Title: Why does my shifter sound like a vacuum leak?
Post by: mtgmike on March 08, 2010, 10:27:08 AM
Forgive me, all my Fords have been 5 spds until this Tbird. My car sounds like it has a vacuum leak as I shift from Park to drive, etc. The tone changes in each gear, loudest in D, well, OD. If I jiggle it just right back and forth a little, the hissing sound stops.

It's more than likely the horseshoe on the steering column that releases the parking brake when you go from park to drive.  Look under the hood at the vacuum tree on the top right side and disconnect "B/R" (the one in the middle) and cap it off..

If it's a column shifter that's your problem.

If it is hissing it is leaking, cap it off.
The car will run better without vacuum leaks
