Title: Upper Control Arm interest?
Post by: andrew beedle on April 05, 2010, 09:27:50 PM
I am in the process of having some adjustable upper control arms made for the 86 T-Bird and was wondering if there was any interest in a set of these. They will have Spherical rods ends with teflon inner coating. The Adjustable link is painted or powder coated steel. These are set up for 1/2 inch diameter grade 8 bolts on the rod end side and 1/2 diameter or factory on the other end. I am getting one set made for myself for sure so let me know if there is an interest and I may be able to get some more made.

I don't think I can beat the CHE price of $135 a set because I just don't have the quanity to bring the price down but $175-200 will be about the price depending on power coat and machine labor costs. This is about the price of upper control arms of this design such as edelbrock uppers for the mustangs on summit racing so considering the small amount of quanity here the price is pretty reasonable.

GM A-body upper control arms are a direct fit IIRC.

Where do these mount at? I though the strut was the upper controll arm, or is this for the back of the car?

Rear upper ;)

And to the thread starter: any plans to make lowers..?

I made one set for my car about five years ago but wasn't planning on making any more but I still have the Solidworks 3D model so I could make more. I actually made a set of fixed length upper control arms five years ago as well (which will soon be for sale!) but because the car has been lowered so much I need adjustable upper to correct my pinion angle to get rid of a driveline vibration.

I really prefer the adjustable spring weight jacker models.  You can move it up and down to get the height you want and you can also load the passenger side for the drags.

I probably be replacing these eventually with straight tubing with rod ends on both end with no spring mounts and run coil overs

Can anyone tell me what the C-C measurement is on the upper control arms for our cars?  I think the 83-88's are the same but mine is an 83 if makes a difference.

Did using the adjustable upper fix your drive line vibration?  How low is the car?  What springs, are you using bumpsteer?

I read the reply for the uppers, but does anyone have the c-c measurement of the lowers? Andrew?
I've seen 18 1/16", but haven't found if that was a confirmed c-c.

You guys do know this is a 4.5 year old thread? ;)

Might try a PM to Andrew, I'm not sure if he regularly posts here these days, but he might get the email notification...

The lowers are 3/8" to 1/2" longer than Fox Mustang lowers but if you put the Mustang lowers on our cars it will suck the rear end towards the front of the car and the rear end looks goofy in the wheel wells.  Not to mention is throws some geometry off as well which is probably more important but some seem not to care.

With that stock Fox Mustang LCA's are 17-5/8" long which put the Fox T-Birds right around 18" to 18-1/8".  The Fox T-Bird UCA's are well documented to be 10-1/4".

Interesting,  I have a set of LCA's for a 05 stang that measure 18 1/8 - 18 1/4.  I would have to use coilovers of some sort but they should work.

Not sure if the bushings are the same dimensionally or if the angle they bolt in is the same. I would do a little checking before installing them.

I've seen some companies advertise 79-04 Mustang control arms are the same but other companies break them down to 79-93, 94-98, 99-04, and 05+. So with that I'd double check those controls arms before installing them.

I plan to double check when I can pull the stock ones out.  Besides, "Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.":D  In all seriousness,  I could just fab a whole new set in the shop, just trying to use old parts if possible.

Here is the dimensions of the lower control arms. This is from my Solidworks CAD file of what I currently run on my car. This control arm was designed from the original one off the car.
