I picked this up for 300 bucks about 20 minutes ago. It's an '86, 5.0 fuel injected, about 110,000 on the clock. It has a bad heater core and no power steering at the moment. It has very minimal rust, a little on the front quarter and on the trunklid, but I really really went over the frame and the rear quarters and the door jambs and every other place I could think of so I wouldn't get another rust bucket like my 'ol 20th. Better pics to come tomorrow, as it's raining at the moment, but here's one...
Congrats! Looks like a good find. And for the price, that's awsome!
I know it. I never come by deals like this. The interior is near perfect too. Has a little bubbling in the headliner, but the seats, and carpet look awesome for the age. The dash dosen't have a single crack in it either!
Thats cool, that makes it worth the price right there!
Just wait until you replace the heater core......lol.
Use petroleum jelly on the dash. I read that somewhere. ;)
Congrats Joe and you waited long enough for another Cougar friend. :D
Dan & Paula ;)
just a week ago i finally re-boxed up all those parts you sent and was cussin you man!!,,like how the hell did he fit all this in there.
Nice find for sure!!
just add a 1/4 turn cut off valve inline with the supply hose to the core for now,,or just hook the heat up to the AC core if your not planning on using much AC.
I know it, man you put up with a lot of complaining from me:D
I figured if I stuffed everything in there good enough it would make up for not using packing peanuts or foam :mullet:
As far as the heater core, I did read the thread about connecting to the ac, and I will probably go that route because I would rather not bypass it, and I don't want to tear my dash up either...
Do it the right way man, no need to screw it up right after you got it.
Well I don't have a lot of experience taken dashes out, nor do I have much patience.... I haven't yet checked to see if the ac is functional, but if it is, then I will most likely try to do it right.
Heater cores are pretty cheap and it may be a whole day of work but in the end it will be worth it.
I am glad you got into another Fox Cougar. Any plans yet? That car looks to be the same salmon color my parts Cougar was.
Congrats! I must admit I'm somewhat jealous as I have been keeping my eyes peeled for another 86 V8 Cougar myself.
The previous owner actually bought a new heater core, but he had no mechanical skills at all, and he left the part with me.
It was really just one of those right place at the right time deals. My brother was helping his friends uncle repair his roof, and saw the car next door and heard it was for sale. They originally wanted 600, but we got them down to 300. I waited over a year for this one man. But it was worth it.
if your not wanting to take chances damaging your dash. take it to a shop and let them have the fun, if they damage the dash its on them to fix it.
some times!
some will try to say, hey it a 23 year old car and it not like it new!
some times they say it was like that before it came in!
Take it to a good shop and they won't be as likely to screw you.
Good luck getting them to fix a 24 year old dash. Can't replace it and most can't do the plastic repairs.
Some more
A few more..
It needs a lot, but it is a good start for me. A lot better than what I had before, although the 20th will always be my favorite.
Thanks for your pics Joe and keep us informed with your progress friend. :D
I'm sure with a little TLC you'll have it straightened out in no time. It really looks to be in pretty good shape.
I think for what I paid I came out pretty good on it. It runs and shifts great. Got some mechanical issues to work out, it needs some motor mounts and new u-joints, valve cover gaskets and a good tune up. I'm trying not to get in a rush to get stuff done that way I don't half-ass anything. One thing at a time
Sounds like you got yourself a solid project! Welcome to the four eyed side of things!
Got a lot done on the car this weekend. Gave it some new plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, changed the tranny fluid and filter (and man was it bad, it looked like motor oil) and fixed an oil leak. My gauges and cluster are now fully functional. I also got some very nice taillights and put them in.
I went form the old and busted......
To shiny new(er) ones

Still a long ways away, but getting there. Especially with my tax money coming Friday, lots of parts to buy....
Looks like you have a really good project!
I remember a long time ago when I had my 85 Tbird I replaced the heater core without completely removing the dash out of the vehicle. I just loosened the dash at the five major attachment points and pull the dash away just enough to slip the heater box out. There may be a couple of other attachments that you may need to loosen.
I have gotten so good at removing Tbird dashes that I am not scared of anything!
Wanna come do mine?:mullet: I haven't mustered up the courage to do it yet, but that seems like the way to go, slipping it out just enough.
Love the 4-eyes. Hang onto those old tail lights, they like to work there way out even with glues. 86 is the best year for cougars, Especially with the 5.0.
