after 6 months of neutral dropping my aod, TRYING to grenade it. it finally happened.....4000rpm (usually did it at 6k and all it would do was spin) and traction is what it took. launched hard enough to trip the inertia switch.
time for the c4 swap
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q285/the_leander/Third-party-facepalm.jpg)
Why would you admit that? So lets get this straight you decided instead of pulling the transmission and selling a good working transmission you'd destroy it and make an unsellable 100Lb paperweight. Yeah, makes perfect sense.
Agreed, you have to take it out anyway to do the swap, someone on the board probably would have given you money for a working aod.
Not knowing whose it was...
I never will understand the hate for AOD's. With a few simple mods, you can make them REALLY sturdy AND have the benefit of overdrive.
I like my AOD....
why tear something up that worked good?
Yeah, that wasn't very smart. Working trans worth $$, Not working trans not worth $$. :hick:
I will admit someday I REALLY want to buy a junk car and do that a few times. I don't know why, I just wanna neutral drop something. Just a couple times. :hick:
My friend has had his '89 Beretta GT with the 2.8 since high school, and in THOSE couple of years it endured hundreds upon hundreds of 5 grand drops. The CV axle on the one side is now quite beat :rollin: but....the fluid is still cherry red, and it works like its new. He has a vette now so its the daily/winter vehicle and he is careful because now he doesnt have the money to replace major things on it (cough vette cough) but it shows no despise for that past treatment. How this is possible I've no idea...
Oh and...technically he *could* sell it, to a very specific buyer. "Good empty AOD case for someone building a tranny"
I guess we should have bought POS FWD GM cars. My buddy did the same thing in his 91 Skylark, E brake 180s and then neutral drops to pull out of it. Now he has a 05 GTO (HIS $, no mommy and daddy on either car). THats the key, buy a POS FWD GM car and then you can buy a fast POS GM :rollin:
Its your money, your car, whatever.
I see most things in life as money so I try not to waste things like this but thats just me. Something is only worth money if your going to sell it.
Don't let me forget to never buy a transmission from ya! :hick:
I mean, your car, your transmission, your money to replace/fix/whatever, but still wasteful. :flame:
The money from selling that AOD mighta paid for a good performance rebuild of the little c4 though.
BTW, if you did that shiznit for 6 months..how's the u-joints?
last time i checked the u joints they were perfect.
it had already lost OD and was slipping terribly in 1-2-D.
and for the record, the "weak" 7.5 held just fine during all of this
hehehe... for now.... Mine lasted about 150 neutral drops with the 3.8L/c5 in front, but once I had the 5.0L/aod in it, I ate 3 7.5 diffs without tranny drops.
It just takes me a few hours to rebuild an aod with a shift kit. I would have kept it too.
I'm putting an AOD in my ranchero cuz I'm sick of not having OD when I go on long trips, no hatred for em here. I beat mine up pretty good by accident a few times and never had a problem, just wanted the 5 speed.
As for the 7.5's no hatred for those either. 265k and counting and mine stil goes no problem. Ask anyone who knows me, I don't beat on my cars but I don't baby them by any means...
i beat the ever living hell out of my car and am not ashamed to admit it. i bought my t-bird to be abused daily...
as for OD, i'm thinking about just swapping the 260/c4 into the bird to make it driveable while i finish the stang and making the stang my new DD with a FI 302 and a t5 or MAYBE built AOD
I had a friend in high school who beat on his car like it sounds like you do. We all thought he was and idiot because he was destroying cars with his constant beatings. Keep it up and the trans being destroyed wont be your only prob.
I quit beating on my cars when I started to go through motor mounts. I've also blown transmissions and rear ends; I'm feeling like those days are behind me now.
I broke my AOD because I didn't do any up-grades to it after the GT40 5.0 went in. It died not from neutral drops or beating on it (I baby the car on the street) but from drag racing at the track. It still works but anything more than 1/2 throttle in 1st or 2nd gear and it slips like crazy. If I had just put some sort of shift kit in and a cooler the AOD would probably still be ok.
i have a little thing i live by "when it breaks, upgrade"
trans broke, i'm going c4 for now, TKO when that goes if money allows, if not another c4. rearend breaks, i'm going stang 8.8 with 4.10's and 5 lug. engine goes, i'm going 351w or 460. this car is NOT my only vehicle, i have a daily, the t-bird and mustang are simply play toys
If your engine bay wasnt so friggin' clean I'd bust your balls for not puttin a kit in it. :rollin: :beatyoass:
I thought you said you were upgrading? the C4 is a downgrade from an AOD.
I was thinking the same thing.
Must be nice to be able to blow money like that though...
(Although I'll never go this far)
No hate for the AOD here. I think the biggest problem with them is that most people use the WRONG tranny fluid for one, and improper TV cable setting. Im laying down 280RWHP & 307 RWTQ in my 93 stang LX with an AOD. Keep in mind this is a naturally aspirated car with a very mild 306 (f-303 cam, flat top with valve relief hyper pistons, Edelbrok 5.0 heads 202/160 valves, 1.7 crane race gold RR's, cobra intake and a bigger MAF and T-body) These are not particularly stellar numbers by far but for basically a bolt on engine im pretty happy with the 280 HP with the AOD. Not to mention i can cruise the highway in the car and still get 20 MPG or so.
Just my .02
THISAnd FWIW -- Take the spider gears out of the equation when it comes to the 7.5 (read: install a locker) and they hold up VERY well....
:rollin:
Wrong fluid, ya gotta be kidding... My AOD ain't seen anything but "F" for the last 10 years(Oct '99) and it has about 750-800 drag strip passes, a few with nitrous(I do change it every spring though)... Yeah it's getting a bit tired, but with the Trans-Go shift kit still is far firmer than any stock AOD...
how is a c4 a downgrade? for what i do with the car, it's perfect. this car is not a cruiser, it's a weekend play toy, i have no use for OD
lower first gear, get off the line a little quicker. stouter built, stock for stock. cheaper to build.
Yeah the C4 has a 2.46 1st ratio and the the AOD a 2.40, big difference...
Main advantage of a C4 is it's a bit lighter...
Maybe I should have spent money on the AOD instead of stuff to clean the engine bay every other week:rollin:
I just changed my trans fluid yesterday. Stuck with the Dex/Merc. Only holds 11 quarts with the new converter -- even with the cooler. Changed it out about a year and a half ago. It got sooty rather quickly. The filter had surface rust on it too.
VERY glad I changed it....
How the hell was the filter rusty??? You think you had moisture in your fluid or something?
+1.
I changed the fluid in my AOD this year for the first time in 4 years and the filter wasn't rusty. I drive the car maybe 1,000 miles a year if that much.
I haven't a clue. Perhaps from sitting so long with things apart this past spring....
That had to do it. If the trans is closed up no moisture should get in.
The type f is great if changed regularly. I was more referring to using the wrong dex/merc usually in combination with improperly set TV/not upgrading the TV retainer on the TB.
Wow... C4 and 3.73's. What's that 3500 rpms at 60? My car irritates me with 4.10's and an AOD, can't imagine no OD, but if you don't cruise at long distances then I guess it's not bad.
With 3.73s, P225/55/16 tires, and an AOD I *think* I'm turning about 2800 rpms at 70 mph. I *think* because I forget;)
Wow all this auto trans talk has got my head spinning. Gues I got to relearn all this stuff, due to both mark vii's having auto's. Makes me want to go give the old AODs a little pep talk!
You should definitely be at more like 80 with 2800 rpms. Now...of course it's tough because with our digi-dashes it could be +/- 200 rpms off what you actually think it is. :hick: But I do know its at that fourth bar and not jumping either direction at 80. Not too bad 3.73s with the OD is still decent for the highway.
3.45'swith a 27" tall tire here. 70 MPH is right around 2000 RPM. 3.73's would make it about 2200.....
80 should be around 2500 with 3.73's....... This is assuming a full lockup converter and the same 27 inch tall tires of course.
With 255/55-16's and 3.73's you should turn around 2600 @ 80 and 2300 @ 70....
That sounds more correct. Give me a break I have't driven the car in 6 weeks:hick:
I dont know how it was up there today but down here it was a cruising day. I bet your stored for winter already though.
I think Ima pull my car out of the garage and set it on fire.:flame:
I mean Im "upgrading" everything anyways.....
www.clickclickracing.com (http://"http://www.clickclickracing.com") Dude find a time when you're bored got like an hour and change or more to kill, and go to the AOD tech forum, dont even have to join just start reading old threads searching....I learned so much there, pretty awesome. You will get a real feel for how the things work! Great site.
Where can we read up on the proper way to set the tv cable. I think mine might be a little off, it doesn't seem to shift into over drive when it should, sometimes its delayed...
IMO this link should be in a thread as a sticky lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L3hNzxdiYw
Yeah I put it away for the winter the last week of October so it won't be out of the garage till April....
I like having the extra pressure. I have mine set so it'll downshift from 3rd into 1st if I snap the throttle @ 35 MPH.....
Oh absolutely...just saying for people that want it STOCK that's pretty much the best source I can find. Good camera work, the parts are clear etc.
I have mine adjusted all the way out :rollin: actually, before doing that, my kit didn't really seem to make any difference. I had it set where it is now, and just that and 3.73s was making it chirp 2nd occassionally. I put it back to stock with the kit, thinking too much would...blow the thing up or something, and it turned out the stock setting pretty much negates the kit I guess.
I notice the same thing though, the first time it freaked me out, actually hit 2nd REAL quick then skipped right by it and hit 1st and just went nuts lol. People can say what they want about autos I have so much fun with this car solely because of the way the tranny is set up...
