Title: Stock 1987 HO cam
Post by: Quietleaf on September 24, 2009, 08:33:49 PM
I've got the HO computer and 19# injectors on order, but scoring a stock HO cam is proving to be difficult. I've been searching the forums for a few hours and I'm going to take the advice to not run anything more radical than a bone-stock cam with a SD setup. It's going in my 1987 motor, so I presume that I need a cam for hydraulic roller lifters (true? can I use my existing lifters?) Anyhow, I'm hoping that the cam is the last piece that I need.

Location: ZIP 19015.

Try the corral.net for the cam and I would replace the lifters. Years ago I had to pull my motor apart to replace a bad lifter and it really sucked because I had the motor apart a couple months before that.

Thanks for the tip, Vin! I went and posted on the corral forums. eBay came up empty, I've been searching for hours.

I have one i'll let go for 40+ shipping if your interested.
Came out of my 91HO engine with 100 000km's.
It's in mint condition, the only reason i swapped it out is because i went to a trickflow stage1.
If you have an 86-88+ 5.0L then it already has the roller lifters which you can reuse.
If it has flat tappets then you must change the lifters.

I've always heard the H.O cam actually had more low end than the Cobra cam....BUT,the Cobra had 1.7 roller rockers and GT 40 heads.

the 93 cobra had better parts like vinnie said. Also, the 91-93 cars had a cruddier intake and the lower rating for HP that year then the mustang. The 94-95 mustangs had the same intake with a few better parts, but only made 10 hp more and used the regular H.O. cam from my reading. I really think the cobra cam is slightly better and its alot easier to find a 91-93 cat/bird then a mustang around here.

The Cobra spec cam is more of a torque cam...Ford's way of keeping the freer breathing '93-'95 Cobra engine a nice all around performer.  That cam worked out nicely in the MN-12 cougars/birds because it traded a little top end HP for low end torque.  Not ALL MN-12 5.0's came with the cobra-spec cam, some were equipped with the good ol' HO cam.
