Title: Falls flat on its face at redline
Post by: RDOG on September 20, 2009, 10:59:51 PM
I did the LA3 swap in my 86 TC and car is very responsive but I am still having a problem when I hit red line 6000-6500rpm( car parked in driveway). The car shakes and sputters and does not want to continue to accelerate. It has new 255 walbro fuel pump, kirban adj fpr, new flowed and cleaned injectors, plugs gapped at .34, new fuel filter, new ranger cam and I replaced one bad HLA that took forever to pump up. I didnt replace the other ones which may be as old as the car.

Am I experiencing valve float? Are the old HLA's giving out at high rpm? Whats up?

You're hitting the factory set redline in the LA3 computers programming. I believe its set at 6250 or there abouts. Unless you modify the computer with a J3 chip or something, it isn't going to rev any higher no matter what you do to the motor. Also, I did the ranger cam swap in my 88, and it simply isn't a high rpm cam.  You can adjust it's power band with an adjustable cam gear though.  As soon as finances permit, I'm replacing it with something better, which is just about anything else, LOL.

Are you saying that you are reving it to the redline in park with no load?  This is not a good thing for any engine.

You mean the engine doesn't want to goto 7k, 8k, or 9k RPMS.. LOL I wonder why... Seriously do you think it makes any more power above 6500?

Factory EECs have a 6250 fuel cut, it ain't going to rev higher without a chip or EEC tuner to raise the limiter...

I think I now know why the factory did this.
