Title: digital dash
Post by: lakenheath24 on March 04, 2010, 07:12:11 PM
On my 88 sport, I was putting in a stock radio and heard pffft.  Next thing i know the right side of the display is out....from the sppedo to the right.  the backlight works but the LED's are inop.  I changed a blown fuse and the right side with the digital gauges are good.  Is it a bulb or did I burn up the cluster?

so you have a lime light only,, no digit display?
if so,, the manual is pretty intense in trouble shooting this but id gander from a guess that yes you are right, the speedo is hosed.

snap a pic of key on engine off

I have a similar problem. I was messing around behind the radio trying to see how to fix a sound problem and heard the same noise, however I have all my digital working the thing that is no longer working is the dash display when I turn on the headlights, One goes one and the other goes off, how weird is that. Any ideas what I could do to fix this?

Jcassity, here is a pic.  I replaced the blown fuse and the tach/gauges came back..it's the other stuff that is AFU.

With the headlights off, the instrument lights are on full bright.
With the headlights on the lights are controlled by the dimmer control on the headlight switch.

In that picture, the far right display of my dash doesnt light up, like if the sun or another light hits it right i cant see what it says but there is no lighting. also my cruise control doesnt work, thought it might have to do with that too.

Oh mercy me, Ive been on here for this long with little help and now i see I am not alone. I havent logged on to check this place in forever but after the nice weather yesterday i had the urge to start up the Cat. Ive been plagued with the same issues, at first erratic speedo now none. And at first no tripminder, I remedied that by cleaning the contacts on the r.h. side of the gauge cluster.

As for the dashlights not working with the headlights, I had the same issue as well as a problem in the wiper circut. Mind you folks this started with a buzz in my speakers and a faulty heater core.
I discovered grounding the cigarette lighter fixed the backlight/headlight/wiper issue.
After that my 2month out of warranty alternator kicked the bucket.
I replaced it with little issue until the wiring harness going into the alternator melted down right at the plug.

These cars seem to be a wiring disaster, I am personally ready to gut the whole thing and cough up the 700 for a painless kit.

....no speedo, no cruise, door chime is erratic. something went screwy in my column as well is my worst fear. Key still turns power on but solenoid signal wire doesnt work.
sorry for the poor format/rant , i need to sleep on this again.

belive it or not, but the mojority of your problems (excluding the alt) could be a bad ignition switch.

ok,, just the facts please,, i search for all threads posted by you and i see none in electrical tech stated by you.  It says you have gotten little help but i dont see you asking.

again, facts.  Cant seem to understand why you would say this unless your expecting wires to talk and tell  you where they are jacked up.

sounds like  healthy list, it would be better if you had threads started about these.
