Title: project spoolup
Post by: fordguy545 on March 04, 2010, 10:26:35 PM
So, my tbird seemed like its been getting less and less low end boost so I figured its time to change that.  Guys on turboford thought that the way I had my collector designed, it would be a little detrimental to getting this big holset HX35 spooled up.  My main concern was the $50 ebay wastegate I was using not to mention it would no longer go down to 12psi.  Lowest it would go was 22psi   So the collector is getting remade, and twin tial 38mm Vband wastegates.  I think I will also put the new engine in while I'm at it.  New engine should be good to 8000+ rpm

What I started with

Took the easy way out to get the turbo and manifold out - took head off

Well, This is all progressing pretty smoothly!  Glad too because its gotta be back together by the end of the month to have about a week of break in time before going racing!

You gonna make the wastegates dump out of stacks coming out of the hood?
Title: project spoolup
Post by: fordguy545 on March 04, 2010, 10:42:11 PM
nope, they will end up back in the downpipe
This will probably be the only twin scroll, twin wastegate WITH A/C in existence, ROFL

Every time I see a post like this, I think "man I wish I could weld". Then I think "man I wish I had a place to weld", then I think "man, I wish I even had something worth welding"... In other words I am jealous and envious of your skills and your nice shiney stuff, heh.

I think you need a bigger TURBO COUPE badge on the trunk lid;)

That looks significantly better than your last collector.  It will be interesting to see how it works.

Holy boosted Bird shiznit Batman! That's awesome!

Out of curiosity, are you going to build a brace or bracket of sorts to help hold all that up, or is all to be "hung" off of the exhaust bolts/studs?

Forgive my ignorance, just can't imagine that being a featherweight setup there...:D

Who said anything about featherweight? Rofl. Two ton Autocross car.

You're gonna throw me out the passenger window this year huh?

You bet!

As for the brace, I had one going to the block before, but it was absolutely impossible to get in or out with the head on, so maybe I can move it to a motormount bolt or something so it wont get caught on stuff.

Very apt description I might add. Very apt indeed.

Nope.  Still not even close to having this one maxed out yet. 26psi made 346whp/398wtq and these turbos are good for high 30psi or more.  Gotta love diesel turbos:hick:

Got a test fit in the car done today and refit the downpipe since I leveled out the turbo .  Fits almost better than I thought it would.  NO interference at all with a/c stuff and it no longer hits the pipe coming from the heater core

Nice!

I have a split scroll turbo here I thought about using down the road on something. No real plans for it at present though.

What material is on the header now? Looks pretty nice all one color.

Good luck with the revised setup! Should get great response with it.

Post by: fordguy545 on March 12, 2010, 09:07:29 PM
its just high temp header paint.  VHT flameproof or something like that.  The BBQ paint I used on the turbine housing actually held up fairly well and the ceramic coating I had put on the header originally didnt hold up very well anyway so it'll look nice for a little while, lol.

Post by: flylear45 on March 13, 2010, 05:37:23 AM
You didn't have luck with the ceramic? That's interesting.

I'm going to be yanking my hotside to paint and wrap it soon, and am looking for options. I've used the BBQ black in the past with decent results, also, so maybe I'll just stay with that.

One other question, Fordguy. I like the way you modified your AC lines to route the away from heat as much as possible. Did you just go to a local hydraulic hose shop to get those made up?

On an aside note, my neighbor got one of those 42mm wastegates for his 2.3 BMW, and it was a POS also. It never sealed and leaked right out of the box.

Those Tials are gonna be great, and having two is really the way to go on a split scroll. Good engineering, bud!

well, the ceramic was good till my distributor loosened and turned 25 degrees retarded at autox.  All the header stuff got so hot, the ceramic flaked off and melted the a/c drain off the firewall.  The a/c hose was made up at a local autoparts store.  Although I have yet to be able to get the a/c system to be completely sealed.  All the refridgerant keeps leaking out.

That block looks really nice. You didnt paint the trans though??? ha

You gonna need an underdrive so you dont spin your accessories at 10000 rpm? That'd be some cold AC.
Title: project spoolup
Post by: fordguy545 on March 16, 2010, 09:42:01 PM
Why's the trans need to be painted brad??  Ya cant see it!!  And the a/c compressor will never see that rpm because it will never be on while under that kind of rpm.  Though the p/s and alt may, lol.

Hmm, looks like I actually got something done tonight!

Not going to be too much longer before its ready to start, but I still have to sort out attatching the lines to the wastegates and the final routing of the turbo oil drainback.

I was kiddin bout the paint.

The overspun power steering will be nice for autox. The overspun alt will help charge the flux capacitor disguised as a holset.
