ok, I read the axle deciphering post but it did not give me what I needed. I have a 1987 cougar 8.8 and I need to know if the mustang axles are the same or not, because the chart did not have an 8.8 cougar rear. I need to change them because one of the bearing surfaces is shot. I was looking for a shorter axle so my tires don't rub as much. And could I have the difference in length if there is. One more thing I don't want to buy aftermarket ones because I want to change everything to 31 spline long down the road. Thanks any help would be appreciated.
If you have the axle out of the housing, just measure it and compare to the info on the chart.
The axles themselves in that rear are going to be longer, but whether you have a wider housing or not, you'll just need to grab a tape measure and have at it.
i think all housings are the same. mustangs axles are 3/4'' shorter then ours. mark 7's are 3/4'' wider
i also did a search a couldn't find a direct answer. but i really didn't look very long either
The direct answer is this...
Measure what you have and compare it to the chart found in this post

Don't guess...
Also it means we'd be able to add useful information to that chart concerning the XR-7 8.8
ok, for the cause lol hopefully I will change out my gears this weekend and do away with my 80mph grinding vibration. thanks guys
The Fox Mustang axle length is 29-5/32". If you go to the shorter axles it will change the brake geometry but you most likely already knew that. I swapped from Fox to SN95 on my Coupe and have the Fox axles in my T-Bird so I am pretty familiar with those length axles.
A helpful website for axle length information is here:
