Title: Thundercat Dyno Day
Post by: gumby on March 03, 2010, 07:42:46 PM
The cancellation of CatJam this year sparked a fire under my ass to attempt forming a get together for the members of FTBCF. I attended CJ08, and it was awesome to get together with so many thundercat enthusiasts in one place.
I got a hold of Greg(5.8fastcat), and we are hammering out some details; putting together a thundercat dyno day. We have roughed out an intinerary so far. What we need now is a gauge of how many people want to attend.
Thundercat Dyno Day - Hosted by Speedy Dyno (http://"http://www.speedydyno.com/") in Owensboro, KY - July 17th, 2010 This is the basic outline of activities we have planned:
arrive Friday night, free-for-all
dyno runs Saturday morning
semi-organized lunch
remaining dyno pulls if any, general hanging out
break for supper, free-for-all
cruise-in
hotel parking lot party, free-for-all
leave for home Sunday morning
This may be adjusted depending on how many people show interest and chose to partite. Obviously, you would be free to travel and show up whatever time you like. Nobody is gonna force you to show up Friday night, or stay over till Sunday morning. :D
Im sure Greg will be along here as well to fill in any of the actual dyno day particulars, cruise night details, and hotel information as we gather it.
So, who is ready to hang out with some other thundercat fans? Post up, and discuss!

We have DynoDays thur out the summer.
We normally have about 10-15 cars that get on the rollers and alot of bench racing and showing off your car/cruise in.
We start about 9am on the dyno and go till about 12 or so we break out the grill and cook up some burgers and dogs.
We can rent a pavllion and one of the area parks to chill out @ and let the kids play if you guys want.
We are have a cruise in @ a local resturant that starts around 5pm and goes till 9pm and then its back to the motel for pizza or whatever we decide to do.
We are very open on what goes on and when. No way we can every have an event like CatJam just want to have a get together.

How are hotels? Restaurants in the proximity?
Count me in, finances and time pending. Id love to strap the Pontiac down and see how disappointed I'll be.
Also Greg, is your dyno capable of putting a load on the car? Like a Mustang dyno?
Title: Thundercat Dyno Day
Post by: 5.8fastcat on March 04, 2010, 08:02:05 AM
There are about 5 hotel really close to the shop and the cruise in area.
Just kinda wanted to get a ideal how many people ae are talking about and I can go talk to them to see if the can give us a price break.
Owensboro is the FastFood capital there was a study done a couple years ago and we had more restaurant per capita per person than any other city in KY. They are grouped on the main strip were the cruise in would be held.
And Yes my dyno is a loading type dyno simaliar to a mustang dyno.

Ray and I (and Julie) are in, but as I said on the phone, I would prefer a weekend before or after this, since the Dayton Air Show is on the weekend of the 17th. I definitely want to get the Vic dyno tuned and get your opinions on MORE HORSEPOWER!

Chuck, i hope you can fit it in your schedule! i was gonna mention sumthin on the phone last night, but i could hear workings in the backround while we were talking diffs.
Ed, buddy, you know you like me more than airplanes! we wanted to move this away from the 4th weekend a lil bit, and the weekend following this one has no cruise night. hope you come out anyhow ;)
Mark, definitely would enjoy your company again as well. is the car boosted yet?
thanks for all the interest so far people! this is gonna be a good time, dont miss out:headbang:

Gumby,
It was far more work than I antited, but yes, it's boosted! To cope with the extra power I am just about finished with a t56 install. Talk about a "snow ball" effect on the drivetrain!
It would be great if there is a good showing at Gregg's place. The gathering in 08 was such an unusal opportunity to spend time time with people who know these cars and meet who's behind the keyboards. Thanks for stepping up to make something else happen.
Mark

Greg,
It wont' compare to the terror ride in your turbo car in 08! That was the wildest ride I ever had on the street! It wasn't just the rapid acceleration, it was the sound of the blowoff valves when the tires unloaded!
Now that the T5 has been replaced, I'm looking forward to banging gears.
Title: Thundercat Dyno Day
Post by: 5.8fastcat on March 05, 2010, 10:51:48 PM
Mark,
LOL, She hooks a little better now. So the acceleration may be a little better.
What did you put in place of the T5????
Title: Thundercat Dyno Day
Post by: 86T-bird on March 06, 2010, 01:17:13 PM
Gregg,
Glad to hear it's hooking up. There is plenty of power!
I replaced the T5 with a T56. It's all up in place, just sorting out the driveshaft length and putting the interior back together.

This get together looks interesting. It would be great if I had the Procharged 512 in the 87 TC by then, but with my work load around here, I will be lucky to get it installed in time.
I still want to put that car on the dyno.....someday. :D :burnout:

we dont care what you bring, just show up!
Greg and I discussed an option at the very beginning of our plans that if there wasnt a large enough response from this board, the actual dyno portion of this event could be opened up to the public anyhow. so there is likely to be all kinds of vehicles on the dyno at this meet.

Me and Seacat might be able to make this. We will be down at my other brothers' house in GA that week, but we might be able to leave a day or two early to make it to this. The only thing about doing that is, we would have to take 3 cars down to GA instead of just 2 so that me and Seacat can have our Cats to stop by with on the way home. :)
I probably wouldn't be doing to the dyno, but it'd be great to hang with y'all again!

Ok, sadly I cant bring the cat. I have no reason not to jump in the LTD and cruise down there for a weekend. If i can get a few more nickles rubbed together all she needs 50 bucks in exhaust work, and a valve cover gasket and probably a fuel filter. I know it wont touch the cat but. I chased down a little Acura with it last night. I cant say it was easy...but she did it. 170k and still "tickin." Only god knows how long its done that. Ill be there.

Serious blows have been dealt today. I got next weeks schedule at work before i left for lunch today. Ive gone from 36 hours a week to 6. And to top of my frustration when i get home to eat lunch I find a letter from the city giving me 7 days to park my car in the garage. Total BS that we pay someone out of our tax dollars to drive around neighborhoods every month and make sure everyones car moves. The car getting moved is not a big deal i could have it in the garage in 20 minutes if i chose.
...the big deal is finding a second or new job?? Im not giving up hope to make the trip, I will probably be camping though. Any good state parks close??? Not that it entirely matters the back seat of my Crown Vic is bigger than my couch.

I am a moron. I landed myself a half dozen tickets and a few hours in the slammer last night. I cant make the trip for sure now, i have court that week. Young cop on a power trip caught me terrorizing the town on my bike. I had to learn the hard way what those signs saying aircraft used for speed enforcement meant.
...i am quite ashamed of myself, my bike is impounded and on a hold, and the cop nailed me for resisting arrest, the kickstand is broken on the bike so i couldnt just step off of it so they ripped me off of it. I wont try that one again, as the old saying goes you can out run the car you cant outrun the motorola,

im sure you could. but no one is forcing you to strap down and for those interested in a few pulls, there are different advantages to the dyno vs. a T&T night. just depends what you are lookin for.
plus of course the group of board members that will be there hanging around!

Ray and me and Julie will be there. Doing some last minute fix-up on the 460 Crown Vic, and we'll be coming with (at least) that.
A few months ago, the headers melted through plastic A/C box on the firewall. I finally got a new one of those and got some heat-shield from Summit and got the headers recoated. We got all of that stuff in last weekend and now I'm waiting on another fuel pressure gauge and some new header bolts.
Still have to diagnose a low fuel pressure issue, but we're pinging away at it and getting it reassembled.
If worse comes to worse, the trusty Cougar is in order, should the 460 Vic not make the trip.

Long shot at getting the Tbird there. Needs new O2 sensors (going to swap them to 4-wire), clean the evaporator, new blower motor, and find my A/C leak and recharge. :( Getting up at 5 to work on it. Work from 8-12.
I'll come in my Accord if the Dirty Bird don't make it. Reckon I can dyno it instead :mullet:

Yeah, was great to see the birds and cats again. Putting my car on the dyno was real cool. (sorry for a all the smoke in your garage Greg, lol)
Yes, next time we need to all be on the same page where we are going. Would have rather hung out with everyone a little longer.
This is just the shot in the arm I needed to get me remotivated to get some serious work done on my bird. I've been putting off too many things for too long. I see some progress coming this winter.
Was glad to meet all you guys.

ThunderCat Dyno Day was officially a hit with the Scott D Family.
We rolled out of Hoptown around 7:45am Saturday & headed towards the temporary ThunderCat Mecca of Owensboro, KY.
We got to Speedy's around 9:45am after a pit stop for gas and another to get rid of coffee. I got to scope out Da...eerrr ...Paula's 1985 Cougar LS real close & see what kind of stuff'd been done to it. Man, what a work of art, guys. I am still very, very impressed with the car & work put into it. It's cool to see Cougars and T-birds with some awesome cowl-induction hoods, louvers, wheels, and wild motors, but to see one as stock as yours and as clean as yours ...man,
We got to catch the last half of gumby's turn on the dyno. That was cool. Although those runs ruined the whole, "see honey, what we'll do is get Keven (the little one) a TurboCoupe for when he turns 16, it's only a 4-banger so he won't get in trouble with it."
86T-bird got his go on the lie detector, and as soon as the dumps were opened up, you've not heard a 'bird scream like his. That is a cherry looking Fox Thunderbird, you've got, sir. 478hp, was it? I hate to steal ideas, but when we get another project car worked out, I think I'm going to try to give you a run for your money with two less cylinders :flip:
jasontbird let his Thunderbird have a run on the dyno & smoked us out of the way. Man, that car's going to be bad ass when it's done. I've got to give you some serious props for putting that beast of a 'bird on the dyno. If it'd have been my old '86 Cougar, we've have needed some serious kitty litter to clean up the mess that would have come out of every gasket. You, sir, are a brave man & I can't wait to see & hear progress pics and stories of what's being done.
So, after the dyno part of the get together, we all caravanned over to Greg's Garage-mahal for lunch & some more hanging out. After a little bit of sun and a little bit of food, I think we were all ready for a nap, but it was time for the raffle. Now, Keven and I have some more cleaning stuff to add to the current arsenal to keep the 'underbird looking sharp. Thanks to Greg for cooking, Speedy's for providing the food, everyone who donated prizes, and the fellow forum members for good conversation.
Around 1630, we headed over to Grandy's in Henderson, KY, for the Klassix Kruisers Grandy's Cruise-in. Dan & Paula brought their '85 & Jason brought his '85 Thunderbird. We rolled in behind in the chase car. I found out my wife would rather have a '55-57 Bel Air than a second generation Thunderbird, but it's all good. Now I know exactly what to look for when I'm out shopping.
Around 9pm, we headed back south, on US-41, towards the house. All in all, it was fun. I'm looking forward to another one, and I'm definitely bringing the Thunderbird with me. And, if any of you fools post you're going, then say you can't make it, I'll be going to the get together via your house. From there, I'll be kicking you in the pants all the way to our temporary Mecca :punchballs:

It was definitely a good time, and I was glad to see everyone again!
Mark's 86 is polished and pretty amazing. Gumby's creation is quite the Frankenstein, and Jason is just getting started. Nobody mentioned the 93 Crown Vic with the 5.4 Lightning motor - that was one of my favorites!
We'll have to trade some rides next time, I'd love to experience them first hand!
Thanks to everyone who hosted and who helped organize the event. Greg and Joann, Dan and Paula, Gumby and Natalie! Ray, and Julie and I all had a good time.

Sorry for the late chime in, got home late on Sunday and I've been running hard till now!
It was a great event! Particularly as a first time deal, it was a lot of fun. The best part for me was reconnecting with the folks I meet at the 2008 CatJam and meeting the members who were new to me.
In '08 I was a little nervous about driving cross country to meet people from an internet board, but that quickly went away once we got together. The little insight we each have from our written comments, blossoms pretty quick to good conversation.
I have to hand it to Greg and his family for hosting. On Friday he worked 14 hours at the shop, then home to get cleaned up and showed up at the hotel for a few hours to hang out. He was back at the shop at 9AM. If you don't think getting cars set up and running the dyno is work (particularly on a day starting at 90 degrees), you've never been to a dyno day. Once that was wrapped up, we were off to his house where he did hot dogs and burgers for all of us.
The only drawback to the weekend was the heat! Most of us were pretty well "cooked" by 3:30-4:00, with the exception of Dan & Paula, Jason & his fiance' and Scott D. & his family. They had enough left for an evening at a car show! The rest of us took showers (some us to the pool) and met later for dinner.
Special thanks to Dan & Paula for getting the pictures to chronicle the event. It's particularly important to me because I didn't take one pic (too busy running my mouth)!
I had about 7 hours of drive time plus stops. Going home I should have caravaned with Gumby & Katie as my GPS took me up through Indiana and Indianapolis. Hit some big time thunderstorms from Indy to the Michigan border (glad I fixed the wipers...).
On the dyno the car peaked at 472 rwhp & 470 rwtq with the caps on the cutouts and 481 rwhp & 485 rwtq with them open. Horse power peaked at 5,400-5,600, Torque at 4,600 (but it was pretty flat for about 1,200 RPM).
Basics on the combo: 306, OTB Twisted Wedge heads, Tubular GT-40 intake, 1 5/8" long tubes & 2 1/2" exaust, custom cam and 9 PSI on a P600 Procharger. Pretty much a combination that could have been put together in 1995. Kind of a nostalgia piece...
I was pleased with the fuel milage of just under 22 MPG. I was not easy on it through the hills of Kentucky and the air was on most of the time.
Before we parted on Sunday morning, Greg had put together a set of questions on what we though may enhance the event for next year. This gives you some insight as to how important trying to find an avenue to bring people together is to him and the hard core group that was able to attend.
Look forward to getting a date set and in the book for next year!
Mark .

Yes, OTB is out of the box. Compression is 9:1 with a zero decked flat top Twisted Wedge piston (-3cc for valve reliefs). The heads are the old style with the O-ring cut in them.

Yep, 231 and then to a bunch of twisty two laners. Not being familiar with where I was going dampened my enthusiasm on hammering though curves, but I did pass a few people in kind of a dramatic fashion! A few hill crests could easily have resulted in going airborne with a little more speed. I'll bet people who know the area have a great time!
I must have been a bit ahead of you. The rain hit as I was going around Indy. It was one of those situations where the drivers around me were far more frightening than the weather. It was a pretty slow slog for over 100 miles, but got home OK with no issues.

Man! It sucks that I had to miss this!
We can all blame the State of Ohio for it. They had been messing up my unemployment checks for quite some time. Paying for weeks they shouldn't have been, and then not paying me to make it up and then not stopping to not pay me. I guess it was my fault for being honest and telling them about my surgery and inability to work.
At any rate, when it was time to leave for my bro's house in GA, I didn't have the funds to pay for gas to put in the Cougar down and back. I was planning on swinging by on my way back to Ohio. What really made me mad was that they finally got everything figured out on the Monday after the Saturday that we left and I could have brought the Cougar!
Buckeye State!! :(

Here are the graphs for two runs. One with the caps on, the other with the caps off. They're pretty similar, averaging about 8 points higher after 4,400 RPM.
Unfortunately the chart with the specific read outs is too big to download...

i demand a recount!
i got the car back together after a list of minor failures including the header, a power distribution problem that was shuttin down everything, and a blown water pump. now this car is a completely different animal to drive.
the boost is sooner, smoother, and will actually hold at 20psi thru a whole pull vs. wasting energy thru the header crack. the peak numbers might not be much higher, but i garaun-dang-tee the curves would be much more broad.
