Odd how he would say they didn't make the metal grille in 85 but yet my 85 Xr7 had one....

The 86 on the other hand had the plastic one.

There's no rhyme or reason with the metal vs. plastic grilles. The 1985's were supposed to come with metal ones, but I have a feeling that somewhere along the line some bean counter figured the plastic ones would cost less. Good for us because they're significantly lighter too. The 1985-86 Cougars were a mish-mash of metal and plastic grilles as a result. Either grille is correct for either model year because there will likely never be a way to prove things otherwise.
