July 04, 2010, 09:51:17 PM
Hello people,,, been on here awhile but mainly reading. Bought my sone an 88 sport bird and just got done with HO conversion.  The original ,motor had 187k mile on it and started to get a little knock inbottom end, so I freshend an extar 302 I had sitting around. And also had a few SD HO computers.

Still need a serp belt and finish up the exhaust. ( converting to dual exhaust).

Combo consist of, stock bottomed 302( rebuilt), ported E7's, FMS 1.6 roller rockers, Explorer intake, 65mm TB, stock mustang headers, off raod x-pipe, and will be installing 2.5 Dynomax lers. Also have waiting to be installed is a 8.8 from an 87 Turbo bird with 3.73's.

My question is what do you guys do for tail pipes? Where does the mustang pipe have to be modified to make them fit?

here are couple pics of car...

Welcome!!! For tail pipes, I bought 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent Mustang tails and my choice of tips. I had to have a few inches added, but the have been great.

Thanks,,, I am looking at the Dynomax kit at Summit, since Dynomax is giving a $75 rebate on exhaust kits...

Ive been building Mustang for years(since 93), and this car is pretty cool and have to restrain myself, from going mod crazy. Specially since I bought this car for my son. he gets his lisence this month and really doesnt neet a hot-rod to start. As he get drive time, under his belt, we will start little mods together, and I can pass the torch on to him.

Yes. I would love to see the interior shots too. Nice car. Very clean on the exterior. TC wheels look good too.

My exhaust I did a flowmaster aluminized Mustang tail pipes with 18"x 3" tips. Make sure you do not go any less than the 16" tips or you will not have the length to reach the bumper cover. I also used mustang exhaust hangers on the frame and bolted into the stock location where the tbird ones are in the rear. One hanger had to be slightly modified. Then I cut off the hangers on the new tailpipes to relocate them where I needed too and welded them in. I am a finiky guy, so I spend close to half a day doing my complete exhaust at work on a hoist. I had to extend the flow tube about 3-4 inches and pushed the magnaflow lers flush with the thunderbird ler hanger. The best parts was I used torqtite clamps on my exhaust for easy assembly and adjustments.

Will get some interior shot up soon... Got new motor in and fired it up open X-piped and she ran fine.. Well today mocked up some lers so I could test drive and now she is acting crazy. It will crank, but REV and then die. And if I turn key,, in run psoition, can hear a relay clicking every few seconds and fuel pump kicks on liek when key os turned for 1st time.

When doing the HO swap I did swap injector hanress for a mustang harness, and also swapped 02 Harness, since t-bird wasnt long enough with 02's moved to X-pipe..  Going to swap out the injector harness for the bird one and see if that is what is making it act CooCoo...

Unplug to 02's just to make sure it will run. Injector harness should be the same. O2's could be different. Try running codes. If you do run codes, do it before you unplug the 02's.

Yea this is my sons 1st car.. Matter of fact he doesnt even have his liscence yet. Gets them July 11th...

The car is clean,, just the dash is crack, but will be getting one of those over lays.  We are going to d a few intieror mods,a s well, already installed the SVO steering wheel, and will be adding 86GT Halo's to the seats.. When I 1st got the car for him, installed a new CD player w/Ipod hook up and added some subs for him.  The tubro rims are temps, and lookign for something different now.

Jeeze you're nice to your son. My first car was the '88 v-6 and my parents always said "You will never have a v-8 while you're in our house!!!"

Nice looking car!

Tell ya guys, if it isnt one thing its another.  Turned out to be the 02 harness not being wired the same. so I lengthened the stock 02 harness.. Got it running and now she has a skip. Pulled plug wires on cap to find what cylinder(s), and it turns out #2 & #7 are the problem cylinders.  Has new cap, wires, rotor, and plugs and she is getting firs at cylinders.  Gonna pull upper and check injetcors..

Anyway here are some interior shots.. Its little dirty in pics, and still have to swap halo's on to seats.

This thing has about all options possible. Dual power seats, auto dim lights, power fuel door and trunk release, power windows, climate control, power sun roof, etc.. Pretty much everything on it is power. Even the keyless entry works:D  had cruise control untii I swapped out the steering wheel for the 85-86GT/SVO wheel.  The car had factory radio, but diplay was out so I swapped it for the JVC headunit, new speakers and put 2 Punch 8 subs in trunk for my son.

Alright!!! Got it worked out and took her for maden voyage this evening. Turns out 2 rocker arms backed off and were loose. It runs good, but needs tail pipes. Found some stock 05 GT lers and they were in budget,,,FREEBIEs:D.. So right now it has off raod x-pipe with open 05 lers. Sounds real good when reving but cant stand it at idle, never was a fan of dumps. So takeing it to exhaust shop tomorrow to have some tail pipes made.  Next project is to put the turbo bird 8.8 with the 73's. And after home projects are finished, will rebuild tranny so sone will have fresh motor and tranny.  That way I dont haev to worry about him riding when school starts..

Anyway people,, once tail pipes are on will get her all spit shined up and get some new pictures up. Also might even swap the Pony rims on..

Good deal.

It looks to be a (lot nicer) twin to mine, except mine had leather, where yours is cloth.

The power sunroof is actually called a moonroof...some dislike 'em, some folks can't live without one....myself, kinda wish mine was devoid of a roof hole...the headliner hangs a bit lower accordingly, and I have very little head room. I swapped out my power seat tracks for manual, so I can't lower my seats any at all either lol.

Your boy is a lucky guy.

(want to adopt a 33 year old? I can even cook) :rollin:

LOL...Sorry man, don't need any more kids on my insurance!! Son goes on this year, then my daughter gets her license next year. So this time next year,  will have 2 teenagers on my insurance. :shakehead

Figured why not get kid something cool.. I grew up in low income and didnt get a car until I was 21. Joined Army,at 18, went to germany for a few years, and got stationed stateside, but wasnt here long when they shipped me to the big sand box across the pond.  Always told myself will try to give my kids more than I had growing up, little stuff like that they will remember when they are older...
