Title: Chip Foose John Deere 4020
Post by: 50tbrd88 on May 09, 2010, 10:05:10 PM
I have some pictures of some of the latest work from Chip Foose.  John Deere commissioned Foose to take a 4020 (one of the most successful and well known tractors in history) and "Fooseify" it.  Deere is using it to promote their "Drive Green Event" which is a traveling caravan of utility tractors that goes from dealership to dealership.

My dealership was lucky enough to get one of the few spots.  Therefore, we decided to travel to Sunbury, OH and see one of the shows to get some ideas on how to set our show up.  Our show will not be until July 11th...but since we are in the middle of nowhere, we thought we should go the extra mile to make our event extra special and get ideas by attending other shows.  This event was at AD Farrow Harley Davidson which was a cool location (but about 4 1/2 hrs from my house).

Here are more pictures of the 4020 (http://"http://s495.photobucket.com/albums/rr313/50tbrd88/OH%20drive%20green/").

And here is what he started with:

What do you guys think?  Most people I have talked to really don't like it.  They think that the 4020 is such an iconic image, that Foose has ruined the tractor.  I think its cool.  They made a bazillion of those tractors and now this is probably the most unique one out there.  The tires are probably the worst mistake...

I like all his work. He takes the everyday boring look out of all his projects.

As a farmer first, and hot-rodder secondly....I think it's a pile of mashed assholes in practicality, (especially those turf tires....WTF!?) but thinking outside of the box, it's pretty neat. Why is the rollover bar not J-D green though? lol

How fast will it go, or are the mods cosmetic only?

Just a fancy lawn mower.

I do agree about the ROP, it looks like it was added later and he forgot to paint it.  Kind of like the cheap spoilers on the ricer cars.

Not a Foose fan, period.

Most of the modifications are cosmetic only.  Supposedly you can take everything off and get it ready for field work in one day.  He made everything detachable so that if you wanted, you could reinstall the 3pt hitch and drawbar and go to work.

I'm not a huge Foose fan.  Some of the stuff he does is pretty cool I guess.  Most of his car builds feature 3 tone paint jobs and 22" wheels which are not really my thing.  Overall I do think the 4020 was pretty cool.  Kind of a waste...but no different than all these guys who build pulling tractors.  This is as usable as what one of those would be.

Yeah, I was just commenting on Foose's style in general.  Just not my thing.  (Not that anyone would be surprised by that though :p )

I like his work and have a lot of respect for the guy.  When most of the guys you see on these shows are hot-heads and yelling he is always laid back and happy to be there.

I wished that I had 10% of his talent and knowledge.

Ok, I gotta add my 2-cents here. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Chip and his talents. Not only does he do some cool work, but I've met him personally thru friends of mine who've known him for 30 years now and he truely is one hell of a nice guy. He is actually a very down to earth guy who will hang out with you and just BS about your car no matter what it is. A buddy of mine had some shots of this tractor about a month before it was finished and showed them to me....I just kinda laughed at the fact it was a JD but at the same time thought it was cool he would try to customize something that odd!! LOL On a side note, with the work I've done with ISCA and movie cars and the people I've been lucky enough to meet, I can say theres alot.....ALOT of low-lifes out there who ride only on their names anymore.....Chip isn't one of them.

Ok, enough of the soap box.

Later, RAY
