Title: Clearance issues with front rims
Post by: Innes on September 19, 2009, 01:30:06 PM
Ok I know this has been visited before sometimes you have to hear for yourself again.
I just scored a set of cobra rims off craigs list (17x9) though the inside of the rim says (17x8½) backs fit fine I’m having clearance  issues w/ the front. I bought ¼ spacers but.?
Questions
1. Don’t know if it will work still seems close.
2. The front hub on wheel is bigger that leaves a lot of the load on the lugs don’t it.
3.  I can only get 4 total turn out of the lugs. This cant be safe. What have u guys came across. I read somewhere that Vinnie had similar issues don’t know how he came about them just that I read he switch to 17x8 up front.

What kind of clearance issues? I'm running the same rims with 245's without spacers and no clearance problems.

They fit mine as well, although I did shim them slightly as a "just in case".I actually used washers, one per lug to shim them. They were thick, but no where near a 1/4 of an inch, and never had any issues with vibration or loose lugs.On yours, once the wheels are bolted on and the car is sitting flat, then check them. The higher the tire goes, the more room between it and the strut..Kitz has my Cobra R wheels. The 17x9 10th anniversary wheels also fit mine now,and I have 355 40 17's up front. No spacers, just bolt them on.

I have rubbing problems on the vert when I turn. no problems with the 5 lugs on the wheels  themselves

let me just say with using the spacers... if your not using bolt on spacers... use those vs a 1/4 inch plate.  that way you wont have to worry about not eough threads on the lug nuts.  id rather my wheels be held on with 10 threads vs 4.  just my 2 cents on the issue

also lay a straight edge across the rim itself and measure down to the mounting surface. that would help see exactly whats going on

Do you know what the offset of these rims are?  My 17x9's have a 20 offset and I have 275/40/17 autox tires all the way around on them with no spacer.  First time I went to take the wheels off with the new lugnuts, 2 lugs broke off, so its got 3" studs in the front.  Only rub is on the front swaybar and thats not very often.

I wasn't aware that any of the factory wheels have any clearance issues with the suspension (except for some 4-lug steelies). I thought the 17x9s might have issues with the fenders, though.
