Title: steel wheel size?
Post by: blackcat85 on August 17, 2009, 12:06:30 AM
hi
i am looking for a replacement steel wheel rim
for my 1984. i found a website that says the size is 14x 5 and it fits 1979 to 1993
and then they have a listing for a 14 x 5 1/2 size
and it says it fits 85 to 88.  i have 205/70 R 14 tires.
i thought all steel wheels rims are the same size.

thanks for any help

If I had to guess, the 14 1/5 rim would be the TRX's. I would bet you could find some rims cheap on the forum.

This is incorrect. Any TRX rim is metric and is about 15.3" diameter or 390mm and mounts only to expensive and hard to find tires.

I just bought steel rims for my Tbird. They use four hole 14" diameter. The rim width is 5.5". Standard tire sizes listed for most Tbirds and Cougars using the 14" steel rims are 205/70R14 and 215/70R14. If you want a wider tire, increase the first number and decrease the second number. For example 225/65R14 or 235/60R14... You want to keep the overall diameter of the tire close to the same to prevent a major speedometer error and this plus sizing method does that.

The 5" wide steel rims are typically used on Mustangs from 1979-93. The standard tire size is smaller on Mustangs, usually 195/70R14 or 205/70R14. The 5" rims will work fine on the Tbirds, it's just not advisible to go with a tire that is too wide. The wider the rim the more tire sidewall stability and better handling.
