Title: 84 vs 86 computer and wiring.
Post by: croga001 on December 02, 2009, 04:13:15 PM
i have a motor and trans out of my 86 that i want to put into the 84 t/c both cars were 2.3.  so what i need to know is do i need to swap over the computer and wiring, or did the 84 and 86's share the same computer and harness?  the 84 still has the computer and harness in it so i'd rather not go through the hassle if i dont need to.
thanks
dan

Looking at the two EVTMs, there are some differences. I don't know how important they are.
The 86 has a "boost control solenoid" controlled by EEC pin 32.
The 84 has one wire from the EEC pin 10 to the fan control module.
The 86 has two wires from the EEC pins 10 & 54 to the fan control module.

The '86 likely has better programming for driveability... Possibly a faster running processor...

Plus IF it has the brown top injectors, you should defiantly use the '86 components as it used a larger VAM and injectors than the earlier engines

86 should be big injectors(brown top) small VAM
84 should be small injectors(green top) small VAM

you dont need to swap the entire harness, but i would run the 86 computer if you have it and repinn as needed(which i dont think there is any need to).
if you dont have the 86 computer, you can swap green top injectors onto the 86 motor and run the 84 computer already in the car.

ok cool.  i will have the newrer computer.  but i wanted to make sure all the sensors and plugs matched up.  if i can get the motor runnin with the computer in the car i will go that route for the time being.  all the old stuff was left in there.
thanks
