Title: Junkyard Seats question
Post by: bq93 on April 19, 2005, 03:27:05 PM
Ok I was shopping in the wrecking yard to day ( yes, I was looking for a trip minder and a compass/Temp console that might work in a sun roof car) and I came across a couple decent pairs of seats.

First my primary question is about the comfort of the ~’85 Mustang seats with the halo head rests.  How do these compare to the TC seats?  Seems hard to beat for $40.

Second question – I came across a pair of Recaro seas in a wrecked police Lumina.  Problems were:

a.   They didn’t look too comfortable
b.   They don’t seem to tilt forward.  They have a wheel you have to turn and my wrist started to hurt just thinking about it.

Were these Recaro seats Chevy got through some deal with Recaro or something?  The seats were cloth, but the rear seat was leather?

The Mustang Sport seats are the same seats as the Tbird Sport seats.

Those Recaros were probably some of the "service" issue seats that have room around the bolsters and such for the police "gear".

If they were in a 4-door car, they most likely don't tilt, and the recline adjuster  is MUCH better than a lever.  I have 3 sets of used Recaro SE's...all have that ...the "infinte" adjustment is much better IMO

The rear would've been vinyl, actually - easier to clean up after a drunk. Ford cop cars are the same way - cloth front, vinyl rear. The police Recaro's are supposedly ergonomically correct, but I've never spent a great deal of time in them so I wouldn't know

I'm gussing you're right.  They were pretty narrow actually.  Would they be worth $50 (blue - I'd have to dye them black)

THat is unless you have 4, 5, and 6 year old boys who are CONSTANTLY needing in the back seat.  :toilet:

Those seats are designed w/o the flip lever on purpose.  The "normal" seats usually have the lever as well as the recline adjuster.  All mine do.

Have you sat in these service issue seats?  Would they be worth looking at?  They would probably cost me $40-$50.  They are clean as can be.

I mean $50 for Recaro seats is $50, right?  I've never riden in any of these seats so I have no idea.

Thanks for the advice.

Mike check.

Check, check...is this thing on?

Has anyone actually ridden in the Recaro service issue seats in the police Luminas.

Waste of time?

Worth the $40-$50?

Better or worst than the 85 mustang seats with the halo headrests?

I have not sat in them, but they have no side bolstering to speak of.......might be comfy...but not very supportive for "spirited" driving...

Well it's a tough call. I could have either set, but I just don't know which to go with.  BIgger problem is that I can't really sit in the Recaros since the front of the car is balanced on some stacked rims.

Decisions, decisions.

Get 'em, and if you don't like 'em, sell 'em at double the price to a Chev boy for his Lumina

Hmmm.. 3 sets of used Recaro SEs??  Hmmm... would you be willing to part with a pair?

And By the way, if the Lumina seats are the recaros that seem wider, dont even bother. They are the most uncomfertable seats i have sat in.  My company has a Police Impala with all the Tpuppiess, and the Recaro seats in those absolutely blow. Good for short trips, but horrible for long distance

THey actually seem fairly narrow.  I'm thinking about picking them up and if I don't like them, I can eBay 'em. :hick:

Hehe... nope sorry.  :hick: They are all actually spoken for.  They all need refurbished (except for maybe one set....but they're tan...ick).  One set if for the 83 Tbird, one for the 84 XR-7 and the other is staying in the 80 XR-7 (or staying w/ me if I decide to get rid of it).

Keep an eye on ebay.  Also some VWs used them as well...some nice ones too.  Some of the late 80's Sciroccos and GTI/GLI 16Vs had some nice seats with the BIG bolsters on them.
