Title: Tonight I found the...
Post by: 50tbrd88 on May 21, 2010, 11:30:24 PM
...top speed limiter on the Mark VII speed density computer I am running.  I passed some kids in a Dodge Dakota at about 45-50 mph and they decided to try and run me.  So as a result I punched it (we were on a long flat stretch with no cars around) and was a little surprised to hit the limiter pretty quickly.  By that point the Dakota boys were a distant speck in my mirror (5.0 HO FTW).  What are the Mark VII's limited to?  I can't tell since my digital dash maxes out at 85 mph:mullet:!

I also noticed that my little vibration problem starts around 70 but seems to smooth out somewhat around what I would guess to be 100 mph or so.

That computer tops out at 110 mph. I know because you have my old SD computer in your car;)

With the A9P I'm running now I've gotten past 110 easy.

I was hoping you would chime in.  For some reason I figured you had tested the limiter out as well.  ;)

I am thinking there will be a MAF conversion in my future.

Interesting.  My birds have/had the same problem, 95-110.  Maybe gone with the new suspension.  Always suspected some funky harmonics - guess it has something to do with the 7.5 axle?

I thought it was wierd too.  Ever since the car has had the vibration, I always get out of it when it starts vibrating.  This time I just kept my foot on the floor and was a little surprised when it smoothed out somewhat.

Thats how my cougar is.

Out of curiosity do you have a sound clip of your bird with the Violator lers on it?

i have been at the heart of this debate on here ever since i joined this site. my car, with the stock computer, would run over  110, WELL over 110......

BUT i'm out of this, someone threatened to ban me the last time this was brought up.

He's running a Lincoln ECU.  The Mustang ECU for Speed Density had no vehicle speed limiter save for the laws of physics.  I remember your 2 threads.  You were claiming a stock cammed SO car (replete with a factory rated 155 HP motor and an 88 IIRC which the 88 T_bird DID have a speed limiter in stock trim) was capable of running in excess of 140 MPH.....while exceeding the ECU's REV LIMITER -- which they ALL have BTW.

2 totally different scenarios....

No way in hell a stock 5.0 SO T-bird/Cougar would run 140+.  The max I ever had mine up to was close to 120, but that was all she had in her.

88foxbird, here is another Violator ler clip:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwfpiQozOlI

Didn't the '88 TCs have a top speed somewhere around 130+mph?  I never understood how they would run that fast with only 190 HP 2.3Turbo compared to the 5.0HOs 225HP and more torque.  I would think a 5.0HO 225HP in a tbird would run close to 140ish, but i'm not going to try to find out with mine:)

Mainly depends on the gearing. :burnout: I did 142 in my '94 Integra with much less HP than my bird.

Back in the day, bone stock, mine did 127-129 depending on how you read the tachometer.  That's at approx 600' above sea level.  My friend in a bone stock GT ran almost exactly the same top speed (he was pacing me), so the aerodynamic difference between a bird and pony is approx 50 hp at that speed.

I've been told or read somewhere the 87-88's could do 140, but I've heard a lot of things.

it's been said that the speed limiter could be bypassed by clipping a wire, who's to say mine wasnt cut or otherwise messed up?

why is it so hard to believe that my car ran over 110? 4000 rpms in drive would be around 115 with 26" tires and 2.73's. it would also hold OD at WOT, everyone says thats not possible with an AOD, but mine sure as hell did.

i'm gathering parts for a t5 swap as we speak, all i need is a bellhousing, clutch fork, and TOB. i got the rest, including the trans for $50. also trying to work out a deal for a 3.73 geared mustang 8.8

You just don't get it and I'm done wasting my time trying to explain it to you.

No one is saying your car won't do over 110...we are saying that there is no way a stock 5.0 SO T-bird would do 140+.  The laws of physics are against you on that one.  :punchballs:

I've gotten mine up to about 125 and it was still pulling hard. I let off because 125 is pretty fast and I realized how stupid I was to be driving that fast in the first place:hick:

I am thinking there will be a MAF conversion in my future.

On a stockish HO 5.0, you'll just slow it down with a MAF conversion(been there done that, lost .25 in quarter)... Either swap to a Stang SD 'puter, OR remove the dark green/white wire on pin #3 in the EEC connector...

So removing that wire does away with the limiter?

Yup...

It's only in the '88s, '86 & '87(may be in late versions) doesn't have a speed sensor input to the EEC...

The 86 & 87 EVTMs don't show pin 3 for the 5.0 but the 87 EVTM shows the speed sensor on pin 3 for the 2.3 Turbo.

I've seen 128 with the aod and 345 gears, had to let up and coasted 2 miles, to get it towed home. Fried the poor thing, had one built, then the crazy idea of making it stick. That's where I'm now, 5 spd and a aod on the shelf.

it's not hard to believe...I had an '88 3.8 once hit 127 by the speedo.

Doesn't mean I was going that fast though.

An SO is outta steam by 4K, and an HO not much after that.

Hard to convince fellers that have been hot rodding Ford motors longer than you've been alive who simply know better in the first place. :punchballs::evilgrin:

All I'll say is prove it, or STFU. :D

Out here we have some 80 mph zones. I have tached out an 86 cougar. By tached out, I mean I got it to just over 4000rpms. I doubt you could get it higher then that WOT in neutral. Speedo was around 135mph. One of the stupidest things I've ever done, and probably took me well over 2 miles WOT to get there. These cars get light and very tail happy about 110 or so if I had to guess. In the last 5 years, I doubt I have hit much over 85, even in the 80 mph zones.

One night very late, I was driving on a back road I know very well. I had a civic of some sort toying with me and I didn't want to play. He kept passing me and then laying on the brakes trying to get me to pass him. After slowing down to about 15 mph in a 65 zone a couple of times, I blew past him. Got up to about 65 or so and let off. He kept catching up and doing the same thing. With over 15 miles of straight road and no real turn offs, I got sick of him. Next time he tried to pass me I just held him into his lane up to his speed limiter, then I floored it till I couldn't see his lights anymore.

I about scared my self to death after realizing how fast I actually was going, and I have driven that road alot. probably 10 or 15 times a week in all weather conditions. It was very un-common to see any car on that road at all. I used to travel it at about 100mph everyday. One day, I was trying to get home quick and was speeding pretty bad. I got home alittle bit after midnight, and sat down to watch cops while I ate my dinner. I got a knock at the door and there was a sheriff standing on my porch.

Cop said he didn't clock me, but he was doing 110 trying to catch up and lost me but recognized my car. I used to get in alot of trouble. Gave me a long talk about how I was going to get someone killed. Turns out the guy had a cougar at one point in time and wanted to see the car. I was let off with a warning, guess he was off duty or something. Said if he ever saw me again he wouldn't let me get away.

Screwing around I spun out in the snow at about 45 and went off the road fishtailing. Ended up in an empty field and was able to drive the car out. I'll tell you right now it ain't worth it. Some of us are very much so worse off the others, depending on the level of stupid we won't let go of. I'm just glad I gave mine up before I killed myself, or hurt someone else. Sooner or later it will happen. Now I drive like a grandma.
