Title: grille mod
Post by: hypostang on March 12, 2010, 11:19:12 PM
I had a little "free time " tonight after I put my kids to bed ,
I thought I would try something I was inspired to do by seeing RDOG's son's car
While I pirated the idea I did do it slightly different

Let me know what y'all think :D

Looks like a lot of work.  Did you start with an aero nose or a grill?

The finish work will take a while

I did that same mod about 11 years ago.Took a lot of sanding and shaping to get it just right, but worth it in the end.Nice start.

No,that car, bless it's heart died a cruel death not long after the mod.I was crossing the road and a 4 door,4 wheel drive, dually pickup ran a stop sign and rammed the right rear 1/4 of the Bird, causing the car to do a 180 (breaking the wheel from the axle),and when the car spun around,it caught the curb of the small bridge I was about to cross and the car flipped off the bridge onto it's roof.I was disoriented, and didn't notice the car was upside down until i climbed the little hill and looked down and I saw my brand new shiny dual exhaust facing the sky.I had bought that car brand new. Now,I take pics of most everything.

Very nice! I think it gives it a nice, aggressive look, while looking like it just "could have" come that way. Good job!

Shiny Side Up!

It looks great! Different but very stock looking. You are causing me to lean into using a 1987-88 nose... Playing musical chairs in my head over eader panels... Which one gets left standing? I have never before had such indecisiveness in my life! LOL!

Thanks , I actually really like it. I was planning on switching to a TC header because I really dislike the stock 87/88 grille, But then I spent my Header panel money on Turbine wheels . Then I saw the pic of RDOGs son's car and decided to try my own style  (which turns out was Vinnie's style ) But I think it's a vast improvement over the stock grille
 I think I'll keep it :D

That's funny because I actually do like the stock LX grille and the pattern that intentionally mimicks the heavy bars of the 1960 grille. Of course I like the Turbo Coupe header... Always have. However I like to be a little different and not necessarily do the typical and ordinary.

What would rock though is a set of rectangular sealed beam four eyes in a 87-88 header panel. Hmmmm....

I even thought up another idea... Leave out the aero headlamps and put in single sealed beams a-la early Mustang SVO style...

I am really going to invest and try a few different things to get the right look I want. I'll know what's right when I see it done.

.... minutes later now... excuse me while I borrow your picture... I like the early SVO look on it... Maybe I have found my look!

Just make sure you post pics of every different combo :D
I like the svo style idea , that I would like to see
I had an 84 svo  , and a lot had no idea what it was
BTW i bought a NOS 88 grille just in case I didn't like  what I did

I dunno , I'm thinking about selling it to someone who will use it .
I paid 30.00 for it that is all I would want if I decide to sell it

what style is a NOS? like a full TC nose?
Title: grille mod
Post by: Watchdevil on March 16, 2010, 11:55:05 PM
In a matter of a few minutes I came up with this idea to try and it seems it should have been more obvious. Once I can see an idea I can embrace it.

Now I have to sit on this and think about it.. Let it simmer and see how I feel later... This would be much easier to do than four headlamps. As much as I like four eyes, I also like the smoother nose of the 87-88. Would be a good compromise. I can even still use headlamp that maintain the amber halo effect I like.

I think it works because styling trends have moved away from flush looking aero headlamps. When I think about this I think about how it applies to my Mustang which looks like it has recessed round sealed beams like the classic cars. Of course they have a blacked out surround with a clear lens over them.

Yeah the only NOS part I have on my Bird is the transluscent rectangular steering wheel center trim with the bird emblem on it.
