Title: What Kind of Rubber you got on?
Post by: V8Demon on April 28, 2005, 08:34:17 AM
Just got some new rubber on the 10 holes recently. I picked up some Pirelli P600's in 235/60WR15. I must say they are a lot better than the Yokohama's I had (Can't wait to see if there is any 60' improvement!). They are listed here:http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?width=235%2F&ratio=60&diameter=15&startIndex=0&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&manufacturer=Pirelli&speed_rating=WR&RunFlat=All&x=81&y=7 Overall I'm pretty happy with them. Best tire I've had so far....even good in the rain (The Yoko's were a NIGHTMARE on wet pavement)

I was just curious as to what others have used and what their results were (good or bad)

Falken Ziex 512 245/45/17.  So far I am very impressed with them.  I probably haven't put 1,000 miles on them since I got them last fall but so far traction is very good.  No wet driving yet either but they appear to have a good tread pattern for rainy driving.  I have a lot of trouble getting them to spin with my tired old 5.0.
Also ride quality is pretty good considering my rim size and the type of springs I am using.

BFG Comp T/A 245/45HR17's. Seem to be pretty compliant for highway driving. I haven't given them a full workout in the rain. In the few instances *coughcoughCarlislecoughcough* where I'm stuck driving on wet roads, they seem to be alright. Originally I wanted a much stickier Z-rated tire but I could not pass up the deal on these H-rated ones. Although the compound is harder, it's much better for my situation where I only drive the car maybe 3K miles a year, store it in the winter, and don't normally take it to the track or autocrossing. I've had 14", 15", 16" and 17" rims on this car, and so far the smoothest ride has been with the 16" BFG Comp T/A's. The 17's ride a little harsher but then again, this car isn't exactly the smoothest riding Cat around. Still handles and corners great though.

Does this count?

(as for the car, it's just a mix of py tires.. think the rear ones on the '86 are beginning to crack significantly on the sidewalls)

Cooper 235/60HR15's on 10-holes. The front ones are worn already, after less than 10,000 miles (looks like I need an alignment)

Cooper Cobra GTs 215/70R14  Didn't wear quite as well as I hoped, good in the dry, pretty decent in the wet, but horrible in the snow.  The original Cooper Lifeline whitewalls that were mostly bald when I got the car did better in the snow than the Cobras when they were brand new.

Bald Hancook snow tires on the rear (still have 2 or 3 studs left in them) and dried up hancooks on the front, doesnt like to corner too quick, prefers to slide straight foreward. The tires were put on oct/94 I think its time for a new set of walmarts finest  :D

BFG Comp T/A 225/60-15 (Discontinued... "Traction T/A" is the new version)
5 years, 92,000km (57,000mi)
Still grip nice in the dry, kinda slippery in the wet.
I don't think they're round any more.

Falken Ziex 512 245/45/17.

I liked my ziex's but in large puddles they tend to hydroplane or really pull on the steering wheel and tend to scare the shyt out of you if not paying attention.

Now my Falken Grb FK-451's (pictured) I am absolutely in love with these tires! IMO they are the best looking tire on the market, great ride, great traction, and barrel through any size puddles like they arent even there by throwing the water out to the sides keeping it a really quiet ride even in the rain.

Unfortunately, those were on my 17's and my dumbass went with Toyo Proxes when I got the 18's and for what I paid for these f*ing tires I hate them!!! Dont get me wrong, they ride like the Falkens and have good traction and in the rain go through the puddles really well with almost no feel on the steering wheel. BUT, they throw the water straight up against the inside of the wheel wells making it really loud inside the car, trust me. when your going through a puddle in these MF's you hear them, every one, even over the radio. And for $230 a  tire I highly reccommend staying away from the Toyo Proxes...

Some tire store knock offs made by Kelly Tire.  Sporty look, good ride, great traction. (and I can't seem to wear them out half as fast as my BFG's)
front- 225/55 16
rear - 245/50 16

For the street I use the Pep Boys "Futura Ultra-Z" (225-60-15) tires - not bad for a budget tire:

At the track I use these MT ET street radials (275-60-15):

...they stick enough to twist my chassis at the track  :D

Wow, this threads goin good!    Lowcat,  The Yokohamas I used to have were the AVS Intermediate (Discontinued) in 235/60-15.  I could roast em all day long when they were new and they handled great on dry pavement.  The treadlife was , 15 K even with rotations every 3K and they were downright dangerous in the rain when new.  I guess that's why they're discontinued :giggle:
Glad to see your particular ones are doing well for you.  As for me I'm diggin the Pirellis on both my toys....

225/60/15 BFG  G-Force TAs...they are the stickest summer tire Tire rack has for a stock wheel'd XR7. :(

Compared to my old Firestone SZ50s they absolutely suck. Noisy, much less grip in the wet, overall they are .  My nearly bald SZ50s were quieter and stuck just as well, maybe better.

Really wish Firestone would reconsider and give us the SZ-50 for 15" wheels. :(

Honestly I am thinkin about complaining to Tirerack about these tires...only been a few thousand miles and they are getting worse in the noise department.

Never had good luck with BFGs, donno why...

Realy I have always had good luck with BFG's. I have quite a few miles on my G Force T/A's never had a problem with them. The set that is on my cougar were on my Mark VII. I have around 30,000 on them from the lincoln and another 10,000 from the cougar. They are just now in need of replacement.

Now the Goodyear's that come on the 01-04 Mustangs are garbage. One of the guys I work with has them and they only have about 10,000 on them and the fronts, yes I said the front tires are almost bald. Anyone know anything about those tires.

LOL, those are goodyear gatorbacks, those tires were the shiznit back in the 80s.  My Cougar had them new, along with Testarossas, Vettes, Mustangs, Turbo Coupes, IROCs, GTAs, etc...he musta had them overinflated or something, mine were good for 20,000.  Great tires in the 1980s, pretty useless these days.  Can you say out of date? :)

EDIT: well the G-forces do have nice grip, maybe the ones I got are duds somehow.  I'll talk to tirerack after the semester ends and see what's up.

Goodyear Eagle F1's are awesome though. My buddy had them OE on his '00 Lightning. Average life is about 20K miles. When it came time to replace them he was torn because he never believed in Goodyear tires that much. Well, he ended up with 4 brand new F1's.

Jeeves, BFG's have had some spotty problems from what I heard. Maybe you just got a bad set or something.

You're probably right about the BFGs, Eric.  Though we had a set of Comp TAs on our previous 1985 Tbird, they were like these ones, two of them eventually blew a la Firestones on a Ford Explorer. So this is not a cool coincidence for me.

I have yet to see a Goodyear tire that was worth its asking price.  The puppiesanese and Koreans make better stuff for less (esp the Koreans) and the Italians and French outdo them on the higher end stuff.

I had a set of BFG radial t/a's on my original 14'' wheels and I was not very impressed.  They were loud and didn't wear all that well...I'm not really sure why they are so popular other than that they were the popular tire and probably one of the first radials back in the day.

I've got Bridgestone Turanza Z-Revo 225/60ZR15's all around. They ran about $130 a tire, but had the highest wet-weather traction rating I could find that fit my turbines. I used to run Eagle Aquatreds in the same size, but Goodyear stopped making ones that fit my rims.

I also have a set of four Pirelli Winter 210 Asymmetrico tires for the winter, but since I picked up a used Explorer a few years ago I haven't had any need to put them on. They were about the same price, and I picked them because they were the only H-rated winter tires available. It doesn't snow all that much around here so most of the time in the winter the roads are either dry or icy.

When I originally bought my turbines (a guy with a Mustang was selling them) they came with his stock Goodyear Gatorbacks and a pair of Goodyear M+S snow tires. The Gatorbacks were utter  in the rain and it was impossible to not hydroplane on them (hence my choice of Eagle Aquatreds). The Aquatreds just about keep you nailed to the ground in the rain, but they wear out real fast (and the widest they ever made were 225mm).

I had BFG Radial T/A's as pictured in my sig. These tire sucked. I spun all the time on wet roads and forget about driving in the snow. Recently put on a set of BFG Traction T/A's and they have been great so far. Excellent in the rain and good in the snow plus more responsive on dry than the Radial T/A's. I'm using the stock 225/60R/15 size all the way around.

I was happy with Goodyear Eagle GT+4's in 225/60-HR15 until they quit making them in that size.  Replaced them with Eagle HP's, & they were about the same except they squalled to high heaven when stressed (the GT's made little noise at all except the drone from the scalloping).  I have new BFG Radial TA's on the front now, & they seem OK, but they don't seem to have the quick steering response & recovery that the Goodyears had.
