how or what do you use to strip the factory coating off these?

I've used carb cleaner, water, and Strip Klean. this stuff just gums up and clogs my wire brush.

Bead blasting. I did that with mine then polished them.Or,bead blast them and spray on some clear coat.

I used Engine Brite , then Dawn dish liquid then I ran them through my dishwasher :D
Of course I painted mine wrinkle black instead of polishing them

I tried it,not worth the time and effort. The oil fill on the passenger side is under the throttle cable bracket, and the oil fill on the driver side is under the intake.Just use EFI covers. If you don't like what you have, save up the money til you do,do some trading, whatever, but do it right the first time.

What does the wrinkle black look like and where do you get that paint from?

I could only find one case of where someone used the bed coating spray to paint something engine related and it happened to be a motorcycle (http://"http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=288710"). It looks like it held up everywhere except top end, there is started flaking (http://"http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showpost.php?p=1597044&postcount=11"). I'd just use wrinkle black high temp engine paint....

It does look like bed liner coating. I am looking to do a hammer like finish on my valve covers and intake. I just need to find the stuff.

KRYLON makes hammer finish rattle cans , and Wal- Mart stocks it

I picked up some Rustoleum Hammer finish. We will see how it turns out on the valve covers first. I was wondering if I need to spray a base of black enamal then spray the grey hammer finish so I get the two colors?

No,just the paint, and maybe a good self-etching primer first.CLEAN them like crazy first.sand them a little to give the paint something to grab on to as well.

I'm thinking about using that 'hammered metal" paint on some of my stuff.
I think Jerry (daminski) used it under his Evolution Cougar..?

I read the instructions and this Rustoleum paint does not require it before painting. Thats why I bought it over the Krylon stuff. The Krylon wanted primer and something else. Plus the krylon will work on some metal. The Rustoleum said it does work on metal and just needs a cleaning and spray. I have a big parts dishwasher at work to make sure it is clean before painting.

I will get pics up after I paint them next week at work. I am going to spray the intake, valve covers and any engine bracket. I may even paint the 130 3G alt too.

use a wax and grease remover. it smells like lighter fluid.
