Title: 5.0 no start this morning... Please Help
Post by: mustangbd24 on May 17, 2010, 07:17:36 AM
Well, i started driving my 88 XR7 after i got the heater core done and recharged the AC and everything was fine.  Ive been driving it for about 2 weeks.  This morning i went out to start it up and it just cranks and cranks.  I noticed i didnt hear the fuel pump prime.  I popped the hood to check the coil.  Well when i went to remove the cover that covers the coil and starter solenoid i got a puff of smoke and then that was it.  It definetly smelt electrical. It still cranks and everything so im not sure what that was all about.  I am at work right now and just trying to put a feeler out to see if anyone has any idea what could be causing the no start.  I would like to get the parts so i can fix it tonight when i get home.  thanks in advance for your help.

When mine did that it was the fuel pump.  There are several steps to verify it isnt something else.

There is a spot to jumper and make the fuel pump run, (if its able to) it is on the computer test plug under the hood. I dont have a link to show it, it on the board here somewhere.

The fuel pump test pin is the pin on the bottom right if you hold the test connector with the 2 pins on top and the 4 on bottom.  Ground that pin and the fuel pump should run continuously if it still works.

ok great, thank you very much.  I have been doing alot of reading and it seems the small ground wire by the battery cable could be causing an issue.  Like i said i had a small puff of smoke come out of the area where the coil is so i hope its just a bad connection.  I have a full tank of gas and pray that the fuel pump is good.

I disconnected all the connectors by the coil and sprayed them with electrrcal cleaner and reinstalled.  i also cleaned the small ground wire.  It still started and seems to run fine, just like beforee.  This was really weird!

I was gonna say a fusable link. If I recall, those are under that cover, and will smoke when they blow. However, they don't grow back together, hehe... So that's not it...

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter or a fuel pump going tits up.  Electrical gremlins usually dont go away.  Do a fuel pressure test when its running with a gauge off of the schrader valve.

Sometimes the outer sheathing WILL stay and look OK upon first glance though....
