Near the end, I was the only one ever in there for more than five minutes at a time.
Maybe if we had something better then it was people would have been in there more often.

I've just checked into adding a chat feature. The only chat feature for vBulletin that I have found so far is one called 123 Flash Chat, and it is hella expensive at $199 for a 50-user max version (they do have a free version but it only works for 10 minutes). I don't think it would be worth the $200, but if enough people wanted it we could perhaps organize a collection to pay for it. The only reserve I would have is that I don't know what kind of overhead it would place on the server that's hosting us. So far we've never come even close to the 50GB/month limit (w've peaked at 20% so far), and we are only using about 8% of our 2GB storage space, but as this board grows those figures will eventually go up, and I wouldn't want to bring us closer to the limits any faster - once those limits are reached we'll probably end up having to cut things back a bit as it is (delete old posts, limit attachments, etc). That's a long way off, but it will happen someday...
In the meantime I'm sure we could come up with a free alternative - maybe IRC, maybe MSN (Ive never used MSN chat so I don't know if it could be integrated or not), or something like that...
I've been meaning to look for a free alternative replacement for chat. My main hindrance was thinking that most people here probably wouldn't like it if it came from me.
or, everyone can make a divided buddy list on AIM (free to sign up) and you can make a chat room on that...
