Title: Back from the body shop!
Post by: CoogarXR on December 12, 2009, 02:10:15 PM
Welp I got my XR-7 back from the body shop, and while the paint job isn't perfect, I think it's great!

It looks so much better than it did when it was 5 different colors :hick:

I took the mouldings and pinstripes off to save some money on the paint job, thinking I would put them back on... But now, seeing it without, kinda makes me want to leave them off... I'm still undecided.

Oh well, I have all winter to think about it. I am putting it in storage for the winter in the next few days.

Here's a couple pics!

The front end has a few things different; the TC hood, the headlight bezels are painted, and I have the foglights off (they're going back on, I just took them off for the paint).

That's my wife's 65 plymouth fury in the background, hehe.

That is very sharp.  I think the two tone black/grey looks outstanding.  What are your overall plans for the car?

I'm getting ready to strip the interior.  Need anything that's grey with the 85+ style?

Looks great :D

I'd stick the molding between the bumpers and wheels back on though. That way the molding on the bumpers flows back into the lines of the car and does not stick out so much.

Similar to this without the ugly wheels.

It came out great! Do you have some type of a spoiler added to the bumper? It looks good.

Look for an 87-88 Thunderbird turbocoupe in a junkyard or find someone with a hood from one for sale. It will bolt right up.

Be sure to grab the hinges too, just in case. It bolted right up to my 85, but when I had it on both of my 83s, the hinges didn't mate up to the holes in the hood (I had to use the TC hinges in that case). Plus the TC hinges are spring loaded so you won't need a prop rod.

Yes, this hood has been on 3 of my cougars now, heh. It will stay on this one for good though.

Can you send me a picture of this mechanism please (in PM)? I have '86 TC with prop rod.

Little progress report-

Just got the ol' black cat out of winter storage (I hope not too soon!)

I got the XR-7 emblems on, fog light brackets painted, brackets and fog lights installed (one is a little crooked in the pic, but it looked straight in person, hmm), and I even got in my shed dug out my 1990s stylin' GTS light covers!

Looks good! I've always used the GTS covers to, but I've always peeled the stickers off. I even pin striped one set.

Best looking set of 10 holes I've seen in a while.

just curious how did you mount your headlight cover to stay on? with small screws or double sided tape?

They come with L-brackets with double-sided tape that mount to the bezels. Then the covers have plastic connectors (like velcro, but stronger) that hold them to the brackets. It feels sturdy, but I get nervous that they'll fly off on the highway (even though it's never happened).

I think eventually I will put all the moldings back on. They just look so bad right now, chrome is shot, rubber is all weather beaten, etc. I really have to spend some time restoring them... But I will :)

I need to get my mudflaps on too, I might do that today.
