What do you do when you have these two cars sitting around doing nothing:
93 Ford Festiva L and 93 Mercury Capri Xr2 (turbo)
Well, you build a "Fastiva" of course.
The Capri is a decent little car, pretty fun, and probably good for mid-15's at 85-90mph, and I got 35mpg when I was driving it, but it had a rotted out chunk of frame rail that took a sizable amount of floor with it.
But at 1800lbs (or less) the Festiva is over 700lbs lighter than the Capri. Put 2+2 together, even if I leave the Capri engine (Mazda B6T 1.6L DOHC turbo) at a stock 132hp and 136lb-ft of torque, the Festiva is probably still good for mid to high-14's and should be able to get at least 40mpg still (I routinely got 48mpg on average in the Festiva). Nobody keeps a turbo engine bone stock though, and 200hp is *too* easy to get to on these engines.
Sounds like a killer daily driver to me.
My progress so far...
I started off by pulling the B6T and G25MR trans out of the Capri. I also pulled the entire engine harness including where it runs through the firewall into the interior. Inside it ends with three plugs to the ECU and then a plug you splice into the Festiva's wiring for things like ignition power and starter trigger.
Heres the Capri engine bay before I yanked the motor... I had gotten started on freeing up the harness and such things here.
And then the next day or so I had the engine ready to pull...
And the next day or so I had it out...
Only a couple things I need from the Capri now, the intercooler (Its really not that great but I'll use it for now), and the interior part of the harness (I'm trying to trace it up through the dash so I dont have to extend the wires). I may end up using the brakes off the car as they are a HUGE upgrade to the tiny Festiva brakes. After that the rest of the car will be up for parts.
And now today I started on the Festiva, and got the 63hp Mazda B3 (1.3L) pulled.
Even with 181,000 miles and sitting the last year or so the engine ran awesome. It ran a 17.95 at 76.1mph in a car under one ton. Probably one of the most reliable engines ever, does its job perfectly. Heres a quick video of its final run, for the record. And incase anyone happens to want it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6weaiVV5u2c
Thats all for now though, I'm hoping to get some more done tomorrow, but its a 40 minute drive to my dads... if not for that, I probably would have it done by now.
Dude, I'm loving this build!!! I had an 88 Festiva and loved it! It was such a fun car.
Put the Festiva engine in the Capri and really throw people off. :rollin:
I think the Capri weighs close to the festys GVWR, lmao.
But I have thought of that.
You are the good kind of crazy. :giggle:
That's cool....are you on turboford? Just wonder what they (might) think of this lol.
Reminds me, yesterday, at the junkyard, I saw a 2 door Tempo with a 2.3, thought about how sick it'd be to slap on the turbo stuff from a TC and pick on people, lol.
Almost ironically, it was butted up against the TC I got stuff from...;)
I havent posted this on TF (I havent posted there in a while anyway) because its not *really* Ford, its all Mazda, badge engineering. Maybe I'll do it anyway.
That Tempo 2.3 is a pushrod motor, nothing in common with the Lima. They're based off the old 6 cyls. Would be need to see one turbo'd though.
Some of todays progress...
Got the last of the wiring I needed out of the Capri. The big one is what plugs into the engine harness and then gets wired to the Festiva's ignition switch wiring. The small bundle of wires pointing north is all I need. Two wires deliver current to the fuel pump, a big blue wire for +12v constant, a wire for switched +12v, a wire for the check engine light, and a couple grounds. That big bundle pointing east is unused.
The smaller plug with the three wires also plugs into the engine harness, but under the hood. Two wires go to the coil connection and provide tach signal, and one goes to the big main power fuse.
I also ordered a new clutch set off ebay, the old one is toast...
The new one is a "XTD Stage 3 Race Clutch", its a 6 puck disc with 'copper ceramic' friction material. Best part is under $160 shipped. I've been told they hold up really well for being a "cheap ebay" setup.
Trans is mounted, rear mount is the Capri mount cut up and welded. Front mount is the Capri round mount, moved forward a couple inches, with angle iron connecting it to the transmission.
Gotta pull it back out, trim up the angle iron, maybe some paint. Weld the rear mount up completely, change out the axle seals, work on adapting the shifter linkage, and a couple other things before the motor can go in.
Keep the progress info coming. This is a cool project.I want a festiva....just a stock one for hauling parts and runs to the yard.
You say that now, but once you get to driving one around it will mysteriously become your sport's little sidekick :p
Get a metro to haul parts with :D
I agree, this is a great project. That's one of the many things I miss about mine. It's amasing how much stuff you could cram into it with the back seat down.
This is WIN
I dunno, I had a blast in my 1987 Turbo sprint 1.0L . Those engines are HARD to kill. Bumped the boost from 6-13 PSI, adjusted the MAF spring, cold air intake, and a hood scoop for the TMIC. G-tech meter went from 68hp to 114hp was gettin in to the 14's. Sold it now, building another but I'm goin for 20PSI :mullet: Hauled a complete but disassembled atc 200m in the back once.

Build is lookin good, keep us updated! Theres nothing funnier than seeing the dumb look on a guys face when he cant keep up to your econobox :rollin: Lotsa good times in that little car.
Scott
I really wanted a turbo sprint at one point, but they seem to be quite hard to find.
Guess I'm getting what I wanted now, in a bit bigger form :D
Drove to manitoba and back last summer, averaged 48mpg over almost 2200Km :raspberry always got 43mpg driving 50/50 and driving it hard from every light!
They are getting scarce but can be found if ya look hard, TeamSwift is a great site for locating one. But I think you'll be preoccupied with this project for a while yet.
Scott
Neat swap, keep us updated!
Heres my MPG tracking page for the car when it was stock
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/bhazard/festiva
Best is 52.9 as you can see :P
I'm hoping to maintain at least 40 mpg after the swap.
+1
I can't wait to see the final product. :D
I can only hope that it comes close to this one...

This very car now has a running 2.5L KLZE V6 in it, in different hands. First known front engine V6 swap into a festiva. Obviously the Shogun was the original V6 festiva but those are RR.
Lotta tweaking to do but its sitting in there finally!
he must like this festiva better than his bird, because it took him a year to swap out the 2.3 in his bird:rollin:
No, it took me a year to get STARTED.
Same here pretty much, the festiva and the capri have been sitting since July when I got the bird back on the road, lol.
If you dont have more projects than you have time for, your doin something wrong!
Scott
Right, I just put money down on another festiva today, this ones gonna be a 1.8L BP engine out of an escort gt with an auto. Body on this car has over 250k miles and looks great.
Its entirely possible that I could have this thing running tomorrow :DDDD
"Fastiva" lol, you got a really good build in the mix right now.
This looks like it could be a 'fastiva' aswell

Scott
PRICELESS!!! and i was proud of hauling a 289 and an AOD in the trunk of my 88LTD (can you say low rider) , An ATC frame is awkward no matter how you try to stab it.
Ive heard of that harley vtwin festiva before... thats crazy.
Ohhh... and Ethan... eat this

:D
Awesome! I got a screamin deal on a coats tire machine, I got it delivered to work and I know it'll fit in the trunk of the cougar, I just have no way to lift it out once I get home! still thinkin about it though!:mullet:
That engine sounds great, gonna straight pipe it or try to keep it stealthy? cut out maybe?
Scott
I'm gonna try to quiet it down. I've got a glasspack that'll fit on the downpipe which is only 2". Then ill adapt it to the festiva exhaust which is 1.75". Eventually ill have a full 2.5" on it...but I want it choked down a bit for now. I'm limited to 10psi anyway til I get a chipped ECU.
. That was quick!
All I can say is I've been determined. LOL
Not to mention I have a 35 minute drive just to get to the thing. I've put a lot of miles on my bird in the last month hahaha.
There, freed up some space up front. 4awg from the battery to the starter, and replaced the little black wire going to the main fuse with the equivalent from the capri harness, the red wire you see. Thats also going to the starter. That wire and the battery wire are both crimped together into a 1/0 ring connector which goes right on the starter lug.

Finally got to drive it tonight! Just down the road and back. Ended up having to replace both front brake lines as the ends were rusted to and blew as soon as they started seeing brake pressure. Got the radiator hooked up, still no fan yet though. It didnt really get too hot though even with the single core festy rad. I got a two core rad but the inlet is busted on it :/ Gonna have to find a slim fan either way.
Still plenty of kinks to work out but it was so relieving taking it just down the road and back. Gotta get an exhaust hooked up, even if its just the tiny festiva exhaust for now.
The capri front brakes work quite well on a car that weighs 700 lbs less than the car they were made for. Now just gotta replace those worthless things in the back.
Hopefully this weekend I can get it closer to being on the road and get some video.
Might have this thing on the road today! Need to get off here and get the registration done haha.
Been driving it since yesterday. Its obviously a rolling work in progress. I have the front end lowered a bit much, the 195/50/15's rub a little on turns and bumps. Im gonna try reversing some spring clamps in there to raise it a little. Need some money to make some coilovers with. Need aspire struts to fit the xr2 wheels on the back.
Here it is as it stands...

Oh and I guess I have a bit much power for a stock festy exhaust?
BACKFIRE! ....Err, Exhaust pop, I mean... Does that thing have a cat? Nice work by the way, why do you know so much about parts interchange on these things?!
Looking good! Fast work on the swap.:burnout:
Yup its my DD right now. Prolly good for 15's at the moment. Still has stock festiva exhaust and limited to 10psi. Got some work ahead of me...
Also picked up a 92 gl auto with 254k miles on the body. Got an aspire brake swap and 1.8l BP engine from an escort ft to swap in. All for $800. The car is friggin nice but I gotta put another trans in it. It only goes forward.
You did great work on this, I did not know the Fiesta had a Madza engine? I knew they were made by Kia but did not know about the Madza connection.
I have a Ford Aspire parts car in my yard but I don't know if any of those parts interchange or would help you.

This is hot-rodding at it best!
TED
The aspire is basically the same platform as the FESTIVA (not Fiesta :P). The front knuckles and rear axle beam swap over for a huge upgrade in braking power, and also gets you a much more common 4x100 bolt pattern. Aspire rear beam has a sway bar built in. The front swaybar is a nice upgrade with a little work. The rear struts have a higher spring perch for more tire clearance. The engine is the same except for a roller valvetrain. The trans is the same except for a lower diff gear.
In the festiva world the aspires are usually just referred to as "parts cars", same for the capri I used for my swap :P.
Oh yea, the festiva, aspire, capri, and escort gt all use mazda b series engines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B_engine
The transmissions are mazda e, f, and g series transmissions. E series was the little econobox transmission in the festiva/aspire, 4 or 5 speed. F series is the stronger one made for economy and the G trans is the sporty one found in the escort gt and capri. Should hold 300+ hp.
The good thing is the stock festiva automatic (3 speed F series) has been known to hold plenty of power stock and well over 300hp with some mods. Thats why Im keeping it when I do the BP swap in the new car (which is my gf's). BP + turbo + auto = who knows? 12's?
ya gotta make it go in reverse before you do the swap on your girlfriends car!!!!
Lil update...
Just filled it up, 37.5 mpg. Thats with the o2 sensor unplugged. I have it unplugged because of the crack in the manifold that goes straight to the o2. Im guessing its drawing in air causing the ecu to run it rich. I bet 40mpg would be reached with the ecu running closed loop.
Put 01-02 Kia Rio struts and springs in the front. At first I left them alone and the car rode ridiculously high in the front. This caused my drivers side CV axle to expand too far and tore the boot to shreds. Got another axle from napa and cut 2.5 coils out, it sits perfect now and still rides really nice. Way better than cut festiva springs on 180,000 mile festiva struts.
Before this I wanted to build coilovers for the front but now I think Im gonna skip on that. At least for now.
Heres how it sits now.
On the immediate agenda -
Alignment (I have it going straight but Id still like to get it done, I know camber and caster are off.)
Exhaust (still breathing through that 1 3/4 crinkle bent pipe)
Aspire rear struts (so I can get the capri wheels on the back)
Exhaust manifold crack (I think Ill try filling it with header paint first lol)
I need to do a little work on the motor mounts too, nothing major though.
Im gonna be swapping out the valve cover today. The one on the car now is cracked in front of the oil fill and a crack runs through the threads of the fill too... no idea how the previous owner(s) managed that. Got the junkyard cover for $25 and spraybombed it, poor mans powdercoating.
Looks good. Still blows me away that people do this stuff, but very cool.

38.8 mpg out of 344.5 miles, still got the o2 unhooked. Just got it aligned. I have no doubt that 40 mpg is manageable. Beats my best in the capri by .3 mpg. I really wanna get it to the track too lol.
Nice! I saw one today that looks just like yours. I thought it may of been you until it took off (or tried too). He was slooooooooooooooow!
When netting 38mpg, how are you driving? I peaked @ 31.X mpg once... that was a trial of my patience, and once it ran out I quickly returned to 19mpg were I belong!
