I have a pair of sunvisors I took out of an Explorer that are in great shape, but they're slightly off color compared to my new headliner. Could an upholstery shop die them for me? It would be a shame to have to recover these things since the fabric is in such good shape on them.
They can recover them. The going rate around here to have a pair recovered is about $40.00
That's a great price Vinnie, but these are the double visor-style, with lighted mirrors. It would cost me a fortune to have them recovered because of there being 4 to recover and them having to work around the mirrors in them.
If it's possible to have them died instead, I think that would be much cheaper.
Check around for best pricing or maybe you can try doing this yourself. I know I used to be scared to try doing lot of things myself but now I enjoy the satisfaction of conquest and acheivement when I can do something and save myself some bucks!
I got a pair of large visors with lighted mirrors with the flip down covers. These things come apart easily and I have already stripped the material from the visors getting them ready to recover them myself. Once you work with removing the old material you can see how it goes on so I feel confident for myself that I will be able to cover the ones I have. Mine are hard plastic unlike older cars that are that degenertive cardboard.
Funny thing last night I decided to install the roof console with it's mounting bracket without the headliner in place. I so rudely discovered that the inner parts of the sunvisors at the narrow points where they rest above the mirrors will not fit around the front section of the roof console. So I am going to cut off those small sections that interfere and it will look just fine when I am done. Yeah it might be easier to scower a salvage yard for smaller visors but I do not want the ones I have to go to waste.
If all you want is to die them why not check into some of that fabric stuff they sell at parts stores not sure about on that thin fabric but I sure got what I want out of it when I retouched my carpet for the bird.
Mine are the double style as well from an Explorer.I was lucky, and my gray ones matched the headliner very well.
If the fabric die/paint they have at Auto Zone matches, I'll give that a try.
You sure got lucky to find a pair that matched your headliner so well. Once I get my visors to match the headliner, all I'll need to do to finish off the interior, will be to replace the carpet and install a dash cap. It'll be good to go then..
