was the glove box light an option in 88? and if so should the wiring be there if I want to add one? thanks
Probably was still an option, I have one in my 85 XR-7.
We took an informal poll here about that a few years ago (and there was another on the NATO board IIRC). It'shiznit or miss for 1988--some people have them, some don't. Every '88 I've owned (4) did not have a glove box light. And some people have had them in all of their '88s. So flip a coin LOL.
That being said, it should be possible to wire one in although I can't say for sure if the harness end is in there. Should be above the glove box underneath the dash. If you've got that harness then a pre-1988 light assembly should just plug in.
I didn't have one in mine (delivered 12/87) and there's no plug for it either. Got one from the junkyard and wired it up instead.
How did this alleged glove-box light mount? I would be interested in seeing a picture of this. My 88 XR-7 does NOT have one.
Here's a front and back pic of the light itself, plus a pic of the cutout at the top right of the glovebox where the light attaches with 1 screw...
I've never had an 87-88 Bird with a glove box light. I'm up to 5 of them now.
Thanks MasterBlaster, now I have to find one!
If any of the 16,17,18(I forget exactly howmany) '87-'88s I owned had a glove box light, I surely don't remember it... I'm positive none of the TCs had one and 4-5 were loaded with about every option there was... Guess the GB light wasn't part of any of the TC preferred packages...
My 87 has one.......I don't think my red car did.
Would it be part of a light group? What option would one have had to have checked in order for one of these to magically appear in the glovebox?
My 84 3.8L T-Bird has a GB lamp.
The only thing on the window sticker that may cover it is "Light Group $35.00"
Good question, in the '88 Tbird brochure, there is no mention of a glove box lamp... The luxury Light/Convenience Group(avail on all models) includes cornering lamps, dual lighted vanity mirrors in sunvisors, illuminated entry system, and the auto lamp system...
BTW I'm 99% sure there is no wiring in my TC for a GB lamp... When I wired the keyless remote, I tied into the horn relay and trunk release which are both there at the glove box...
My T-Bird has the digital clock which was a $61 option.
In the EVTM it looks like the GB lamp power is in the same circuit as the clock.
My early 87 bird has all of these options and no glove box light. Maybe it is just part of the light/convenience package? Most turbo coupe are full of options from what I have seen. Now I need to find a 4 eye car to see if it has one...
My sons 83 bird has a gb light, it is a different style light though. My 87 bird doesnt, my 86 Cougar does and the dash I took from a 86 Cougar has it
My 1984 came with the light group. Courtesy lights in the glove box, console compartment and under each side of the dash. The 83-84 models use round standard Ford issue glovebox lamps that install in a simple hole about 1 1/2" round. The lamp in the glovebox is identical to the one in the console compartment. Curiously though, the round inside rear quarter panel trim lights were not included in this light group so I found some in a salvage car so equipped.
On a side note, when I harvested the passenger side power seat track from a 1985 Lincoln Continental to use in my Bird, that Lincoln had these interesting courtesy lamps that mounted under the front seats on both sides.
