Title: My new invention for the body moldings
Post by: 347Thunder on April 22, 2010, 09:36:17 PM
I was tired of looking at the side of the bumper so I made these. I was planning on making them it was a little lower on the to do list. So this is the first one only 3 more to make. They will be painted red when I finish the others. What do you guys think?

Always wanted to make something similar. A bit longer though. I like the idea. End of bumper trim is one of the ugliest things on these cars.

I had the same thought, but to cut another matching moulding on a 45 deg. angle and glue it on.

I've been going back and forth on keeping or deleting the side trim on my 86 and thought that if I deleted it I wanted to do the same from the removed trim just to transition that area properly.

The aluminum is a good idea too.

Actually I like the aluminum look...it's kinda "fancy". ;)

For years (actually, decades now......) my mind has been struggling with a way to cap off the molding, especially when it's left off between the bumpers. In the end my eye wants to see all the factory molding on. Don't know why, it just looks cleaner to me. I like the removed molding look, it's just that with the molding built into the bumper covers, there's not a super practical way to remove it and make it look 100% clean. This aluminum bit is the nicest solution I've seen though...very cool.

I have a set of those for my box bird, they were made by ford though, they go behind the front bumper instead of the chunky urethane pieces that usually go there.

I agree with Eric that it just looks better with the trim in tact, unless your is ruined and srewed on like my cougar...

I like the way they look, but I'd have to see a picture of the entire car to decide for sure.

I was a little skeptical when I first saw these, but that looks fantastic painted. It really looks like a proper stopping point for the trim. Great job.

Looks good. I left the hard plastic sections on mine and deleted the rubber sections. I didn't mind the look of the trim, but it got a little distorted when I took it of to paint the car so I just decided to leave it off. Has anyone ever seen any nos pieces for sale?

There is any easy fix for the warped molding. If you remove the aluminum backing from the vinyl side molding it will lay flat again. Then all you need is some heavy duty 3M molding tape and you're all set.

I will definitely give it a try. I didn't know there was an aluminum backing. I gotta go dig those out of my garage and revisit this. It really doesn't look bad with the moldings terminated at the wheel wells either though.

I think you could do something similar with the stock plastic trim cut down with a hack saw and some epoxy.

Good point.  Might be a cool project for my '88 in the future.

I remember seeing this, never thought to comment. Calls to mind old wraparound bumpers that did just "end" but with a rolled/tapered finish like that. Very factory-appearing!

i like it alot. was it C&C machined or did you just get fancy with an angle grinder?
 either way, very impressive work!

They took about 1-1.5 hrs each,  funny thing is I thought the other 3 would be easier. Lol
So the answer is heck no...how much are they worth?
