Title: Vacuum Lines breaking
Post by: Whiteboy on March 03, 2010, 12:12:18 AM
Has anyone had trouble with the plastic piece of  that all the vacuum hoses fit into. My old one's A/C broke off after a while and now on the way home from work my brakes got really tough to push in, of course it was the same problem as last time. The little plastic piece that sits almost directly in front of the driver under the hood. ive had two break on me now and it sucks not having power brakes. :punchballs:

So the tab for the brake hose broke off? I'm sure a new one can be purchased at a parts store, even if its for a mustang, they all work on the same principle(your car is a 5.0, correct). If your ac line doesn't connect anymore, make sure to get a plug for it.

You have a pm too! lol

I had to splice the new vacuum lines they sell made of rubber or something onto the plastic ones, looks funny but it works and a cheap fix. That is if it did not break off at the end and into the fitting, that is another problem.

well there is a long cylindrical thing, then it has little plastic nozzle type things sticking out, and the rubber of the vacuum hoses slip onto those nozzles, well one of the nozzles snapped off of the main vacuum thing. so now i need to either find a 4 way conjunction piece for all the hoses to still be connecting or find a new cylindrical thing

OK fixed it! pretty much.... lol Super glue does wonders to plastic. anyways. I now have another issue that needs to be asked... I might need a new Heater Core. (yay) When the heater and air is off, smoke-like vapor comes out of the vents that smells like antifreeze, and when it gets on my windshield i cant see out of it. by the way it tastes like antifreeze. So its antifreeze vapor, coming out of my heater..... any helpfulness?

if your vac tree broke, and twice,,
i cant see any other reason it would do that unless your motor is tipping while under acceleration and a hose thats too short would be tugged on.

its called "banjo strung" when something has been cut too short and installed.  does it look like a line is too short?

if you can,, eyeball what crystal said she did several years ago.
she said she was able remove the glove box and make three cuts in the air box to act as a door to open up in order to reach in and extract the heater core.  she said she had duct taped the flap shut again after the new one went in.  Not sure who's tried this yet other than her, but it appeared to make the job really easy.

ok Ill look in to that. Yeah Its happened on both of my Tbirds. Same hose even It was the "S" plug-in that broke both times, without making that flap, is it a pain to get to the heater core?

I punched it too hard one night and I guess the tree couldn't hold it. Idk I'm stopping that. Ima start saving my need for speed for the strip... Someday. My sister sold her drag car.

How are your motor mounts? Are your vacuum lines long enough? My tree has ever had any issues and I drive the Sport like I stole it,and it's probably making a little more power than yours.Your engine will move a little, but not that much.

The plastic does dry out, could be mounts, specially if the tabs were bent on them and it lets the engine lift to high. That piece is some what centered that it shouldn't be an issue normally.

I'd put a longer vacuum line to the tree on the car and check out the condition of your motor mounts. The motor should move enough to break the vacuum tree.

Check your motor mounts. If they are original, one may be bad.generally the driver side first (on my cars anyway).

Ok I'll look into it I don't know much about the mounts but my dad does so I'll drag him out to take a look lol. He supports me as long As he doesn't have to help. (we're a chevy family and he raced a camaro at the local speedway for D.A.R.E.)

You make make a decent hardware store vacuum tree for way cheaper than that overpriced billet . Maybe $20 tops.

Replace all your vacuum lines. Theyre all old, the plastic hard lines are brittle and the rubber hoses are dry. Vacuum hose is cheap. Silicone hose can be had on ebay for decent prices. If you wanna get real fancy like I've thought of doing before you can bend hardlines out of brake line and couple it with rubber hose.
