Title: Cooling fan removal
Post by: Dansbirds on September 11, 2009, 09:18:45 PM
Car is a 86 XR7 with a single electric fan that decided to puke. I see replacements available thru the parts stores but its just the motor so how do you get the fan blade off? Its plastic and I dont want to break it

In the 84 shop manual there is a retaining clip on the end of the motor shaft. Remove the clip and slide the fan off.

I read the shop manual also and they paint a nicer picture than real life. I did remove the clip but there isnt any sliding off happening. I would guess 20+ years have that effect. I just dont want to break the plastic blades.

If you can get to it, cut the shaft off the motor at it's housing... Support the blade on something hollow and tap the shaft lightly a few times... Even if you can't cut the shaft, spray it with PB Blaster and let it soak over night
