I've had my '88 Tbird Sport 5.0 for a year now, and my third new motor mount just broke. Are all the parts from the parts stores coming from China, or is my mechanic doing something wrong when he installs them ? I told him I don't mind paying a little extra for quality parts. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Ohhh, the humanity.
One of the mods here, ChuckW fabs motor mounts himself, and from what I have read here, they are a lot better than whats at the parts stores. Check out the vendor for sale section to see when he will make them again. Usually when enough interest generates for them, he will make a batch of them.

Coming from China has nothing to do with the mounts tearing. They could come out of the US and still fall apart. The stock design leave MUCH to be desired in the way of durability.
yep,buy chuck's mounts.
They stand up to my 500ponies and don't break a sweat, awesome job chuck.
I'll have the ChuckW mounts as soon as the funds are made.I have wanted some for wuite a while. Now it's crunch time.Spend the money on his,and be done with it.
Get Chuck's mounts and be done with it. I have a set and they are great. My original mounts wouldn't hold up to the stock 5.0's 155 hp...they are a piss poor design.
how is it broken exactly, torn, snapped?
there are other reasons than lousy quality for motor mounts to break.
you might want to look into that some before you go thru anymore.
but unfortunatlely to answer your question... yes, they all come from china now :toilet:
i wouldve rather pull used ones from the junkyard than the part store ones i bought.
On mine, the cushions tear apart usually. This time, the top metal bracket on the driver side split in half.I wish Chuck had a "buy now make payments" plan.LOL..
I dropped a set of regular mounts in when I did my motor in 2006.....Chuck didn't have a batch ready when I was ready. I picked up a set about 2 months later figuring I'd throw them in once the normal sstyle mounts gave way.......
The Chuck mounts are still in my garage wrapped up in their original packaging.
I know if I hadn't have ordered them that the stockers would have gave way in a month. :hick:
What's not to like about this.

I can't believe the mounts that I took off the motor. You can bend them with a big set of pliers.
been waiting a year to use these...... It's coming soon now. :D
now I want a set :( I will get them before he stops making them, I hope that doesnt come soon....
The new ones look even better powdercoated :D

Mine are still in the box as well, they'll go in with the 331 in a couple of months...
I have 10 years on a set of stockers, but I did rig a "motion limiter" so the rubber insulator only has to stretch maybe 1/8"...
Hum I am not a mechanic nor experienced in restoration, so that leads me to ask a question, my car jerks when I let of the gas and when I try to use the cruise at around 55 mph, I was suspecting a broken motor mount. Thank you for the picture I have an idea of what to look for I didn't know what to look for, could this be the reason for the jerking? Where would a motion limiter go?
Sounds like bad universal joints to me
I hadn't thought of universal joints, thank you I will have that checked.
i knew my mount was bad when everytime i stepped on the gas a little more than cruise and heard a clunk. popped the hood and noticed a chunk missing out of my battery and oily on the side of my oilpan(it didnt smell like motor oil).
pop the hood, get in the car and put it in drive and give it alittle gas. Do the same for reverse. If your engine seems to be moving alot your mounts are bad.
I just took the last one that broke out to look at it - looks fine from the outside, but my mechanic said it was def. broken. The car now makes the same noise it did last time it broke - makes a clunking noise when you come to a stop quickly.
Chuck's motor mounts look awesome - I hope he's making up more soon.
Same mount every time? Same side, rather?
How's the trans mount? Has the car ever been wrecked?
If it clunks when you stop...well, that sounds like something other than an engine mount. Usually they clunk and move when you get on the gas, or the trans shifts when you've got a good load on it.
X2 on Chuck's mounts, I have a set with the harder-durometer bushings...kinda nice when you start the engine, and you have a nice shake to go along with the sweet sweet bark of a 5.0, lol.
I may rip the clutch out of it, but I'm glad to know the engine is secure.
It's been the driver's side mount every time... car had been hit in the front before I bought it... I can tell because it had a new grille and the front bumper cover had been repainted - it looked like just a light tap, but maybe something got tweaked. Bought the car from the original owner- little old lady from Granada Hills (just north of Pasadena, seriously). I haven't taken a look at the trans mount.
The driver side is the torque side. That's the side that wants to "lift". I just swapped mine yesterday.Took about 30 minutes since I also pulled the header to make it easier, plus lifting the car.The engine sits up a little higher on the driver side, plus, the metal part of the mount that bolts to the engine was sheared apart.Mine is new now,but I'm still getting the ChuckW mounts as soon as funds are available. I'll be test driving the Sport shortly to see if there's a difference.
thunderincali, check your k member bolts. I had a clunk when stopping quickly and sometimes change gears from forward to reverse (prior to swapping to 5 speed). I lossened the bolt with an impact and ran the m back in. No clunk since.
I'm assuming everyone here is talking about V8 mounts. Does anyone make decent ones for the 3.8L? Both mine are shot. I baby the car as much as I can, but know I need to get them replaced. I've not looked at after market, so not sure what's even available.
Thx!
