Title: 17 wheel size
Post by: Miah on March 18, 2010, 12:44:23 AM
I'm looking at the 17' for my 86. I'll need to ditch the 14' when I get the 11in break swap done. Do I need to worry about the offset or 17/7 17/8 17/9 17/10 ? This will be stock axel and such. I am worried about rubbing the tire wells. I would like to use a 245/45 17 tire.
Wouldn't mind doing a thick on the back and thinner on front.

Or if you know of another online store with some kick'n 15-17in 4 luggerz kick that out. Though only looking to spend about upto 160 per wheel.

I have 17x9 up front wearing 255 40 17's, and 17x10.5 out back with 275 40 17's.There's room under there. The 245 45 17's seemed a little narrow to me on the 9 inch wheels. It's up to the owner (you) to do what YOU like though.I had to remove my quad shocks, but that wasn't a big deal.

Thanks Vinnietbird. You answered perfectly. I didn't want to get a set of rims that wouldn't fit under the wheel wells. I like the ruber to be at least flush with the edge of the rim, I know what you mean by looking skinny. I would deff go with something wider to fill out the rim better.

245 40 17's up front,and 255 40 17's out back...excellent sizing.I got bigger tires because I bought the wheels that had them as a package.I didn't think they would fit,but they did.

I have 275 40 17's on the back of the vert, and also a lincoln rear. I just catch the very outside of the wheels because the rear is wider. you shouldn't have any problems.

I just put 17X9 ET20 cobras with 245/45/17's on all four on my car last night and they fit pretty good, no rubbing so far. Mines a 87 though so i dont know how they will fit your 86.

2007 Chrome Shelby GT500

If they fit with the 86 cougar spindles I will put them on see what they look like on the car and enjoy be4 I start putting on the 88 mustang spindles ( 11in brake conversion ). I think only thing I'm missing for the break conversion is the 1/4 - 3/16 adapter, and a spare foot to help with bleading the breaks ( maybe the boss will lend that though )

Just wondering but do you have any idea what offset you are running? I've seen 17x9s stick out past the fender lip with the wrong offset, which looks goofy:hick:

Here is a quick pic. Wheels fit on the cougar spindles.  Little rub on the front strut, but will have to see how the mustang spindles do. May need to cut off a small portion of top strut dust cover.

It was like that when i got it. It's on the fix list. I'm not sure how the previous owner managed to bend it up like that.
