Title: Heater core happy ending
Post by: savagefan on January 22, 2010, 09:44:55 AM
I would just like to say hi to all the members and owners of this site. I stumbled across it by accident when looking for info on my heater core. Thanx to the how-to posted here and the awesome pictures the job went very well even with the EATC and floor console. I have changed many heater cores over the years and this was without a doubt the toughest one by far. Your site made it much easier, again many thanx and I look forward to spending good times on here.

Welcome to the forum! I just had mine replaced but I had my mechanic do it. I'm not that brave.

What was the damage, if you don't mind saying. I'm curious to see what a mechanic thinks it's worth.

250-300 would be my guess from my experience approximately 4 hours @ 65/ hour plus mark up on the part its self.

It's not listed on the bill, I'm thinking they have it broken down by the job.

I cant complain, for quite a few years we did the barter system where I work off my bill and eventually build up a credit with them. We haven't done that for a couple of years now because he hired a guy that can be there all the time, well for those couple of years he was still doing work on my cars and never giving me a bill. So when I had the heater core done, he finally gave me a bill for it and for the last inspection I had done. I'm sure I owed him quite a bit for the work I've had done the last couple of years, so I got off easy.

Labor rates in NY are around $100 an hour now.....

OEM Ford heater cores are at a premium now as well.  Cheapest I've seen one recently was $95.....

Late Model Resto wants $124.99.

I think the last one I bought was around $30 and has a lifetime warranty.

Ford manufactured?

You can buy one of the Non-Ford ones for $30 from them.
FWIW -- my last one wasn't a Ford piece and is on year 6 so far....

I'm glad to hear that, mine isn't a Ford piece either and I think I paid the same for mine on ebay a couple of years ago, I had bought it and put it away until I needed it. A friend of mine told me it won't last if it's not from Ford. So I'm glad to see you've had good luck with yours.

My core retailed for $60 CAD but $35 with my discount for a genuine Ford part made in Mexico. Buggman look at your heater box area perhaps a vacuum line/cable/wires fell off during the job. You folks are posting some very nice pictures of your Foxies. Mines kinda ruff looking but runs like a top and has a lotta grunt.

There is a small plastic vacuum line by the fire wall where the A/C lines come in, it has a crack or broken. My son just did his heater core and the same thing happened. Those lines are 20+ yrs old and the work being done is so close it cracks or breaks them, just splice it with some small rubber hose and you are good to go.
