Title: HO conversion opinion
Post by: hypostang on March 09, 2010, 08:08:59 AM
Ok , here is my question
I am fixin to put a timing chain in my 88 5.0  here in the somewhat near future, A friend if mine has a stock 88 HO cam  he said I can have . Would it be a total waste of time to install said cam  # 19 injectors  and a mustang ECM  while I am that far into it without changing any other engine parts ?
Or should I wait and do heads, and  upper intake as parts are collected ?.

I'm doing the work myself  so labor cost is not an issue at all .

The true dual exhaust is also in the plans before the end of summer.

 Thoughts and opinions please

a lot more steps involved than replacing a timing chain. I would hold off and get some shorty headers, h/x-pipe, and a pair of free flowing lers.

save your pennies and buy a good used 87-92 mustang longblock.

I think I would wait and do all the engine stuff at one time.

IF you can also get a HO throttle body & EGR spacer, I'd go for it... Still you need the exhaust system to make it really breathe, that really should a first mod... Stock E7 HO Heads won't give but about 20Hp, so really aren't the major bottle neck... You want it to really go, you need to port the Hell out of them, get GT40s or better, aftermarket...

Why do you think it needs a timing chain??? The '88 SO I've seen had a double roller chain from factory... The '87 had a std chain...

I'm putting a water pump on and I have a brand new timing chain in the box from a previous car that I have sold and this car has 177,000 so I thought it would be a  preventive measure .
