Title: Thinking about picking up an '82 and did (now with pics)
Post by: amooset on November 03, 2009, 03:34:18 AM
I know a guy who's selling an 82 tbird on the cheap.  He bought it from an old lady who almost never drove it.

The Good:
It has well under 100K (50-something?) on it and little to no rust.  The carb has been rebuilt

The Bad:
Needs a radiator but I have a spare one I can install.  The exhaust needs replaced.  It has the 255 boat-anchor engine.

I know the 255 is an underpowered pile of , but how is the reliability?  I can deal with slow, but not with persistent breakdowns.  It has the potential to either be a bone stock show car or a nice sleeper if I ever have the means to build it up.  I am just looking for opinions.  What do you guys think about the ugly and slow  child of the thunderbirds?

the 255 crank is a lighter weight 302 crank, Lots of guys run them as a cheap light bottom end with high RPM's. The block will go before the crank will from what I have read.

I don't think the 255 has any unusual reliability issues, but it's a dog for sure.

115hp and 194tq. :hick:

Hmm... So 300 bucks would be a good price to pay?

I don't think that sounds to bad.

I never realized you lived so close to me. You're about 2 hrs away.

For 300, I'd buy it...course, I'd drop in an HO, T5, and call it done lol

I say go for it...but I always did like the First Fox Birds....

it runs and drives its worth it. worst case scenario it blows up on you when your dirt broke and wind up having to junk it or sell the shell for almost what you paid for it. if it aint your daily driver and just a funbox then you cant lose as i see it.
its getting pretty hard to find cheap stuff that runs anymore from any time period.
search around over at FEP about your 255ci. v8 questions.

As it turned out it has 95K, not 59K.  For some reason I reversed the numbers in my head.  Oh well, still pretty low mileage for a car older than I am.  It idles smoothly, but does hesitate significantly on heavier acceleration.  More work to do, as expected.  Here are a couple of pictures.  It was kind of dark and not too much room in the washbay so this is the best I could get for now.

That does look like an old lady's car, but in a very cool way. I don't care for the colors, I don't care for the style and I don't care for the motor. Put it all together and I love it! Like Lou said, nice score, congrats!!

How do you visually tell the 255 from the 302?

I used to have a cream colored 81 Cougar XR7, btw it was a slow turd and had been through a tremendous hail storm.  It was my first car.

Got it in 88' for $1500 with 60K miles on it.  Man, it had gigantic taillights, way oversized for the style of the car.

I had a 255 in my '80.  Definitely a no power engine (though not sure my 3.8 in the Cougar is much better!).  Has the plastic coated timing chain teeth (if original), so I'd probably check into that and get that replaced right away befor it breaks and jumps time on you (ask me how I know).  When we pulled mine to do a rebuild, the block showed considerable wear from the pistons abrading the block wall...there was actually a VERY evident "lip" at the top of each cylinder mostly on the outer side of the block.  My car started out as a "little old lady" driver as well...can't vouch for the 1st 70K miles engine care, but I always changed oil every 2000-2500 miles.  Mine also had a LOT of blow-by.  It was enough that I ended up running a breather "downpipe" along the firewall to vent all the vapors out...PCV could not keep up.

In all, I rather like the looks of the car, and it REALLY looks MUCH improved if you put a decent set of rims on it with less backspacing...those fender flares can cover a decent size tire...gives it a MUCH improved "stance" and less grandma look!  :)

Your's body looks good, and for $300, I'd still say it's worth it!

Here's my '80. It's the second '80 that I've owned, my 5th Tbird and 7th Fox body. It has the 255/c4 but this winter I'm dropping in the 5.0 from my old mustang and the aod from a 90 crown vic. The vics aod has a soft shift going into overdrive so I'm going to rebuild it with a hardened input shaft, kevlar discs, wide ratio planetary, A- type overdrive servo and a shift kit. Let the good times roll.

They are rims. Those are the TRX wheels that were put on the silver anniversary cars. I have another set of TRX's that came with the car that have the correct Michelin white walls that were on it from new but they stay in storage unless I take it to a show as they are big $$

Haha, from the pictures I've seen of everyone else's box bird, I'm convinced that mine got the WORST color scheme.  I will probably get the paint redone once I finish making a decision on how to power it.

Ditto on the fuel sending unit.  My gauge works, then it doesn't, then it does.  After half a tank, it fails completely.

LOVE that Anniv, Dan!  Only one I've even seen in person was at a junk yard many years ago (long since crushed).  Yours looks to be in great shape!  Is that the factory option CB radio?  You've got one of the "high end" factory stereo's, too, right?  Per my owner's manual, I believe one could order a radio with an 8-track, IIRC.  =)  I picked up an original 1980 Thunderbird dealer brochure off eBay a while ago, let me know if you'd like a PDF copy of it.

FWIW, mine used to be 2-tone with a dark brown metallic bottom and a tanish-copper top (and landau vinyl).  Official Ford colors were chamois metallic and dark chamois metallic.

Thanks, the car is in very good shape, matter of fact it is all original. Paint is a bit thin in a few spots but I am hesitant to do anything to the car. The CB is factory. This car also has a factory moonroof which seems to be pretty rare on the Anniversary cars. As far as I can tell it has everything but the leather seats. Thanks for the offer on the brochure but the guy I got the car from had one from the original owner I even got lucky and got the original warranty card, the factory tag on the cb, the 1980 how to use your car tape, the manuals, and even the sleeve that goes on the visor to tell how to start the car and program the visor for your garage door. As far as seeing one they are few and far between I think there were only 1600+/- when they were new.

As far as the original poster saying he doesnt like the color of his car, I actually do. There is one in my small town here that is the same colors that I would like to get but the guy wants to much(so I shall wait). When I was in college in the late 80's I had a 59 Bird that was the same yellowish color so I guess that is where I started to like that color

I remember liking that color combo back when the cars were new. I wouldn't change it. These cars certainly stand out and look interesting to me despite they were not universally loved when they were new.

Digital dash here. My gas gauge has never lit up since ive owned the car. Replaced the sending unit and still no light. Speedo works fine. Not sure if a cluster from a different year would work. I roll with a gallon of gas in the trunk, and I've had to use it a number of times lol.

What do you mean "No light"? Have you pulled the cluster and checked the bulb?

The gas guage is digital like the speedo display, so the lcd gas guage dont light up at all. Pulled the cluster, all wires and bulbs are intact.

I have a digital guage as well which has intermitent bouts where it flashes repeatedly which I believe to be a open circuit between the printed circuit sender and a ground. I dont drive it enough at this point to tear into it but one of these days I will.

I have the 1980 EVTM and the Factory shop manual if any of you guys want some pics or diagrams to try and solve your problems

Wow, page 5?  Didn't know the box birds had this kind of following.  Here are a few shots of the interior.  The carpet is in pretty bad shape, but overall the upholstery is in great condition.  There are a few cracks hidden away on the aging plastic trim, but you'd really have to look to find them.

Oh yeah you could get a base model and not have the vinyl roof. As trends were then it was the thing to have the vinyl.

The 1983 dashboards were made over 1980-82 dashes. A new top pad, vinyl knee pads and revised trim across the face and center stack were applied to the original 1980 dash base. However, the mold of the dash base itself was revised to accommodate a new vinyl knee pad and glovebox door.

The 1980-82 dash was carried over virtually intact for the 1983-86 Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis.

took a few new pics of the Tbird today

I love it! Natural years of wear and all!

Today I went to Pull-A-Part and discovered they added a mustardy gold 1980 Tbird Town Landau which was loaded to the hilt including a sunroof. I felt so sorry for it because it was pretty much all in one piece.

Great looking car!

Thanks!  I considered removing the vinyl top, but opted to just dye it since it was in nice shape, and I didn't know what mess I'd be dealing with underneath (trim rivits/holes, etc.)

Nothing wrong with keeping the original vinyl top. It is at least clean looking. At least you were not stuck with that heavy Town Landau style.  Heavily padded 1970-80's vinyl roofs always did make me vomit. However, I did like the thinly padded 1977-79 Thunderbird's split vinyl roof treatment with the basket handle roof bisecting it... Ditto for the 1978-83 Futura Coupe. I also didn't mind some of the early 70's Fords that had the front 3/4 vinyl roof. But ultimately for me, the plain steel roof cars look the best, but I would not turn down a good vinyl roofed Boxbird.

Great new shots! I am in absolute lust over your car! I'd like to see the interior if you wouldn't mind sharing some interior shots with us.

It doesn't look like it will take much to get Casper in top shape. It even has the rare carriage roof option...

Resurrecting an old thread, I know, but what product did you use to dye the top?  I am planning on repainting it to follow your color scheme, actually.  The stock paint isn't in great shape and I think these cars look good in black.
