I was supposed to meet up with the car ckub, travel to Texas Motor Speedway, have some fun, drive the Sport a few laps around the track with the pace car in the lead.....Come to find out, there's a member or two from here down there. !!! The event is supposed to take place again in the fall...We'll be there with the Sport.
Well,I got up early as I usually do.All was fine in the world.I went and washed the Sport, clay bar, good waxing, polished the wheels, etc. After that,My youngest and I went to do some Mother's day shopping.Again, all good.On the way home, about 1/2 mile from home, the car started to fall flat.It idled fine, but on acceleration,it had no power, slight popping,so,I pulled over, turned off the car,and it was fine....for a minute, then back to the same problem. I traced the problem to the fuel pump.Well, this was at 3:20,and we were supposed to meet the group at 3:45...16 miles away.No dice.I end up staying home, with a new pump in the trunk waiting to go in probably Monday morning...maybe tomorrow, but,it's Mother's Day,so,I plan on staying in with the Mrs....cooking and whatever she wants me to clean, fix, whatever. It's her day.I also have to work..
Anyway, the Sport looks great sitting still, going nowhere,in the driveway, with 22 gallons of fuel and a bad pump. For once I'd like the pump to die when I have 5 gallons of gas.....if it has to die.
While I was griping and cranky and couldn't drive the Sport,,I was looking at what I had under warranty, and ended up swapping brakes, ignition switch, ignition module,MAP sensor (O.K.,BAP sensor since the Mass Air upgrade),and then I griped some more.man, what a py day.I don't blame the Sport, the pump has been well used.Oh well,I'll swap the pump as soon as I can. News to follow.
That's too bad. In a "glass is half full" kind of way, at least it didn't die a mile from the track on the way over.
And at least you have a nice clean car and a wax job. Also is good that you can afford 22 gallon of gas and the new part to put in.
Things happen like this, have an excellent mothers day.

that sucks just as bad as my turbo biting the dust and i have no way to get another one right now.
Well, the waxed partis a good thing.....but,it rained all night. LOL.I wouldn't have had the funds, but, the cash for the pump was what I had set aside to go to Texas,so,it all worked out.The worse part about it for me is the full tank and swapping the pump.I've done it before, and don't like it.I'll set the back end of the Sport on jack stands, then put a medium sized piece of wood on top of the 2 tone floor jack and lower the tank as little as possible, pop in the new pump, and lift it back up.I may have to siphon a little out.Probably will.
I would try to get the most out of it that you can. Even on the jack it could slip and go sideways and make a very big mess.
I hate doing this job and I have a hoist and transmission jack. Seems like I always end up smelling like gas, my shop too.

Check your feed line coming from the pump.....It might be cracked/split....
Got a siphon so maybe you could put the gas in another car(s)?
I will try to make it easy, and dry,as possible.LOL.This would be a good time to have a panel in the trunk floor.I've seen people do this before.Anyone got any pics of that?
I'm liking the idea a lot right now, but, when it comes down to it,I honestly don't know if I could actually cut the car like that.
I'll grab a siphon after work. The lines should be fine,no leaking,or other fuel issues, just a fuel pump that is screaming.
I have an inline pump that I use to suck the fuel out, takes some time but it works quite well. Inline pump with hose stuck down the fill tube.
Here ya go , I personally would not do this but it is a great article

awesome!! I like that.:D
Sucky Vin....least you weren't too far from home though.
What pump are you putting back in?
I need to get my door panels on, and then slap in my 255 pound Walbro.....
I mean the part of the line in the tank itself. Double-check while you're in there.
Thanks for the link guys.Actually,I'm beginning to be more and more good with the panel. If this would've happened out of town, with minimal tools and in bad way.The panel would help a LOT.
As far as the hose demon,I got a new one with the pump. It'll be swapped whether it needs it or not.Now is the time.I'll swap it first thing in the morning.I'm doing laundry right now and thinking about what to cook for supper.....It's Mother's Day you know.
I wonder how those Mark VII measurements are as opposed to the Sport's.
Love the blood on his hand in the pics
I was going to say the same thing!
Any ideas for the measurements?
I have no clue if they are the same Vinnie , sorry :(
I may just try that trick in the morning. If the "flat" are under the carpt, the raised area,is where the pump is,I can probably figure it out.I'll do my best to grab a few pics and see how it turns out....IF I decide to go that route. It would make life a lot easier when and if this happens again,or if I decide to upgrade again down the road.
I don't need the measurements.I did it....I cut the hole in the trunk, and I'll fab a removable plate tomorrow morning.WOW !!!.Fuel pump swaps will be a piece of cake.It took me about 5 minutes to cut the hole, and then the actual pump swap.Easy stuff.I very carefully drilled a 1/2 inch hole first in the area I thought the pump would be,shined the flashlight in the hole and got an idea of what the actual location was,got out the Dremmel with a cutoff wheel for steel, and in no time,a nice hole was cut. After doing it,I have no regrets, especially considering how easy it made the job.The whole task, including the pump swap was less time than dropping the tank after siphoning the fuel (full tank). As I stated,I'll fab the cover tomorrow.Probably from a thick baking sheet we have and never use.I never liked that pan,but never got rid of it.I suppose it really did have a higher purpose in life.LOL..
Awesome !!! I just can't bring myself to cut a hole in perfectly good sheet metal :D
I would do it in a minute to save the aggrevation of dropping the tank... Why designers so thoughtless to not design an access hole on so many cars ever made is beyond me.
So where is the sending unit in relation to all of this. I eventually need to swap for a sending unit that will make my fuel gauge read correctly.
I'll take the measurements for the fuel pump in relation to the trunk itself, then, you'll have to find out how far the sender is from the pump and go from there. No hole for the sender will be cut........hopefully ever. After I drop the youngest off at school,I'll fab up a plate to cover it,and put the trunk back together.
It seems like the link given on page two for the Mark VII matches up really good to our cars, although I made the hole a little bigger so i had a little more room to work. The hole I cut was 5 inches front to back by 7 inches side to side.Just right.I got a 12x12 sheet of steel from Lowe's and made a patch panel for it,layed down a bead of sealant, and installed some self tapping sheet metal screws (button head). It was very easy and worth it.After the carpet was placed back down,no-one will ever know.
I wish someone had already cut mine , That way I would have easy access, and no guilt about cutting my car :hick:
I may change my tune someday though .
I feel the same way,I did NOT want to cut the car, but,it's in a spot that can't be seen,it can save a lot of aggravation, especially if the pump goes out miles and miles from home.It only took about 5 minutes to cut the hole, and now,I can relax.
Wanna cut mine???:D
Where are the pics!
I'd feel confident cutting anyone's trunk like I did my own.Easy stuff,no damage to lines or anything else.
As far as pics,no camera.Gayle took it to work for the "girl's lunch" today.Look at the link on page two for the Mark VII,and imagine a rectangle hole, not round.....same thing.LOL.
