Title: Need H-Pipe Hanger
Post by: jkirchman on April 12, 2005, 11:04:51 AM
I'm looking for the exhaust hanger that mounts between the transmission and transmission mount on an AOD Mustang.  I need one to replace the single bushing hanger that's currently on my car.  If anyone has one please let me know here or email (jkirchman@hotmail.com) me.

For reference, here is a blurry pic.  Sorry 'bout that.  Saved it from an eBay auction:

Well, the only one listed for our car years stated it was for a manual transmission, but check out 50resto.com. It may still actually work, someone else here may be able to confirm or deny this. The others are rather pricy :dunno: .

Indeed.  Which is why I'm hoping someone here has one for..uh.."not pricy."  I've been checking eBay for weeks.  Finally found one yesterday but I didn't get the chance to bid on it before the auction ended.

IMHO I can't see why the one listed for the 79-93 manual models wouldn't work. It seems like no matter the type of transmission, that the layout of the car would mean it mounts up the same regardless. So for 38 bucks and shipping for a new hanger i'd say that a good deal. Just need the elders to pipe-up on this one!

Yeah I had thought the same thing, but wanted to be on the safe side.  It seems to me that the H-pipe hangs in the same place regardless of the transmission so the shape of the hanger should not matter.  If anyone can confirm this please let me know.

No dice man, the only thing with that number (and it's missing the b) are tailpipe hangers. :dunno:

Did you find it on their site?  The closest thing I can find is part number LRS-5246 which is a tailpipe hanger.  I can't find any of the auto transmission h-pipe hangers.

That's the one I have under there now and the driver's side of the system hangs slightly lower than the passenger side because of it.

Well, adding the part I linked to earlier into the shopping cart corrected this, tho it's 38.95, my bad.

Okay for a minute let's assume I just want someone to tell me whether or not the manual transmission one will work, rather than hinting around with smilies that the parts are interchangeable.

cougarman, you are saying that LRS-5246B will work to hang an H-pipe from the bottom of an AOD transmission?

mine doesnt. but now that i think of it i forgot to mention that i cut the piece that goes into the mount, welded it to some unistrut flat stock and hung the h pipe with that and a u clamp. i was able to correct the angle in the dangle and hang the h pipe a little tighter into the car.

the 5 speed one will bolt right in place of the aod one.

id hit ebay up...

Yeah that could probably make a difference.  :hick:

There's one on eBay right now.  I'm gonna get it.  And if anyone on here snipes me, just watch the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and you'll see what's gonna happen.

Okay I put the bracket in there and the passenger side down pipe would not mate up with the header.  No matter how I tried, it just would not go far enough forward.  The bracket was holding it back and nothing would budge.  So I ground down the passenger side of the bracket until I could shove the pipe far enough forward to make it fit.  I got the system all bolted back together but there is still a leak between the header and the passenger side down pipe.  So if anyone has an H-pipe hanger made for an auto tranny please let me know because I need it.  Still.

Would flipping it around work? If the h-pipe needs to move forward, doing that may help.

Post by: jkirchman on April 26, 2005, 02:50:05 PM
Yeah I was going to try that when I got home from work today just to see if it would.  Another problem is that the driver side pipe is so tight against the shifter bracket that it screwed the shifter up too.  I am just not relishing the thought of climbing back under the car when I get home tonight.  Again.

Anyone else ever fooled with one of these brackets?  Will flipping it around work?  And what about the shifter bracket?

Now that i'm thinking about it, which one did you pick up, the 5.0 Resto one or the ebay one?

eBay one, but they are the same.

Update:  I tried flipping the bracket around but the transmission was in the way.  There is no freakin' way that bracket will work with an AOD transmission.  If anyone has proof that it will then I'd like to see it.  I eventually gave up on it and just put the old one back on until I can find a bracket made for an auto tranny.

Then why the **** did you tell me it would work if you've never even used one?  I've spent the last three nights after work underneath that  car taking the exhaust system apart and putting it back together TWICE based on your advice.  If you don't know, then don't say anything.  .  (http://www.dnet.net/user/jkirchman/gifs/rant2.gif)

Yeah, the 5-speed one doesn't work well. You do need one from an automatic. Also, you cannot use a Mark VII one because it's all funky. I tried on the convertible and did not get it to work. Have you called MPS? 770-867-2644. I'll bet they have one from a Mustang AOD for ya...they're pretty good for stuff like that.

Thanks for the advice Eric.  Wish you would have popped in here a week ago.  Would have saved me a lot of time and kept a lot of road grime from falling in my eyes.  :wtf:

MPS is actually just a couple hours south of me so I will give them a call and see what they say.

Cougarman -- Sorry I lost my temper.  But I lost a lot of time based on your inaccurate advice.  If I am not sure if something will work or not I don't say anything.  I assumed since you said it would work that you knew it would work.  I apologize if that is an inaccurate assumption.

Nice Chuck. ;)

Actually I did watch this thread Jim...thought things were wrapped up at one point. You also have to remember that H-pipes have a really bad tendency to just not fit right. There is usually some "massaging" needed (vice, heat, pry bars, and of course, the BFH). I've never had an H-pipe or X-pipe fit correctly unless it was custom bent for the car itself. This could explain the exhaust leak too. But the hooks on the H-pipe can only go so far to fit into the hanger. You need the correct one for that, no cheating.

This system fits together pretty well.  It's all made by MAC, save for the headers, and there are no leaks when I use the stock H-pipe bracket.  The only thing I'm worried about when I get the correct bracket is the driver side downpipe pressing against the shifter arm under there.  There isn't much margin for error on that side.

In that case you'll probably need to shave down that bracket a little. Either that, or mark the H-pipe, take it to an exhaust shop and have them dimple the pipe in that area. Or maybe both. You won't know until you know. :)

jkirchman, to make up for the misunderstanding the other day. Here is some pics of an h-pipe hanger from an aod mustang, we did a aod to t5 swap on. Oh by the way the h-pipe was not hanging from the mount. I didn't mean I don't deal with the hangers, just I never use them, I just set the h-pipe rods on top of the cross member, works great. If this is the mount you are looking for, if you want I will trade you for the one you have, let me know.  Herb :D

Sorry about that Herb.  I was cranky from being underneath the car for so long without getting anything done.  Wasted time and energy.

That is exactly the mount I need.  Unfortunately I mangled the one I have trying to grind it and drill new holes in it in a futile attempt to make it work so you probably don't want it.  If you are willing to sell that one then I will gladly buy it from you.
