Well since the '88 has been getting a little worn and ready for some much needed work, I have made the descision to buy a new DD and park her for now....
Here she is, I pick it up tonight at 8pm:
Stats as advertised:
1996 4.6L Cougar XR-7
Power Windows And Locks, Automatic, 4.6 liter V8, RWD, Air Conditioning (it works), Keyless Entry, Black Exterior, Grey Interior, Sunroof, Power Driver's seat, etc...
Runs great, no rust! 2nd owner, oil changes done every 5000 kms!
What no 3.8?
I saw that and all I could think of is DOHC swap!!!! :D
LOL...
Looks like a nice car, but that's also what I thought when I bought the '95 LX... Been gone over a year, haven't missed it...
should get 25 on the road. my 94 did. super comfortable
cars.
if i can ever get rid of the 88. im buying the 94 back.loved it.
it was an EVERY option car.
;) Thats possibly in the works.... I just spent two hours driving it.... Man is it a nice car, and fun too!!:burnout: Already got some stuff to do to it tomorrow.
Here it is after a quick trip through the car wash :upsidedow :

Looks great man, much better choice than the SuperPoop.
Looks great R J. By the way....HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
I know it is tomorrow, but I gotta work... figured I'd get it in now!!!
Hahaha, , you beat Mercury man too it!! LOL thanks...
Nice car! Looks great! What a find too!
I test drove a 40th anniversary with the 4.6, and I was a little dissapointed....it wasn't terrible, but I felt like the 3.8 cougar i test drove earlier could easily keep up with it.
Then you test drove one with issues... this thing hauls a$$. and all the 4.6L tbirds and cougars I have been in move out very nicely...
My '95 LX had no issues
and was a turd, but that's compared to my '88...
i thought my 94 was peppy too. had a shift kit too.
the computer shuts the car off at 105 mph.at least in
94. complete silence till it drops a couple of mph, then
its running again. dont know what that is in kph. i know
you would never try it out[lol]--great find, have fun with
it.--irv
-tell me u didn't put k&n stickers on the fenders!!!:hick:
My 86 cougar would keep up with my freinds sisters 94 4.6. Hers would pull harder up top, but mine would walk away from it from a stop. By 60 mph I was always ahead of her by a couple of car lengths. Hers had less then 80,000 miles on it and the gray 86 had over 120,000.
Well my Fox is waaaay faster than my MN-12. Could have something to do with that 3.8 :rollin:
I had my old 94 cougar around 115/116-ish. Computer shuts the fuel off i think.
Ok guys it broke, already... Man, what is it with my luck and cars lately. It was broke when I bought it weather the previous owner knew or not I dont know, dont care... Look at the engine pic, just to the left of the alternator... see the antifreeze seeping? yep... the intake is cracked... I tried to make due with JB weld, but it started really leaking from the T-stat area, which was just changed by the previous owner.... so I ordered the repair kit for it... $650!!! Happy farcking birfday to me, near the price I paid for the whole car.
I have never touched a 4.6L before so hopefully the intake swap goes off without too much problems....
Tccoa has a lot of good threads on it.
should have just fixed the fox cougar. just saying...... :)
haha, yeah the guys over there have me going with the PI intake for it... so I will use that. Adds, power, durability and is cheaper... why not?
Did you check the salvage yards by you for a PI intake? I know the revised intake uses a cast alumimum coolant crossover.
Do the PI swap. Also, I believe these were recalled for the cracked crossover tube, you may be able to get it fixed for free.
I swapped my manifold over to the updated piece with the aluminum crossover; it was very simple. Based on your technical skills, you should be able to knock it out in one afternoon with no problems.
I love my MN12. It may not be the fastest thing on the street, but it would outrun my old '88 XR7 5.0 any day of the week.
You should dechrome the taillights and smoke 'em down with Niteshades.
Also, make sure you switch to Mercon V and install a tranny cooler - it will greatly extend the lift of the 4R70W. In addition, if you have a sloppy 1-2 or 2-3 shift, you should definitely replace the shift accumulator pistons to the updated pieces. You can also leave out the bottom spring(s) to make firmer shifts.
I did exactly that 50,000 miles ago and the car chirps the tires when it shifts during WOT runs.
I may have some cool MN12 parts laying around that would look great on that car. I'll go through my stash and let you know.
cool thanks for the tips, cragar, will do... I plan to dechromw everything and tint the tails, but that VHT niteshades is hard to find up here...
I tried the salvage yards around here and nobody has anything, so I ordered a brand new intake for a 2001 Mustang GT (PI) and will be swapping that on this afternoon...
Will the PI intake bolt onto the non-PI heads? I'd always thought they had to be done as a set, but of course I'm no modular expert...
As far as I have learned you cannot without some sort of adapter (Maybe?) there really is no point though other than to save some coin.
Wrong, and the point besides being cheaper? the intake runners are bigger and longer... what will that do for your mid range to top end power?.....
yep it does fit....
Check this out:
http://www.americanmuscle.com/pi-intake-install.html
Thanks to the guys at TCCoA for showing that link to me...
All the parts are ordered. the intake I pick up tomorrow, same with the gaskets and o-rings, but I have to wait till tuesday for the heater pipe that runs through the block...
I should have gone with the PI intake when I replaced mine.
I had plans to do a DOHC swap with a tune, but working on that engine intimidates the hell out of me. As long as it will still do a burnout, I'll leave it stock. :fart:
Yes but I meant there is no point in keeping your stock intake other than saving money. I guess I should have made myself a little more clear. Sorry about that.
I was wondering the same thing.
I heard that on GMs and CVs with this mod that the coolant tube in the "V" needs to be swapped as well. Good luck.
Where was he talking about gm's???????????
Ford's here dude.

WAT? :wtf:
Grand Marquis/Crown Victoria.
At least he's living up to his screen name...
EDIT
Oh well... Got me too, and I have a '07 GM with the two piece intake(of course I've only seen it maybe a half dozen times)... Hood was last open a month ago when I changed oil...
sorry pita...
Can anyone else see how that was confusing?
looked fine to me......comprehension involves reading in context :shakeass:
i think we will need a color pictorial and commentary
when you install the intake and a butt dyno comparison
of the 2 intakes. --irv
+1
And a list of the other mods you start thinking about doing once you're in there!
Well, my PI intake came in today, was $300 from A&A in hamilton. Now just waiting on the PI heater tube that runs under the intake to come in, (yes you need it when doing the PI swap, you also need to pull the waterpump and tap out the nipple that he hose attached to for the proper PI type one. that sounds like it wil be the worst part of the whole swap...) should be here tuesday.
Then I can start repairing this thing. Cant wait, I already miss driving it. LOL
One feature I thought was pretty cool was the fact that the seals are molded into the intake.. no gaskets to screw with!
This is just to make due and get the car back on the road for now.... then I will be looking into a DOHC swap. I will be going to the track next week to see how it works..
Glad to see you're already enoying the new car. I heard your compression goes up when switching to PI heads on a non-PI 4.6 (Not 100%). Sounds like you're going to have fun playing with this too.
are you going to port match the heads to the new intake?
Not right now, I dont have time for that, I need this car for my daily driver. I have already taken the White Cougar off the road for awhile, and there werent suposse to be any issues with this car. Should have known better. LOL:rollin:
Ain't that the truth. Just replaced the oil filter adapter gasket. What a PITA :punchballs:
New update:
here is the leak. Apperantly the thermostat housing was either tightened to tight, or someone was too rough taking the old one out and cracked it right down and almost in half!
In this pic you can see where I tried to JB weld it for now... I guess that fixed that leak and made the pressure build and show the one at the thermostat..
And here is how it sits for now, waiting on the rest of my parts to arrive today
(http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb170/1WLDBRD/1996%20XR7/DSC06475.jpg)
Nice work, that's how my '94 is looking right now. That car will fly once you get that new intake installed. I talked to one guy who just did a PI intake, head swap and a shot of nitrous and was doing mid/low 13's 1/4 mile. keep us updated.
She is done and warmed up, now I am about to retorque the bolts and go for a test rip.... pics and videos soon...
she is done:

The plugs and wires are soaked (and probably ruined) so it isnt running right, once I change them I will have some videos. Hoping to get it out to the track this weekend...
Well she is still running great. The intake made a big diference in the seat of the pants dyno... waiting for a decent day to take it to the track. Hopefully this weekend!
Here are some interior shots I took the other day as well as a quick underneath shot...

It doesn't have auto climate control? Mine does and it's just a 3.8 car. That's odd.
just got done finishing what a previous owner started....
when I bought it, someone had painted the front chrome trim, black (which I have to redo as it wasnt a very good job).... so I finished the rest of the job and blacked out not only the trim, but also the tail light trim and the grill.. I think it looks MUCH better now...

That video is pretty cool. Wait until you start messing around with the transmission and firm up the shifts; it gets very addictive.
Good stuff! Keep it comin'.
looks waaaaay better...... AS for the vid........ NO BURNOUTS??????????? geeze, i love watching your 88 burnout vids..........
lol, This car doesnt have the trac loc yet:toilet:... I should be installing it soon though. One wheel peel vids are gay, LOL...
I wanta see some 88 burnout vids.:burnout:
go on youtube.com and type in 1WLDBRD... Those are all videos of my cars... ;)
I just got done installing a super coupe 8.8" center pot, with trac loc and 3.27's... apparently it already had those gears, just on an open diff...
Out with the old:

Both tires now spin! LOL... gotta get a better vid (and get someone to hold the camera. LOL) when the wind dies
Sounds like you are loving the hell out of this new toy. Its kind of neat to see an MN12 being built up on here.
hell i could post up my SC build. Its been a pain so far but its getting there.
now thats more like it!!!!!! loove the vids, and thanks
installed a mint set of '89 XR-7 rims with brand new rubber, and just got done tucking the tailpipes up in the bumper... looks much better now.

goes in the body shop monday morning to get the driverside fixed where that old broad hit me...
Looking good :D
How hard was the diff install? I have 3.27's in mine but with the 1 tire fire, always wanted to go trac lok but though it was too much of a PITA
it was actually failry easy. had it done in about an hour and a half in my back yard, with no air tools.
Awesome work so far, dude. I like seeing another MN12 around here; I always feel like an outcast without a Fox.
I was lucky that my '96 came from the factory with the T/L 3.27 rear. Even after 100k miles it still rolls 'em both.
Now you need to paint your headlights and corners. It looks wicked on a black '96-'97. PM me if you need instructions.
Finally found some use for my old sc diff eh ron...
hahah yep, I finally put it too use Chris...
As for the lights, that does look good, that is how I did my 88 Tbird. But, I have a better idea..... my body man is tinting them monday when the car goes in. he will be using clearcoat tinted with a little black pearl... should look nice...
My rental this week is a freaking PT Cruiser... YEA! not...
Update:
My buddy sent me a few pics of the work they have done today:
The steel they used to fabricate the rocker section is a bit thicker then the factory stuff, and it was coated with POR15 in back, so rust should never be an issue there again. While it was there I had them remove the emblem and weld up the holes:
I also had my buddy tint my headlights for me... LOVE IT!!!:

Should have it back tomorrow.....
Niiiiiiice, that thing looks sick!
Looks great! I really like the headlights.
Love it, that is looking sweet. Headlights are a very nice touch.
very nice car
Wow, that's pretty impressive, RJ! You're making that car really awesome for the next owner. ;)
Lol!
LOL, yeah I know. actually this one might stick around for a few years. Got a lot of ideas for it performance wise....
She is back, and looks better then ever!! Only issue I have with it, is it looks so nice that it makes the rest of the car look like now, LOL...
