Title: What was your first car?
Post by: amooset on December 04, 2009, 09:57:03 PM
78 Caprice was mine.  It had a massive hole in the driver's side floorboard.  I blew the engine less than a year after I got it.  It had all the power options and everything worked.

My first car was a 1970 Mustang Mach1 with a 351C Ram Air.
Bought it wrecked, roof was down to the seats, all windows were busted out except for one rear quarter window. Paid $525 for the car and only cost me $300 to get it back on the road. My Dad, brother and I did the work.
Check out gas price in the pic, now I'm telling my age.

mine was a datsun pickup.  i was only 13 at the time.  my dad still tells a story about me doing doughnuts around him as he was cutting grass on the riding the lawnmower.  he says it like it scared him lol.  i wish i still had it, but i totaled it in the woods.  i just kept to our 1000ft driveway and a little bit of wood crawling.  it was a 5 speed so the first car i ever drove was 5spd.  it actually had a non removable hurst shifter and leaver.  it was sold off as s b/ci really destroyed the thing.  i then went to a golfcart that i drove every day. i had a carved out track after a couple months of running the golfcart around the same course over and over.  it was really smooth.  after that i had to drive my dad's elantra, more like share it.  i had 2 accidents and 1 ditch kill. when i turned 18 my gramps gave me his baby, the 87 thunderbird.  well he played around with all of the tuning screwed and had it where it wouldnt stay running idle.  it took me and my dad 2 weeks to get everything good.. i was determined to keep it and build something of it.  but SCREW LOANS.  ugh. the bird was the first i could drive on the street.  my first car i bought.  mx5, and loving every bit of it!!

My first titled driving car was a 1968 Torino GT that I got for my 16th birthday back in 1975. I turned 16 in September of that year, got my drivers license in October, and wrapped it around a telephone pole in November. :punchballs: On the plus side, I saved the bucket seats out of it and they are going into my 69 Torino GT next week. So, at least parts of it live on and, hopefully, will for a long time, this time. :headbang:

It was an '88 Town Car. I got it when I was 15, and I had it 4 years when I traded it towards a '93 Mustang convertible in 2003. Ever since then it's been sitting at the local Ford dealer. :hick:

1964 Impala Coupe with small V-8 (283).  One feature that I thought was special --was the Green Idiot light which was lit when you started the engine cold.  It would go out when the engine supposively reached operating temp.  The overall dash set up was nice.  Now I'm driving a 1989 Towncar like that pictured above and the T-Bird.  The towncar legroom reminds me of the Impala.  I have owned the Towncar since 1993.  Wish I could get one without rust.

86 cougar, lots of dents and lots of rust. Piece of garbage with next to no options. Didn't know what I had and wish I kept it. 5.0 with a/c that didn't work and digital dash. Manual everything and no power windows.

A 1955 Chevy 4 door.  Ugly Neptune green and white.  I bought it from some old guy who lived down the road from us.  Paid $50 for it and after some air in the tires, new plugs, points, battery and some fresh gas i drove it home.  6cyl 3 on the tree.  I never did get to drive the car legally.  I got it when i was 15 and sold it before i turned 16.  Looking back on it that was a pretty cool car...

My first car was a project my father and I built; a 1966 Chevelle convertible. We installed an LS-6 454 crate engine with a roller cam, a Muncie M-20 4-speed, and a 3.31:1 12-bolt posi rear. On a set of 10" M&H Racemaster slicks my best time was a 12.01.

Never wrecked it, never got a ticket in it, traded it back to my dad plus payments on a 1961 Impala 2dht into which I built and installed a bored and stroked 409 (to 482).

The LS-6 454 lives on however as the engine in my "Pro-Touring 442," a 1972 Olds "442" convertible I am building in the Pro-Touring style.

Shiny Side Up!
Bill

Mine was a 1979 Mustang Ghia. We transplanted a 351W into it, it was a C4 car and I enjoyed the hell out of it until I traded it for an 88 Cougar LS 5.0 Then I was hooked.

I had a 63' VW Beetle with a Porche engine case, 88mm cylinders, dual 2bl Webbers, lightweight flywheel, comp clutch, headers. At first I bought the thing for the body as it was mint but ended up keeping the engine/trans. I was 15 and only had a permit. A friend of my dads, a local cop, helped us to get it running right because we thought there was something really wrong with the engine, just wouldn't idle smoothly like a typical VW. I made a couple of phone calls to the guy who I bought it from and found out that it had been built by his son for drag racing. My dads friend took me out for a test ride and pulled the front wheels off the ground in 1st gear:burnout: and promptly told my dad not to let me drive it until I had my license for a long time. :( Thankfully he didn't listen to him much as I had been driving our hobby stock car. It took 6 months before I was allowed back behind the wheel to drive it, other than moving it around our yard. The best part was I only paid $300 for it.  Well that was a long time ago though

my first car i had was an 86 grand am. a rebuilt pos that in the 3 or 4 months i had it i drove exactly one block with it. me and my buddies would just hang in it doing whatever. eventually it was towed while i was at work. that was back when i was 15.
the first car i bought was years later, a 1980 grand prix sj, ttops power windows with a 60's 327 vette engine thrown in it. it had sat for some 8 years and was the guys street toy down at the races near the stadiums(or so i was told)and was supposed to be free but wrestled all of $50 from me for it. the oil was super black and thick as tar with a beat primered body but it started right up so i took it.
i really do miss the ttops untill one blew off on the highway, from not locking it back down, and nearly hit a tractor trailer before hitting the ground and shattering.
the only things that went wrong with the car was the stop light switch and the brake booster. ill probly get another one someday(in decent shape hopefully)

here is mine.
1961 Ford Falcon. Had a 302/C4 heat and a drivers seat. That was all! lol
Bought it for $900 fixed it up through high school, replaced all the interior, did the body work, amazingly it didnt have much rust at all!, sanded and got it ready for paint. I installed a 9 inch rear end, aluminum driveshaft, longtubes, and some dynomax lers. Drove it to graduation. Sold it a couple months later for $3400.

Here she is.

My first "offical" car was my T-bird.  I got it when I was 17 as a hand-me-down from my Dad.  I will never part with it.  This is about the oldest pic of it I could find.  I kinda miss how it looked with the 14's.

My parents made all us kids drive my grandparents old '81 Olds ninety-eight as a "learner" vehicle to prove ourselves on before they got us a nicer car.  It had the 403 pontiac engine and was quite the tire frier.

The first car I've ever drive was our Thunderbird. I was about 10 or 11 and it was on small airport. After that was loooong time and when I got my driving licence I used mum's Geo Metro and sometimes our Škoda Felicia (it was much better, than Metro). And after my father's death I came in for Thunderbird. Now it's my only car, but I'm still using Felicia, because Metro is sold and Ford is my toy for summer cruising :)

PS: It is very unusual here to have two american cars, but Metro was parody, not an american car. It was puppiesanese car with sealed beams and red tail lights.
PS2: Škoda Felicia is this.
It's still most frequent car in here although the last Felicia was made in year 2000.

My first car was a '78 Trans Am powered by a '70 LT1. WS6 suspension (disc brake rear). This car was a POS: Bondo quarter panels (3/4" thick), no carpets, no options, ripped up vinyl interior. Had the super rare 160MPH speedo (a guy offered to buy the whole car just for that speedo). Because it was an original 400 car and now had a SBC the shaker scoop was recessed about 4" into the hood when I bought it. I made up a riser for it so it came up through the hood as God intended.

A POS, but I loved that car and still miss it. I named it "Bertha" (the only car I'd ever named). It was silly fast, especially in a sea of Chevettes, Omnis, K-Cars and the other junk my high school buddies were stuck driving. It had the TH350 tranny and thanks to highway gearing it would do 55MPH in first gear, 90 in second, and I had it showing 140 in third, scaring myself silly in the process (the car felt like it weighed about two pounds at that speed).

This car was famous at the high school thanks to my habit of bringing a carlaod of buddies to the local abandoned shopping mall parking lot and doing donuts and pirouhettes every lunch hour. So famous it had its own photo in the school yearbook :hick:

Some day I will own another, but in good shape. Below is a pic, not of my car, but of one that looks exactly like Bertha did, right down to the steelies, spray bomb paint, and missing front chin spoiler. I eventually replaced the steelies with the polycast snowflakes...

It was ice blue metallic and the slowest car ever:hick:. I used to drive me and a friend to high school in it and the girls at the school next door (I went to an all boys Catholic high school and there was an all girls Catholic high school next door) used to call us the "blue van boys":rollin:

Figured I would throw up some pictures.
My 86 cat. Origonally had manuel everything and no passenger side mirror. I broke the lock inside the door and went to the junkyard to buy a lock, and they wanted the same for the lock and door panel as they did for the whole door, so I ended up just throwing a new door on.

Some of you guys have had some really neat stuff!  I like hearing the stories.

My First Car:
1978 Oldsmobile 98 Regency 2 door with the Olds 350 (gas -- not diesel)

The only difference appearance-wise between mine and the one below was that I had a light blue interior and Landau top....

Paid $800 for it in High School.  Bought it knowing it needed a cam (wiped intake lobe) and radiator (had a slow leak).  Swapped in a cam and new lifters with just a wee bit more grunt and a radiator for a Caddy Coupe DeVille with the 500 C.I. motor.  Fattest radiator EVAR and I got it NEW for $40.

They came with 750 CFM carbs.  Considering engine output was rated @ 170 HP in stock trim and the redline was 5000 RPM's, looking in hindsight it was a bit much....8 MPG!!!!  Leaded fuel at that!!  In 1993 there were only a handful of gas stations left around by me that had leaded gas.

I drove it for about 3 months and it was trouble free.  Coming down a road I knew well the dreaded oil light came on one day.  I had checked the oil less than a week before and the level was full.  Luckily I was within walking distance of a parts store because somehow in that time period more than 3 quarts had managed to find their way out of the crankcase and oil pan and apparently disappear.  I never noticed any leaks, drips, odd smell, or smoke....That's not to say there weren't any....I was 17.....

That was the death knell for the car; the Olds developed a horrendous rod knock.  My parents had just bought a brand new 1994 Toyota Camry and only needed one car.  They decided that an under 50K 1987 Cougar LS 3.8 was most likely MUCH more reliable than a 1978 Olds.....especially considering that the history of the Cougar was well documented and known.

The Olds sat in the driveway for two months as I developed a budding relationship with the Fox body Cougar that eventually made me seek out the one I own today.  I finally conceded and called the local salvage yard to haul the old girl away.  They gave me $50 for her.

I still miss that car....

I put a new oil pressure gauge in it one day after school, and didn't get the line routed just right. Burnt a hole in it, lost enough oil that it started knocking. Rebuilt the 360 in my auto class, and when I quit driving it in 1998 it still ran strong as a tank.

I buried it several times up the bottom of the frame, and even had it on fire twice.

My first car proper was my '87 Escort GT. I lost my license in that car because I was stupid, rebellious and had a heavy right foot.

I still have it, as well as the Jeep (both jeeps...keep reading) and plan to fix it up sometime...

What I learned to drive in was an '81 CJ-7. This beast has the 304, 4 speed, and 33" tires. I had a lot of fun, did a lot of dumb shiznit with it, mudded all over the county with it, and ended up laying it on it's side on a gravel road less than a mile from my home. To say that I ended up better off than the Jeep is a lie...I had a bad cut on my head, and my passengers had broken and cracked ribs.

I'll not mention the 3 K-car station wagons and the one sedan that my ex-wife and I suffered through.

This was my first van. Totally rebuilt the entire lower half of it when I was 19.
1975 E-100 W/351 W

Boy was there a lot of welding on that one. Made my Cougar look like a weekend project.

Oldest pic I can find. Got it when I was 15, sat in the driveway (except for my joyrides) til I was 16. This was right after i swapped the Ponies in place of the TRX.

Mine was a 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic.

I had to dump oil into it every other day because it had a leak. You could hear the valves tapping constantly. But I drove it for several months before my (ex husband) who drove it too hard, blew the engine... well actually it went while I was driving, but it was his fault. He also had a couple accidents in it so it was dented up..... I should have never let him drive that car. lol

That olds you had is actually pretty sweet.  The big 4-dr Maroon one we had was a really nice riding car.  It just kind of floated down the road.  The interior was like sitting on a sofa while driving.  Big velour seats and woodgrain trim everywhere.  I could pack a bunch of my friends in there when going out on the town.

My parents sold ours to one of my High School friends when a valve starting making noise (it had originally had a diesel and when it blew my grandad installed an Olds 403).  My buddy drove it all over Indiana and it eventually let go running about 80-90 mph on 465 in Indy.  He eventually dropped a 350 rocket out of a 71 Olds into it and it ran good, but by then it was beat up pretty bad.  Last I knew it was sitting in his parents yard.  I'm sure it has been turned into a demo derby car and has died a horrible death by now!  Makes me wish I would have kept it.  There is a guy around here who has one all painted up with 18's and tinted windows...it would be a sweet cruiser.

my first car is my 66 mustang
but my FIRST BOUGHT car was my 1988 lincoln, and my FIRST LEGAL car was my 1990 lincoln.
I have never bought a car with anything smaller then a 302 v8:) Doing my part to save cars from C4C, and with illegal exhausts to disturb the peace, and burn all the gas them hybrids save! I plan to drive only my v8's till I cant afford them as a DD anymore then buy a 4 banger.

My first ride was an 87 Buick electra.  Had about 300K on the clock and one day, after I'd owned it a couple of months, it just quit running.  The engine just stopped, steamed a little and never lived again, the shop I took it to told me I had cracked the block, but it didn't make any noise and would crank over just fine.  Looking back I don't think that motor was blown, but I would have never fallen in love with the 5.0 if it hadn't.  A couple of days later I bought an 89 grand marquis then a year or so after that my cougar.

Mine was a 78 Buick Regal, I drove it for a month and the cam and valve guides went. It only had 54,000 miles so it was rebuilt and driven a couple more years before I totaled it. It wasn't really totaled but I really screwed up the front end. Then I bought a beat 79 Mustang GHIA, ran it for a while and put another front end on the Regal and drove it until it threw a rod through the oil pan. Had a couple new cars that didn't work out then went back to my Mustang until I traded it off for my Bird'

Mine was a $300 '73 LTD that someone transplanted a 410 into. That car was fast as hell, at least first car fast. I ended up beating it half to death then a guy I knew bought it and promptly yanked the engine for his truck.

X

Wow, Ron! That thing was sweet! You guys did a great job fixing it. It sure would be nice to see gas prices like that again! Not that it'll ever happen but we can dream.

My first vehicle was a 79 Chevy Luv 4x4. My dad let me have it when I was 12, shortly after this pic. Pic linked because of pic with me and my first elk's head. Don't click if that sort of stuff offends you:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/187sks/Old_School/1992-11-Andy1stElk-0005.jpg (http://"http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/187sks/Old_School/1992-11-Andy1stElk-0005.jpg")

First vehicle I bought with my own money was a 1978 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with a modded '67 Corvette 327 under the hood making 450+hp. I bought it for $1800 in 1997. It had more than $10k worth of engine and transmission work receipts that came with it. Unfortunately I have no pictures of it.

I think I have told this story before, but it's appropriate to re-tell it in this thread.

I was given my dad's 84 Cougar XR-7 when I was 15. It ran pretty rough. It ran so bad... (crowd says "how bad was it?") so bad that you had to get running starts at hills. It ran so bad, I timed 0-60 at 18 seconds!

But for some reason I loved it. It was so comfortable. It just fit me. I didn't know anyhting about cars, so I bought a haynes manual and traced my problems to bad fuel injectors and pressure regulator. I got a job and saved up for parts. I tore into it and replaced the injectors and pressure regulator. It ran really well then! I also replaced the turbo since the bearings were going out on mine. It ran awesome then! My dad and I sanded and painted it together. It turned out pretty good.

But all my friends had V8s and I had no idea how rare an 84 XR-7 was (this was way back before Al Gore invented the internet). I saw an 87 XR-7 at a local car lot with the 5.0. It fit me nice too, and had the V8, so I traded my 84 in for a lousy $800.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the 87 too, but I missed the 84 somethin' fierce. I noticed one day that my old car was sitting behind the car lot where I traded it in. I stopped to ask him what was up. He said the motor sucked a valve, and that I could buy the car back for $300 if I wanted it. Well, I still lived at home, and had to ask permission from the 'folks. By the time I went back, it was gone. He said a mechanic up the street bought it. On my way home, I saw it up on a lift in a garage. I thought, "oh well, at least somebody will be driving it again"...

One day later the garage burned down with my car still up on the lift. I saw it when I drove by again. Poor thing...

Here's some pics of it back then. Notice the slayer bumper sticker, hehe, I was a mullet-wearing headbanger :mullet:

^ Its my avatar.  Bought in Jan 91 after I got out of school.  It took a long time to find an 88 xr7, since they weren't made any more.  I had looked since fall of the previous year.  What a beaut...

Now I think about it. I had a 76 Dodge Aspen as a hand me down for 2-3 months before my Monarch. It rusted out faster then I could patch it. lol

my first was my '85 Cougar.  was a 3.8L that I convetered to a 255 V8, then a stock 302 out of a crown vic, then I swapped in a stock 302 that I converted to carb from an '88XR-7.  went through 7 transmissions, and 3, 7.5" diffs before I finally put an 8.8" in.

Man did I ever do a lot of hideous "mods" to that thing....  looking back at the pics now I shake my head and laugh....  this is the only pic I even like of it...
