So I received this stainless steel Craftsman rolling tool chest but read a single review online stating that Craftsman's SS top-box they had formed a fine film of surface rust/powder. Has anyone heard of this? If the stainless steel is that impure, it isn't really stainless and should get a different protective finish on it (read: return and exchange for a baked enamel unit).
From the majority of my research, this sounds like an isolated issue and likely just a bad batch that got sent to stores (hopefully on accident). What about this "grip latch" thing - there appear to be more people for it than against it but it's got that and Craftsmans' small-ish ball bearings. Opinions?
Please no "should have gotten this instead" stuff though - it was on clearance (they made way for a diamond plate version instead).
Haven't heard anything about their SS products, but as long as the drawers are ball-bearing, your pretty much good to go. I was unable to get the grip latch system at the time of purchase(Not enough money) but I sure would have liked to, it seemed like a very solid system. Mine is enamel green with ball bearings, and the standard latching system, which works OK, but not nearly as nice as the grip latch.
Those green ones are only on clearance now, according to their site. It isn't available anywhere but online shipping and a select couple at the Outlet stores.
Sounds about par for the course.
Stainless, depending on the corrosiveness of the environment to which it is exposed, can develop a discoloration or even a fine rust. I wouldn't be too worried. I quick wipe down once in a while with a stainless cleaner/protector like is sold for stainless appliance care should keep it looking good for years.
Merry Christmas!
