Title: k member interchangabity
Post by: mattg on December 30, 2009, 09:52:57 AM
i have 1986 cougar and wondering if a 1988 mustang k member will fit?  i have access to one in mint condition.    wondering if i should take it.  just to have around in case i ever need it down the road.

If it's free, why not?I haven't ever seen a K-Member go bad before, though. It will bolt on,but I'm unsure if you'd need to swap lower a-frames or not. Some of the Stang parts were the same as the Birds and Cougars for a while, then they changed it all up.

Not a direct swap.  Search around...it's been discussed umpteen times...

I thought that the K-Member was a bolt on.Well,I'm glad I'm keeping my '88 k-member under my '88 Bird.No worries with swapping.

I really did think that the Fox Stang crossmember would swap over.I may have been thinking about the different Fox Bird/Cougar k-members.At any rate,I was mistaken, and need to be confined to my house for a week with pay pending an investigation over my misleading information. My apologies are given in the meantime.

Aren't you confined anyway due to snow?

I don't know for fact but within the mid size foxes all will interchange but I'm not sure about the 87-88 k members.  I've heard they are diffenent.  The Mustang Ks are different in that a couple of the bolt holes will not align without rounding out the holes.  Plus I think the track is narrower which would require not using the Mustang contol arms on the bigger fox.  Other that that I'm totally ignorant on the matter.

This I do know.  There are basically two k members.
1 for 2.3, V6 and V8 and 1 for the I6.

The Tbird K-members are NOT the same as the Mustang ones...

There are minor differences in the mounting, which can be overcome if needed.

Motor mounts are totally different on the 86-88 TBird K-members.

ETC

ETC

Things that have been covered here quite a bit...

i was thinking that since fox mustang front control arms will work with a pre-1987 fox cougar / tbird,  that the k member might also work.    No point in me taking it if it isn't direct bolt in.    if i wanted a Kmember that required extra work to install i'd get this one:

it is a friend of a friend in the poconos who took apart his mustang to part out and has left the shell and k member.  PM me with your email or phone.    realize-  i'm not sure if he was looking to give it away in general.  or looking to sell it..... but offered to me cause my friend and I helped him fix his boiler (and he knows i am working on a fox body).    i will poke around and see what the deal is.  in any event, worst case,  i'm sure it's not too much $$  and i know it has no rust.
