Title: Cash for clunkers...FINAL NUMBERS 9-26-09
Post by: 83-88T-Bird Guy on August 02, 2009, 08:42:53 PM
I was cruising thru one of the local car lots and saw alot of vehicles on the back lot. In the back of the group I saw what was a 85 or 86 Cougar in beautiful shape. Definitely garage kept and since it had a digital dash I couldn't see the mileage.
It took me about 3 minutes until I figured out what the " C4C stood for on all the windshields...cash for clunkers.
Made me sick when I saw that Cougar and if I am correct don't all of the C4C vehicles have to be crushed ?
The saddest part is that this is only the beginning....

Man thats a clean car!
I think you are right they do have to be crushed. I know they can never be put back on the road. Thats sad that someone turned that in for $4500 towards a new car they are going to have to make payments on.

On the other hand you never know what it needed for work. I agree it is sad, luckily for me there wont be any 87-88 birds or cougars crushed, they don't qualify anymore. :)

Thats sad...would have made some 16 yr old kid one hell of a 1st car. I guess all of our cars are just a little bit rarer now.
Living in the rust belt I cringe at the thought of all the rust free cars being demolished out west. s don't know how good they have it.

I posted these pics on a Mustang site and one of the jerks responded "it's just a Cougar"
Maybe, but it is just a REAL CLEAN Cougar that will be crushed. I mean this car's plastic lenses and glass on the car have a great shine on it !
It would be totally different if it was all clapped out.

Has a third brake lamp, so it's a '86... I haven't looked, but seems a SEFI 5.0 would make better mileage than the program's minimum requirements, guess it could be a 3.8... My friggin '93 Grand Marquis doesn't qualify... I'd trade em...
I just checked and neither the '86 5.0 or 3.8 with AOD qualify... The 3.8 with C5 auto tranny does qualify, at 18mpg...
Better go look at it closely, maybe they screwed up and is a AOD car...

Based on the wheel covers, I would imagine it's a 3.8/C5 car. Still, it looks like it has a rock-solid body.

That really sucks.
You should get a line on what yard it is headed for since AFAIK they can sell parts off the car before they crush it.

I'll be blunt here. Would YOU....any of you pay 4500 for that car?
If it had very much sentimental value to me, I'd keep it...if it was a high mileage 3.8 car with mechanical issues...AND I had the money for new car payments, AND insurance...you goded right I'd trade it in. Right now I don't have a reliable vehicle I can call my own, but if I did, no, I would'nt trade it. It's all about what the (former) owner is going through. And, as it's been said on this board a million-and-one times, to most of the general population, these cars we call Foxes are just an old 80's 2 door car, mostly imprcatical to todays multi-children families. Then the added maintenance of a 20something year old vehicle, and they're usually not fit for a daily driver.
I know I'm gonna ruffle feathers as soon as I hit the "post reply", but realize most people don't give a flying shag about our favorite cars. Yes, it is a shame, and it is reality.
Now, can someone legally acquire a "c4c" car after it's been....turned in, for lack of better words?
BTW, that IS a nice Cougar, be nice to drop in my HO, T5, and Turbines, and call it a cruiser...

You have valid points. Yes, no-one was going to give that owner 4,500 for that Cougar. IF it was in great working condition, maybe 2,500....3k tops.
I can see the owners view on turning it in.
I know the dealers have to seize the engine. I don't care about that. I just would like to have the rest of the car to make a drag car (un-gutted of course) with a sleeper look and a 460. :D
I am going to ask them which salvage yard will get the group (if they will tell me) and try to buy the rolling chassis.

C4C gives $4500 if your increase in fuel economy is 10MPG or higher. If it's lower than 10MPG you get $3500. Or something like that. I know that there are only two rebates, $3500 and $4500, and you need to meet a certain MPG increase to get the higher rebate, I'm just not sure of the exact amount.

i work @ a yard that partites in the c4c program...we cannot sell the vehicles, rolling chassis ect. However we can sell body panels, glass ect, engine parts are off limits... yeah it's sad all kinds of good vehicles are going, late 90's f150 with under 100k on it, even heard of a corvette even going...plus all the engines that are being destroyed, the good news is that the f150's were the last to sieze with the "liquid sand".

Title: Cash for clunkers...FINAL NUMBERS 9-26-09

It's liquid glass, not sand. If most of the car can be salvaged, I'd say the only thing that has to go is the 3.8 auto, and I know no one on here would miss that combo.

Nope. The free market forces without government intervention made cars like this inexpensive and affordable for us and those on a budget. Not so much anymore... at least until the money runs out. Then lets see what's left.
Also, our timeline for running out of parts and cars will get fast-forwarded a bit because of this. Don't know by how much though, hopefully not much at all but we'll have to see.

My only hope here is that they never get their rebate checks and lose their asses !
Stupid ass politicians put way too high of a "bounty" on these old cars @ 3500 and 4500.....JMO :D...now I need a drink.

I like thuderchickens comments on another thread,,, I to wonder how effiecient it is to crush, melt down, respool metal and rebuild another car.,,if thats where the metal goes. Smells like the same amount of pollution (usa) if not more (china) to me.
So,, my thoughts on this whole thing are all founded on the premis behind all the fake money holding it up similair to my bitching and moaning about the first stimulus by GB junior.
All this sounds like a behind the scenes drug deal between the US and china to pay back debt in the form of metal. GO GREEN,,ha!!

OH,, and one other thing,,,,,,,,
I do not believe that toyota, nissan ect should be qualified to run the program.
why you ask? Because the money goes to another countries stock market. I dont give a rats ass about those who say "but,,,but,,but,, they are made in the US".
the only reason they are made in the usa is because our own US makers slipped and let them become a pack leader in the auto market here. Shame on us.

It's a sad thing, this Cash for Clunkers business. I have been in Indiana for the past week and a half for work, and on my drive home last night, once i got back here to where I live, I saw a 30 or 40 yard dumpster with at least two (as far as I could see from the road) cars inside at a local py GM dealership. What a mess.

I read on CNNMoney that 80% of the trade-ins were trucks and SUV's, so it's not all horrible news. And of course, most of those were Explorers, so I suppose we'll be losing some GT40 and GT40P heads and Cobra intakes.
One thing to remember, is that for the most part the cars being traded in were junkers. They look like perfectly good cars to us (IE the Cougar in this thread), but they were not worth the amount of money given to them. If they were worth more than the $4500 (or $3500) the dealer would talk the customer out of C4C and into a plain trade-in so he could sell the car and make money on it. At least a smart dealer would. I know, I know... smart dealer = oxymoron, but no dealer in his right mind is going to let somebody trade a $10k vehicle in for $4500 worth of C4C money...
Yeah, I know, I'm grasping at straws, but I hope at least a little bit of common sense prevails when it comes to who's trading what in...

Am I missing something here? Just for grins I went to the Ford website and used the calculator to figure what the amount would be for my 87 Bird with a 3.8 automatic. The car doesnt qualify, so how did someone turn in that Cougar? I have a feeling alot of cars getting turned in wouldnt qualify as honestly how many of them out there were getting under 18mpg(avg when new) I would hate to be the poor dude who turned in a car with no payment thinking he was getting a new car less 4500 only to recieve a call from the dealer stating, we sped your car and now found out it didnt qualify so we need 4500 more. My personal opinion was that this program was a dumb idea from the start with to many gray areas. In some ways its quite similar to the housing mess. Getting people into things they cant afford does not stimulate growth. By the way, I had no thought of sping my Bird, I was trying to prove my point to a guy I know who turned in his vehicle which by all the C4C calculators isnt eligible. Yes he's driving around a new vehicle but he cant figure why he has a temp plate and they didnt transfer his old tag, doesnt smell right to me.

That '86 Cougar has the 3.8/C5 drivetrain combo, which just squeaks in at 18MPG. Your '87 with the 3.8/AOD combo gets 19MPG combined and is therefore ineligible. The only 87-88 T-Bird that qualifies is the automatic TC.
I would think any dealer that gave C4C money and then didn't get the rebate because the car didn't qualify would be SOL. It's up to the dealership, not the customer, to make sure the vehicle they take in on trade is eligible.

i know they might not be eligable.. but im talking as if this program is a trend. not this one deal will kill the cars we love (older cars) but if they ad more incentive to the sale like the clunkers for cash and other programs might become a giant eating up used cars for raw material to be made into your 2015 taurus.

There is one small difference between american and european C4C programme. We (in Europe) can get between cca 1500 to 3000 $. Most people get 1500$ and they are happy. The main difference is when you send your car to junkyard you will get only paper with stamp "Ecologically liquidated". Nothing else, no money. But you can buy or get some parts from that car. The money from C4C is just price reduction on the new car. And the limit of the new car's price is about 25 000$. That old car leaves on the junkyard for parts and the car is crushed after tear down. Just metal. In some special occasions you can buy a whole car from junkyard, but you can't to register it again. You can use "papers" from another same car and change VIN number of chasis. VIN number of motor can be erased.
I think it's much more better version that your C4C, where whole car is crushed and you can't buy any part from this car.

You can buy parts from C4C cars, just not the engine or tranny (and possibly the rear end - the law says "drivetrain")

As ThunderChicken stated above, the dealer has some mis-informed/un-educated on the subject asses. Hell, those dealers should know more about the C4C laws than anyone !
Also, they are probably paranoid about getting a $ 15,000 penalty.

I watched the video of the Thunderbird get it's engine blown up last night and lost sleep over it. Many good cars are being destroyed for no reason.

I watched the video too, and it further supports the view that this entire program is asinine. The new classics are being executed so people can make payments on a bland, heavy, bloated new car.
There is a bias here, of course; we're all car enthusiasts and have a penchant for any vintage cars. Somebody submitted a beautiful '86 Mustang GT (pictures on Corral Forums) and I felt physically ill.
This video really made me feel sick about the program: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SXA1oZnj98&feature=related
When I think about how they will grenade every engine in every car in the program, it just seems so insanely stupid. Incredibly senseless and wasteful. It's like a group of kids came up with the idea while stoned. What better way to perpetuate the throw-away consumer society in which we live.
I became physically nauseated with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwH58myuQms&NR=1
'01 Mazda pick-up with 75k miles.
Where is this country going to be in 10 years? Will we eventually have to pay extra taxes and/or fines for driving these cars?

It seems to me that the older (sqarish, 80's to early 90's) F-150's and 250's are very popular around here for this program. I found about 8 at two local dealerships with the death markings C4C on the windshield. I'm gonna shiznit when I see an old lightning put up to be destroyed in favor of a Ranger Edge or some bullshiznit.

This one is pretty gory even though it is an older Chevy:
Running truck to chunk of metal in less than 5 minutes. YAY FOR CASH FOR CLUNKERS! YAY MEGA-WHEE! I'm gonna take my T-Bird in.

98 V8 SHO:mad: 4 GT40 5.0 Explorers  a really, really nice 85 LTD Crown Victoria with 45,000 miles:mad: 96 Impalla SS:mad: 96 4.6 T-bird with 85,000 miles:mad:

There's video footage of a dealer's lot on YouTube. You can clearly see a black Lightning (pre-supercharged) and an '87 Mustang 5.0.

I was at the Salvage yard last weekend and saw several GT40 explorers and other nice vehicles. What a waste! All of the C4C vehicles had bright pink spray paint all over the engines. And they had signs posted that any engine part with pink paint cant be sold. What a waste. All of this so it can be remade into a 2011 Hyundai. AARGHH!

My four year old daughter, Coira, just walked up and looked at this video, having no idea what the video was about or anything about C4C (as you would imagine. She's 4.). She saw the fork-lift carrying the truck and what did she say?
"There's nothing wrong with that car. Why's it at the fixer?"

According to Wikipedia, 3,000 Syclones were made, and a little over 4700 Typhoons were made...
Rare? oh yeah...to see one fall to the C4C bullshiznit? shaging priceless. Sometimes I have no use for ignorant-assed legislation...this is one of those times. :toilet:
Then again....the former owner probably didn't maintain it, drove the piss out of it, and let fall apart. Sad thing is, we all knew it ran... :flame:

all they do is blow the motors then the salvage yards get to bid on them at auction. Still its a waste of good cars. My misses has a jeep cherokee that needs alot of work and ive seen 10 or so that are in ALOT better shape(no rust, dents, ect) and there low mileage. And they say there doing this for fuel. Her's gets close to 400 miles to 1 tank of fuel

i was sad to see an 83-86 bird patiently waiting in line at my local ford dealer....i couldn't tell what year specifically because it was waay behind the fence. I called and asked for the front clip, and the dealership tells me they don't even own the cars, that they're instantly sold the moment they come in.

Bringing this thread back from the grave...
The U.S. government has just posted its final listing (http://"http://www.cars.gov/files/official-information/trade-in-vehicles.pdf") of all traded-in vehicles for the C.A.R.S./Cash for Clunkers program. (click the link above to download a copy)
Bottom line: not so bad for the Foxes, a substantial loss for MN12's. Only 67 Fox Cats and Birds from 1987-88 were lost, and 239 from 1984-86. So a little over 300 cars gone, in TOTAL, from 1984-88, for both Thunderbirds and Cougars. Guess it wasn't as bad as we'd feared, although those are still 300 fewer cars from which to pull parts.
Other misc. cars--and it's a real shame that they're all gone:
BMW 635csi 1989 13 BMW 850i 1992 1 BMW M3 1991 1 BMW M5 1991 1 Buick GNX 1987 1 Buick Riviera Convertible 1984 1 Buick Riviera Convertible 1985 19 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible 1984 4 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible 1985 22 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1988 22 Ford Mustang 1984 18 Ford Mustang 1985 48 Ford Mustang 1986 100 Jaguar XJR 1995 5 Jaguar XJR 1996 4 Laforza 1989 1 Laforza 1990 2 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Classic 1988 31 Rolls-Royce Continental R 1997 1 Pontiac 20th Anniversary Trans Am 1989 1
And we know of at least the one GMC Syclone and one GMC Typhoon.

I'd say the numbers were seriously fornicateked for several models...
Mark VIII, only two '96, one '97 and all the other years were from 120 to 187???
Only year Town car traded was 1994 and there were 694??? Yeaah right, our government at it's finest...
From what I saw when I checked MPG numbers, many of the ones listed didn't qualify, including my '93 Grand Marquis... But apparently someone traded at least one in(and two '92 that also didn't qualify)... I'll bet some dealers eat a bunch of trade ins...

The 20th anny Trans Am would be a shame too. Those were very rare and very fast (Buick GN drivetrain). I've gotta wonder at the eligibility of some of those models. Would a '99 Cougar really get worse mileage than Tom's '93 Grandma Marquis, which didn't qualify?

There's a lot more to a manufacturer's economic footprint than just where the car's actually built or where the company's head office is. All manufacturers contribute significantly to local economies regardless where the car is actually made. Salesmen, mechanics, parts guys, lot boys, dealership administration, etc are all local jobs provided by any manufacturer. Then there are the spin-offs: advertising (on radio, TV, and newspaper), sponsorships, charities, training, property taxes, building maintenance (snow plowing, lawn mowing, building contsruction, upgrades & repair), etc. Even supposedly non-related businesses that are near the dealership gain: Lunch truck drivers, fast food restaurants, etc. S single dealership, depending on its size, can contribute to dozens or even hundreds of jobs.
That being said, I still think the whole C4C thing was a travesty, not just for the fact that over half a million perfectly good cars were destroyed, but because government (and by extension, taxpayers) shouldn't be subsidizing private citizens buying new cars. I was sooooooo glad the Canadian government decided not to follow in the US gov't footsteps. And the funny thing is that since the gov't decided not to do C4C many dealerships started their own programs - in other words, the industry is funding its own bailout, exactly what should have happened in the USA.

That was EXACTLY the problem with the C4C program. Either the people that used it could and KNEW they could afford a new car payment, or the ones that THOUGHT they could are in for a real screwing. It was just bad business altogether. Not only will the ones that THOUGHT they could afford it in trouble, but the one they traded in can't even be put back on the road. It'll be good for drivetrain (excluding engine) parts, and body parts, but that's it. Meanwhile, some kid out there needs a car they can afford to drive, and won't have to buy full coverage insurance for. They're simply not available until the next round of hand-me-downs from the rich folkshiznit the market.
There is no cure for stupid, and this government is proving it.
