Title: Dear Lord, I want this car.
Post by: Thunder Chicken on May 14, 2010, 09:06:29 PM
Oh, yes. Yes I do.

Can we say "potential"?

http://halifax.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1976-TORINO-ELITE-NEW-PRICE-W0QQAdIdZ205069923

Body looks good, and how hard could it be to rewire a 1976 anything?

In case the ad disappears (it'll probably sell fast) here's the text:

I once had a '76 Torino.  Still have the 351W and C4.  Contemplating putting it in my Tbird to get it over with, lol.

Mine was not in that good of shape, though.  I'd sure hit it.

88Turbo, are those the same wheels that came on the same year Tbirds? I see them come up on Craigslist locally from time to time. I can certainly pick a setup for you sometime and drop them off on my way through later.

Powerstroke 7.3L Turbo Diesel swap.

I was wondering the same thing. I've had a few 78/79 T-Birds and it looks like the same wheel. The Town Landau came with gold, while the Heritage and Diamond Jubliee, for example, could be color keyed.

That things looks tough!

As for the wheels, There was a late 70's T-Bird in the junkyard last summer that had those rims.

It would cost more than $2k just to transport a restorable car to Nova Scotia from the south and get it through customs (and that's not including the cost of the car). If the rust in the pics is only surface rust from the paint being burned off (which appears to be the case) that car is a bargain.

Paul, I like that Powerstroke idea. I was thinking Explorer/GT40 5.0/4R70W swap, but that diesel idea definitely has merit...

Am I the only one who thinks the mid 70s Torinos were awful??? Always figured after the '72 model year, styling dropped like a rock...

The '77-'79 Bird & Coug were the first decent looking vehicles Ford produced in five years... My dad had a '79 Coug with a 351 Windsor, but it was a dog the 351W '71 Galaxie he had would clobber it, not to mention the 5.0 SEFI '86 Grand Marquis that he bought later...

On a positive note, a friend of my son-in-law has a mid '70s Torino with a built 460, if you can keep gas in it, it's bad ass...

My first answer was no but I tried to do a search to prove it and I think I'm wrong.  Most I found was in the 4k range or more and in worst shape.  For me I do not see the appeal for these but I guess others do.

This is the best one I found in my area, but it is a 73.

The guy doesn't know what he has, its a '72 or at least a '72 front clip... The '73 had the big snow plow front bumper...

BTW that's a base Torino, the Gran Torino & Torino Sport had a different header and grille...

That guy is wrong as well, that's a Grand Torino Elite(could have "Limited" stuck on it someplace, but basically it's same car Carmen is drooling over), the BIG LTD was the full size ford...

Well you can't trust anybody.  The "73" is a odd looking one and I can't find another 72 on the internet to match it?  Maybe all the pictures are of the Gran and there are none of the standard?  But I kind of like how simple it is.

About 20 years ago I test drove a 1975 Starchy and Hutch Torino with a 460 and I thought it was too big and a dog.  When I saw it for sale I thought it was cool because it was the same color and everything but it was not a car I wanted to drive.  I think it was $1,200.

Ted, I'm having trouble visualizing a base '73 Torino as having a different grille than the upper models, they may have all had a grille like the one in the link I posted(The more I think, the more I believe they were different)... My next door neighbor bought a new '72, same as the one in the link and a buddy had '72 & '73 Sports so I'm reasonably familiar with those years...

'74 - '76 were all similar in styling... That period was when I lost all desire to own a new car, as almost every model was was a barge and the then new smog laws killed any resemblance of performance... The one notable exception was the '73 & '74 Firebirds with the 455SD, those are highly sought after collectibles today...

There are few cars from the 70's that appeal to me. Torino's happen to be among them. My father owned several back when I was a kid and they stuck in my memories.

Some of the others include Firebirds, Corvettes (C3 is my favourite Corvette, love the pen 15e-bottle shape), Vega's, and Mavericks. I know every one of these cars were dogs (except maybe the SD455 Trans Ams that Tom mentioned) but a fix is only an engine swap away. A 300+ horse 351 will bolt into the same hole a 130-horse 351 occupied (or, in the case of a Corvette a 350+ horse 350 will bolt in place of the 150 horse 350 the cars originally came with)....

In a '76 C&D they had a shoot out of the fastest cars then available, the Lil Red Express Truck was one of the entries, unfortunately I can't remember all the test vehicles(yeah I'm going to see if I can find the article)...

What an idiot that Elite seller is for stating that it is an LTD.

The Elite was the Grand Torino Elite in 1974 only. 1974 was a mid year release. For 1975-76 it became a stand alone nameplate and as young as I was I do remember the sensation surrounding it. It's no coincidence that it looked like a scaled down version of the bigger Thunderbird. When it was decided that the big Tbird was going to be dropped and the name continued on the redesigned Torino/Elite/Montego/Cougar platform it was no longer necessary for the Elite nameplate to continue. What a great move it was to put the Thunderbird name on this platform since 1977-79 set sales records for the Thunderbird nameplate. Ford should have been wiser to have gone with a plan much sooner to base the Thunderbird on the smaller Torino platform. Prototypes based on the Torino platform were considered in the early 1980's.

Anyway, I always loved this Torino platform and all it's variants. I had a 1978 LTD II back in 1974 and I loved it. However these cars are so huge to me now. When I see them in salvage yards I am like bewildered that they were so big, and I don't remember thinking my LTD II was so big when I had it. So, I am quite comfortable with the size of my 1984 Tbird. The 1972-76 Tbirds are so enourmous! It's hard to believe that people wanted cars that big. They were all hood and girth not so much room inside.

Yes, the bent window Impala would be on the list as well, and I could probably find room for an El Camino or Monte Carlo, too. And don't let's forget the 77-79 T-Bird Tom is talking about, belt buckles on the trunk and all...

I don't remember any of the '77-'79 Cougars like pop had having the trunk straps...

His '79 Coug was a Mercury 40th anniversary model, but other than having a Lincoln paint color, I don't know of anything special about it... Only saw one other one like it, so I suppose they were fairly rare... He bought it from my uncles dealership in WV and if I remember correctly, pop said Gary(uncle) said it just showed up on a delivery and was never actually ordered for the dealership... If I remember, I'll ask next time I'm up in WV...

The "Sport decor" option added the luggage trunk straps and different wheels on the late 70s T-Bird.
