I'm a mechanic with some older Fords so a local high school kid asked if I could do some work on his '88 XR7. One of the problems is the ear for the alternator bracket is busted off. I figured the ones on eBay (http://"http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=390058487139") listed for '79-93 Mustangs would be the same. But before I bought one I asked two of the sellers for the part number and both replied with E7TA-10239-FA. The part number off of the broken '88 bracket is E5AE-10239-BA. I called two different Ford parts departments and both told me that the brackets are NOT the same but they couldn't tell me what was different. They look identical in the pictures. So...can anyone tell me if they'll work or what I'd have to modify to get one to work? Or where I can find the correct bracket?
Thanks,
Derek
it will work
It will NOT work...
Not unless you also use the rest of the Mustang accessories and brackets, as they sit closer to the engine.
It's also the reason why the ac eliminator kits do not work on Tbird/Cougar 5.0's...
i suppose thesmog pump eliminator doesnt work
either because of this.thanks for the info. never
knew what the difference was.--irv
Junkyard should have lots of them. The Alt bracket is easy to remove. 5 bolts and the whole thing comes off. 3 Bolts to the head, 1 bolt from the back of the alt to the intake, 1 bolt in the back of the smog pump.
Are you guys sure the alternator bracket is different??? I know the A/C - P/S brackets are different, but really don't know about the alt...
if anything you would need a slightly shorter belt to run the mustang bracket.
i know that it will put it in the right spot for the belt ot hit it because i ran mustang underdrives on my car for a while.
Even if it is I cant see how it would interfere with the other brackets. It hangs off the left side of the engine. Maybe those little support bars are different lengths? Maybe it would change the belt length.
I can even pull one from the JY for you if you pay part plus ship. Website lists 10.50 +2.00 for entry for the bracket, and Id imagine another 15 or so in shipping. Your friend would save himself that 15 dollars going to a local yard though.
It is from a 5.0 right?
No the Smog pump eliminator bracket works fine. I have one on my car so I know ;)
I was tempted to just buy the Mustang one and try to make it work...but it isn't my car so I don't want to rig it if I can help it...or be out the money for a part that doesn't work.
If you could get me a bracket that would be great. The small junkyard in my town doesn't have one and the next closest yards are 40+ miles...and they are pretty expensive. Plus I work two jobs AND do mechanic work on the side so unless I charge labor for travel time I'm loosing money myself. I'll PM you details. Thanks!
The Mustang bracket is the same as ours.I have one on my Sport right now.The Mark VII will also work but uses a larger alternator.
I will get the bracket but I guess I misread your post as you were trying to help out a student. I hope you're cutting him a break on labor.
I will send you a PM with details.

acording to the l-m parts book, mustang ,bird ,cougar,
and mark are the same part #-E5AZ-10A313-A
[89 book]
this was through 88-book doesnt go farther--edit
Mark VII that use the 100A external regulator alt, have a bracket with wider spacing than the the Bird's and Stangs(I do know that for a fact)...
I agree with you TurboCoupe50. I found out the hard way that the Mark VII Alt bracket is wider than the Bird's and Stang, after I had already Powdercoated it..argh!
So if anyone want's a nicely powdercoated Mark VII Alt bracket...I have one.
what year marks did they come on?
I saw a couple in the yard and the alternator they had was HUGE. I think a 3G upgrade is much more likely for me.
If it helps, you can get a 3G alternator from a 3.8 Taurus, and it'll fit right on to the Mark VII bracket.
OR you can get a 3G from a 3.0 Taurus and it'll fit your stock bracket...
This is tru(what TC50 said) if you already have that bracket (stock).Either way,you have the info needed to get it going now.
Thanks. Ive already done the research. I also found out that you can get a 175a inline fuse from a late model cougar (99ish) in a nice plastic case.
I just wanted to thank everyone for their help on this forum. Sometimes I join forums looking for help and get ran off because I haven't contributed...glad to see you aren't like that!
I got the bracket from danzajax today and got it put on...it was the same part number as the broken one. Weird thing was that the regulator plug hit the bracket and wouldn't let me get the upper alt. mounting bolt in. I ended up clearancing the bracket slightly with a grinder and then smoothing it out with a hand file and it seems to have worked good. I compared the regulator plug to alt. case height with my '88 Bronco's alternator and it was only .08-.09" taller so I don't think that would be enough for the clearance issues I had. Oh well, it is on there now.
Your welcome. Glad it worked out.:D
I'm glad there was an ending to the story.I hate never hearing the results.Glad you got your answer to your bracket issue solved.
