Title: You think repairing a T-bird or Cougar is expensive?
Post by: V8Demon on September 03, 2009, 07:40:27 AM
How about if a hood cost $18,400?
Yes. You read that correctly.

Grille bezels = $690.00/pair
Headlight = $650.00/each
Wheel = $1753.55/each
Emblem kit = $201.25
Front spoiler = $3392.50
Hood = $18,400.00
Carbon fiber mirror cover = $400.00
Hood pins = $632.50
Hood vents = $661.25
Bumper stripes = $530.00
Hood stripes = $575.00

What car has these prices for it's parts?  A high end Ferarri or some other exotic from across an ocean?  Nope.

It's a Ford.

Maybe this explains why there are two of them sitting on the showroom floor where I work.

BTW, Glass top is $1995 from the factory. $2058.08 list not including installation.

I would throw a regular front clip and any other parts it would take to make it work on there and call it a day. Maybe buy a rear ended 2005+ v6.

$18K for a hood? No way...there HAS to be a mistake! I used to sell those parts and we'd get a grand for the Super Snake Hood! Even if it was carbon fiber there's just no way! Even if it was shipped to another country, there's just NO FRIGGIN' WAY a person in their right mind should pay that much! Something is definitely wrong here!

There is always the aftermarket ;). You know there are hoods and bumpers and stuff like that out there for cheaper than that.

Roy, I used to work at a Ford dealership as well and I still to this day think that 2K for a overgrown sunroof is WAY to much. My weakness was always the 09 Bullitt we had sitting in our showroom next to the GT500.

Ahhh, the price (and folly) of owning a Shelby.

Imagine what it would be like having this dilemma with say, a '68 GT500KR...

Still, I sold those Alcoa wheels all the time and I sold them for 2K a set. I'd get the Shelby hoods from Ford for $800 bucks...whoever this guy is dealing with is smoking crack...or HE is...

You won't get THAT Shelby hood from Ford......read the link I posted.

SAI owns the rights to the KR hood and front spoiler molds. The only way to get those is through SAI. Even the twist hood pins are not available through FRPP,and SAI won't sell them, I know I tried, same with the 40th badges

My bad, I was thinking about the stock hood, not the KR hood...still, somebody's gettin' reamed with no lube here IMHO...

I read somewhere that one year maintenance for a new-er Ferrari can get up to 20K.

Still a shock with these prices though..

for 18 grand you could strap a new focus onto your shelby mustang instead and still have a few bucks to spare, what a crock!

Price up a set of wheels and tires for a Bugatti Veyron some time. And they have to be replaced, wheels AND tires, every 40k miles or something like that. They're Michelin PAX tires, sort of a modern day TRX

For a car that costs over 1 million dollars I could see that.

18 grand for a Mustang hood though?

I'd buy a used Ferrari before a KR....

I still have yet to see this hood for sale anywhere for over $1,100. Or Alcoa wheels for over $500 apiece, or anything selling for any of those prices this guy is saying...

"You think repairing a T-bird or Cougar is expensive?"

Compared to what, a lawn mower? Next to my C-10, this is the cheapest car to fix that I've ever owned.

That's because these cars are generally worn down and make dirt cheap transportation for all sorts of people. Any repairs are "too expensive". I like my cheap part, cheap insurance tbird. Almost all else costs more in all aspects, many including fuel.

All of this stuff you show is specific limited production Shelby parts. The more limited parts production is the more each part costs per unit. Basically Shelby's are still rich man's toys. You should pretty much understand you have to pay to play.

No regular Mustangs have replacement part prices near this high. Mustang repleacment body parts are quite reasonable.

That's not an $18,000 Mustang ... It's a $54,000 plus Shelby with very specific limited production parts....

Now my 08 Mustang stickered for $24,000. I didn't pay that though. After rebates and incentives I got mine for $17,000.

Passed by a whire KR early this week. There is no room left for any more tire. I was just waiting of it to rub it was so close.

I like em, but not that much.

For what I've had to replace, it's a bargain. To be fair, though, I've never had my shocks/struts or ABS system fail.... yet. I'm sure if my ABS system does go out, I'll be looking into retrofitting something more current, (and cheaper) from a newer Mustang before trying to source out replacement parts.

You're probably correct, but you're leaving out the most important factor....  emotion. The guy with the KR could care less if he could build 5 Foxes for less money. In his mind, the KR is 10 times cooler, so he's happy. Personally, I agree with him. Not necessarily on the KR thing, but my wife has a car we paid too much for and we don't care. That's because to us, it was worth it. Yep, emotion, it's a powerful thing. :D
