This is far from a fox body...but it is my latest project. I work as a JD salesman and scored this at work for $50! Its a 1973 John Deere 112. It has the 12 hp Kohler and gear drive transmission. So far I have about $200 in everything. I got the rear tires for free, bought a new steering wheel and seat, and the rest was just sanding and painting! Its been a cheap and fun project. I've always wanted one of these. The only thing left to do now is fix the hood. Its fiberglass and is cracked pretty bad. Should be a great opportunity to learn how to work on fiberglass...any tips?

I've had near as much fun tinkering with this as the T-bird...mainly because I have converted it from a clunker to a looker for CHEAP! ;)
That's cool, someone really beat the out of that steering wheel, didn't they
Thanks!
Ummm yeah. I wish I knew how they bent that wheel. I had to take a torch to it to get the wheel off. It has been painted before (poorly) and I almost wonder if someone tried getting the wheel off then and bent it somehow. The steering shaft seems to be OK though!
Cool...looks as thow it will run for another 100yrs. :poke:
Yoiu know for a guy who used to work for Deeres its nice to see a little JD green on here. Nice work!
Fiberglass isn't all that hard to work with. I would use the Epoxy resin instead of the Polyester stuff as the epoxy is a lot easier to work with. You can pick up a little book on working with the stuff at your local West Marine store.
One thing to remember, drill a hole at the ends of each crack. This will keep the crack from running after you make your repairs.
Cool little project!
Shiny Side Up!
Bill
Thanks guys!
What no tire shine!
You know if you showed that off around here (We have 4 JD factories and 1 Engineering site in my immediate area) you'd have the old JD collectors around here just loving it. I'd say you got a hell of a deal on something you can turn around and sell to a JD collector. What do you plan to do with it?
You are doing great work!
I used to have a 140 and it was a nice tractor. When the stock 14hp engine went out I put a 2 cly 18hp B&S in it. That gave it lots of power in tall grass.
Have fun.

Thief! You stole my wheel covers!

looks great!!!!
lol. That will be the final thing I do...got to get the hood done 1st!
I thought about selling it...I could turn a mean profit! Right now I have around $300 in everything and could probably get $1200 at least. But, I will probably use this one to pull my lawn sweeper, lawn roller, etc. It does have a deck that is in good shape so when I relocate and get a bigger yard, I can always mow with it too.
lol...nabbed those babies for $20!! I think they look great on there (and on yours too).
$20?! , you DID steal those! They retail for like $100. Fortunately mine were Xmas presents a few years ago so I didn't pay a cent. ;)
The new toy looks great, very nice refinishing job!
One of my customers had a mower fire and the chrome hubcaps were about the only thing salvagable...so he sold 'em to me!
Gotta love that JD Green!! Nice looking work. I hauled those things from GA and the farm tractors or combines from either Moline IL or Waterloo IA. Have fun with it.
Cool...did you work for a dealership or for a trucking company?
Got the 112 project done over the weekend. This was my 1st time working with fiberglass and there was a lot I learned that will make the outcome even better next time. The paint was barely dry and a friend of mine and I were trying to find stuff to try and pull with it. lol.

I had a lot of fun with this little project, it was a lot different than working on cars (well mainly cheaper and easier) and is something I can put into good use around the old homestead.
Now its back onto the T-bird, as one of the last big cruise-ins of the area is this weekend and I have yet to even hit a show with it this year!!
That's perty!
I like John Deere stuff...have 4 combines and a big drill...
I'd like to have a mower, I hear they're pretty tough.
You did a fine job on that, looks brand new :D
Hey thanks. Growing up on a farm we didn't have much JD stuff either. Just a baler and planter. But now that I sell JD equipment I kinda got a bug for them. I have this old 112 and a 1957 720 diesel (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g21CRKP0QY")(one of the old 2 cylinder tractors about a 60 hp) that I bought from my father-in-law. It has the little "pony" motor that you use to start the big motor with. They are kinda like Harley's...nothing else sounds like an old John Deere 2 banger.
Where's the leafblower turbo?
LOL
Looks great. I like small motor projects. Like you said CHEAPER! Now if I could drag my old Mini Bike out...
Ive always been Kubota. My Grams bought a L175 back in the 70's. Grease it, change the oil, sharpen blades, fuel it up. Only had one issue way back, the tranny wouldnt go in, or come out of gear, cant remember which. He is pretty sure my Uncle was out screwing around on the highway construction dirt hills and messed it up.
He went and bought a new one 2-3 years ago. Its nice, ps, auto, 4WD, trac loc select (IDK what to really call it). Didnt need a new one, he just wanted it. We only use it to cut his land. Occasional pulling or plowing.
