Title: Can't believe it !!
Post by: flipnbird on June 24, 2010, 07:41:39 AM
Here is the story............... About 8-9 months ago i put some TFS 170 heads and a comp xe270 cam in my car (already had all the other stuff in sig) and after all was done we fired her up and she ran, ran good as hell........for the first couple days. Then she would not idle right spit and sputtered unless i was up in the RPM's, I done codes and all that good stuff and couldn't figure it out.
Then it started getting winter and she sat for awhile, done a little research on the forums and tried this tried that and nothing seemed to help. Then i took a 30% pay cut at work which meant that my Toy fundage was gone!!! Was told by few that it could be my meter.....Not it.....was told by some and read that i could have a lower intake leak......could be....After 5-6 months of my pay cut i finally got the 30% back and i purchased a ported lower (TMoss) cause i figured if i was going to take the lower off any way why not put a ported one back on :D
She fired right up(kinda) but she ran good for about 30 minutes then i cut her off and tried he starting again and she started acting up again so i walked away. Started playing with her again a few days later and still nothing, tried again a couple days later and now she wouldn't even fire. I thought hhmmmm!! this happened to me once before when i had an accel 300 ignition box, so i unhooked my msd box and hooked it back up stock, hit the key and..........................................she has been running great for the last week (knock on wood). So all this time it has been my msd box. That is my story and I'm sticking to it !! :burnout:

Through the years I've learned what MSD really stands for and it ain't Multiple Spark Discharge, it's more like Money Spending Disaster.  I've seen a lot of MSD component failures.  Not just ignition boxes but BTM's too.  A guy I worked with had a silly fast nissan 240 with a 2.4 stroker and a turbo...kept loosing head gaskets...fully blue-printed engine with Cometic head gasket and ARP head studs....turns out the BTM died and the HG could only take so much boost and timing before it would let loose.

I've had EXCELLENT results with Mallory ignition components.

Always thought MSD was like top of the line, no problems what so ever....but i have come to find out different with my car). I have all Msd on my truck(67 f100 w/ 472)and have not had a problem with it in the last 16 years, I just don't get it???????????? coarse i bought everything new for the truck and i found this box for my car on ...EVILBAY... The car is just running fine since i swaped back to the stock box, i will eventually get me another box MSD, Mallorry, i don't know yet, I got to much else on my list right now.

Yeah man MSD boxes and boost retards are the most unreliable car parts I think i ever dealt with. I'm going to give the summit retard box (made by mallory) a try next.
