Post by: vinnietbird on June 12, 2009, 09:04:45 PM
I just sold my chrome Cobra R wheels and have decided on this set as a replacement.Any opinions from the group?

Not my thing but I like them more than what you have now. If you like them, get them. Either way, I wouldn't ever do chrome rims - not my thing. If these come in different colors, any reason for this one? Just curious.

I like the idea of 17x10 rear wheels in 4 lug.I think with the color of my Sport, these will look really nice.I also do like the Cobra R wheels in chrome, but,I want wider rear tires and wheels.Plus,I haven't seen them on anyone else's car around this forum.Something different.

It really is a tough call between the wheels I listed above, and some 14x6 steelies with caps, but,I figured I'd try the bigger wheels first. If it doesn't work out, then hellooooooooo hubcaps !!! LOL.

I think we need a picture show with the diff wheels on the car to decide. Then we could vote on it.

Not a big fan of those vin,too many spokes in my opinion.
However if you like then that's all that matters.
They do make others in deep dish 4 lug.
I know you just sold the r's but the deep dish r's painted with your cars body color in the middle would look sick.

Spoke hub caps and white walls. That almost stopped me from buying my Bird. I bought it back in 1990, so I was quite a bit younger and I was actually in the market for another Mustang, I couldn't find what I was looking for and the Bird just looked like an old man's car. My Dad talked me into test driving it and as soon as I drove it and found out it had a 5.0 in it, I had to have it. Now look at it, I'm the old man, and the Bird looks better than ever!! At least in my opinoin.

I love those wheels! I am also considering them for my Tbird restoration since I really need to go to a conventional tire size and I do not feel like going to the trouble of changing everything to five lugs.

I've been looking a lot more, and still can't find any 10 inch wheels for the Sport (for the rear). These are the wheels I think I'll order in a couple of hours.

Those are knockoffs of the 10th anniv Cobra rims. The real deal rims look alot better to me for some reason. A guy here in town has those on a 2002 GT and they just look like the spokes are too big or something. I love the rims though! I had planned on putting a set on my car since no one else had them but I still got one other set up my sleve! lol

They don't have a listing for the 17x9 and 17x10 wheels (in 4 lug) with tires,so,I've asked them for their best deal with 245 40 17's up front and 275 40 17's out back. It'll be Monday before I get a response.I'll keep you guys posted.I can't wait.Right now I have a TC wheel and a turbine wheel out back (same tire height),and a ten hole and 20th ann. Cougar turbine up front....UGLY !!!!!!

They do make them in 10's as i did see them at one point.
Send them an email.

I've made my decision,the 10th anniversary wheels (17x9 and 17x10),and 255 40 17's up front,and 275 40 17's out back.There.

Title: Time for a change....New pics added June 25 ....
Post by: dominator on June 14, 2009, 08:19:09 AM
Should work ok.
The front will be pushed outwards a bit and the rear a little more in than mine.
May interfere with your quad shock if you have them, flipping them around should work if necessary.

Mine will be for everyday use.I have their phone number and will call them tomorrow morning so I can order soon after.I saw the 5 lug deep dish Cobra R wheels (painted centers,17x9 and 17x10).I'll ask them about a 4 lug set without rivets and see what they say.I'm probably going to stick with the 10th anniversary wheels.I haven't seen them on anyone else's car around here.I'm unsure whether or not to go with 245 or 255 tires up front.Probably 255's.

I just made the order.I am getting the 10th anniversary wheels with 255 40 17's up front,and 275 40 17's out back.They should be here in 4 days.Pics 20 minutes after that.

I have faith in ya, everything else has turned out great that you've done, I'm these will be the same. Although it might be a shock to the system seeing it with the new wheels, you'll just have to step back and stare at it for a while.

I'll make a new banner picture, and post some before and after shots. The before.....as in,right now,is pretty fugly. Those wheels really look like .The new ones should be here Friday.I'm off Friday !! I just remembered that. That means wash, wax, new rolling stock install.I'm actually a little excited.I've been through a few sets of wheels, and these will probably be the last set for the Sport.I think with the 17x10's out back,I'll be satisfied.I always did want wider tires.I drove the car with the py wheels and tires today, and what a difference the lower profile tires make.I miss them already, and the new ones won't get here fast enough.

That was the quickest sig change I have ever seen! I think the centers painted body color would look pretty good-maybe somebody could photoshop it so we can see how they would look.

I'm not changing anything about the new wheels except the center caps. The gun metal gray stays in the center. They should look pretty good on the Sport.Especially the deeper rear wheels.

I like those wheels a lot! I have been eyeballing those for the final stage finishing touch of my eventual completed restoration. It's hard finding a set of wheels I truly like. They have a factory look, four lugs and are different from the all too common five spoke look. I am disappointed that I cannot afford to use the original TRX wheels with the Michelin tires outrageous in price. My alternatives were finding a set of turbine Mustang GT/Cougar wheels. The Mustang five spoke pony wheels and ten hole Mustang GT/Thunderbird/Cougar wheels just don't seem fresh enough to stand out. I do prefer to stay with something that is OEM or an OEM accessory look.

Do you mean why did I call them Cobra R's,or why did I pick them?

If you want to know why I called them that,it's because the company titles them as such in the listing. If it's why did I pick them, well,I like the style and haven't seen them on any of our style of cars yet (someone may be using them, but i haven't seen them),and I like my car to be different. Also,I like the fact that they can be had in 17x10's/I couyld've gotten wheels similar to the other first gen. Cobra R 5 spoke wheels, but in deep dish,BUT,that was too much like what I just sold.I figured.........If I'm getting all new wheels, get something different than what I just got rid of,so,the rest is history.Monday morning is the delivery day,and truthfully,I already feel like a kid at Christmas.LOL..

The car is REALLY dirty. No time for cleaning lately (tomorrow morning...CLEAN BIRD).I need to add a few pounds of air to each tire, but other than that,I love them.I'll have a full side view,3/4 view and rear view of the Sport for everyone tomorrow.

Yep,still have the old drum brakes.I may eventually add a disc rear, but for now,the car stops great,no issues,so I figured it could wait. One day,I'll find a super cheap TC around here ,I'll buy the car and do the swap.No hurry.

The header panel got hit in the parking lot.It SHOULD be fixed by Thursday. The new one is supposedly being painted at some point today.

I don't really have any new interior shots.I'll grab a few after I do the cleaning.I'll include the push to start panel as well.

Kitz.....What makes you think I'm selling these?LOL.I really like these wheels.Totally different look than the chrome Cobra r wheels I had,and I haven't seen any cars around here with these wheels. There are a few with the wheels like I had a couple of weeks ago, but, they are all Stangs.I think I may go Stang hunting today.LOL.This town wreaks of Mustangs.......everywhere.

I like the low profile tires.Tall tires always remind me of truck tires.I only have one page of things left to do for the Sport.....which is about 30 things.I think the next real job is the differential swap. After that, who knows. The diff. takes priority though.

Ah ok. Now you just need to paint the front brake calipers and rotor (not the part where the pads touch ;)).

Have you thought about just getting your seats recovered? That's the easiest way to get the seat color you want.

I've thought about having them covered, but thought I'd try replacements first.I can get new seat covers through the Mustang resto places.I'm patient, one way or the other,it'll all come together.

I got the header panel on a few minutes ago.Pics in the morning. It's dark out there now.I'll have pics probably around 8:00 in the morning.I'll be up around 6,and waxing at 7,then pics.Man,the Sport looks GOOOOOOOOOOD !!! No bird emblem on the header panel,it is a "made in Taiwan" header panel.Still new though.I have to admit,it went on easier than the factory piece.Either way, better than a hole in the front end.I have another header that Jery sent me,and it will be receiving heavy mods.I'll have more on that later. It'll be the only one of it's kind, and very functional.Again.the Sport looks GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!

Very happy!! Not as happy as you I'm sure. Car looks great! The header panel actually looks good without the bird. I thought your Bird was lowered? Or is it the wheels making it a little taller?
Title: Time for a change....New pics added June 25 ....
Post by: vinnietbird on June 25, 2009, 10:39:19 AM
It was lowered a couple of inches up front. The rear is stock. It was REALLY high in the front.I need it where it is.If it were any lower,I'd se the front spoiler every time I drive up the driveway or hit a speed bump.I like the lowered look, but,I need function above all else.

Post by: 1Bad88tbird on June 25, 2009, 11:07:22 AM
Mine is lowered all the way around using the correct springs for the Bird but the rear saggs. I'm considering going back to a stock spring for the rear or I've seen blocks you could use to raise the rear a little. But for now it'll stay the way it is.
Your Bird looks great, no doubt about it!

I'm using SN-95 Mustang front springs.Like I stated above,I need the car to be very functional, and I do NOT like the idea of having to nearly stop the car to cross over a speed bump or Rail Road track.I may drop the rear a little, but not much.I have the ChuckW shock adapters (2 sets),and will be going to Stang shocks, and maybe,SN-95 rear springs (as an experiment).I don't know if they will drop it a little,a lot,or not at all.I haven't really looked into it yet.For now,I'm very happy.

About the smooth header panel.I like it,but,I do miss the Bird emblem.Oh well, better than the busted panel I did have. After I unbolted it from the fenders and bumper cover,it literally came off in two pieces. The only thing holding the header together ion the middle was the Bird emblem.LOL.Either way,I'm glad she's back in shape.I have an idea for the header panel emblem, but,it'll be a surprise.

Hey Vinn. Did you happen to see the Jan. 02, issue of Hot Rod magazine? (I actually have the artical, that's how I know the date). But there's an 87 black with goast flames T-Bird, the guy somehow grafted the floating bird emblem onto the header panel. I don't know if you can look it up in the archieves or if that's even what you're thinking of doing. It's worth giving it a look anyhow, it's a sweet Bird.

Looks better than i thought it would but the stance.......
I understand your function comment but you have to pay to play and the cost of looks goes against the cost of function.

Post by: 50tbrd88 on June 25, 2009, 11:28:25 PM
I think the stance looks OK.  Yeah sure it would look a little better lower, but I know what its like to have a lowered car.  It looks cool but it rides like a dump truck and ses fairly easily...so I know where you are coming from Vin.

Keep up the good work.

Well, like I said,I like the function of  being able to haul a lot of groceries, some kids,or whatever with no problems. The car is an excellent all around car. It's pretty quick, rides great, can actually take corners well (considering the "4x4 stance"),and gets a lot of compliments everywhere we go.It stands out in the crowd, and not like anyone else's.The front of my can't go any lower with the Mach 1 spoiler and still take any kind of incline or speed bump. The rear is just about how I like it.Not jacked up like back in the 70's,and I do NOT want the car to look like I'm carrying 500 pounds of bricks in the trunk.I don't understand the "pay to play" thing. If I have to give up function for looks, forget it.I personally think the car (yes,I'm prejudice towards the Sport) is a really good, well balanced car.Looks, performance, and my own ideas spread throughout, not a copy of anyone else's by any means. You CAN have looks and function ,which,I think the Sport does........in my own opinion (I'm on the inside looking out on this subject). It's my saved salvage yard car.

Post by: ZondaC12 on June 26, 2009, 12:50:03 AM
Vinnie....those wheels go great on the Sport. Honestly the first thing I thought of was the script Thunderbird emblem :rollin: I really do like that a lot, thats so unique. The car must get so much attention, gotta be kinda well-known I would think.

My driveway being one of them, there are a lot of steep inclined entrances and places where even a mildly lowered car will not be able to go. Really makes the vehicle a lot less practical and enjoyable anywhere you go. Im happy with the stance of mine, yours looks good too. Doesnt really scream "4x4" to me. Im sure the rest of your family appreciates the pracitcal side of the Sport. :D

okay, looks like the IP was the problem.  Can see the pics now.

Vinnie, I want to tell you a story.  A friend took me to a restaurant where we had was can best be described as asian fajitas, assembled by us from three platters of gawd-awful looking stuff (not a big asian food fan).  I put one together and loved it, it tasted great.  Intrigued by the successful combination of scary foods, I sampled each thing individually.  Most tasted like  by themselves, but together were delicious.

"What's the point," you ask?  If you'd asked my opinion on just about everything you've done to your car, at each point, I'd have said "no thanks, try something different", esp the wheels and paint.  But just like that funky asian fajita, everything you've done works and works well.  Well done.

Thanks a lot,I appreciate that.I really do a lot of thinking before I do or add anything.I try to look at the "big picture".How well does it "fit" the overall look.Does it look like it belongs?Does it look like everyone else's (which is a no-no).I even have a notebook that has a few lists in it.....what I have....What I want/need......what I need to do.....and drawings/sketches of ideas that I need to fab,or at this point, already have.......and copies of info that I need or will need.....It's like a big blueprint so to speak.

I do appreciate all you guys.I like to hear the comments (positive and negative). It gives my a good overall look at what the outside world sees that I may not.

I like it all, right down to the smooth header panel. You did a great job for a car that would have seen the crusher. I've never been a fan of green cars, but this one is my only exception for some unknown reason to me. You did good, and it was free on top of it. Hopefully we'll have our cars together at Catjam one year, and we can sit down and try to figure out who's new parts actually came off of who's cars. ;) ......... I've lost track already. LOL

Your threads both are inspirational to my project. I try to spend no more than 50 dollars out of every paycheck, which, since i get paid every other week, equals to 25 bucks a week...so budget is the name of my game, and I too have a list of stuff, although it's nothing exotic like new wheels or paint (yet). I just get impatient, but I really try not to, cause that's when mistakes get made, and this car will not be half-assed. I love the green paint...would like mine to be something like that, but I don't want to be labeled as a copy-cat...for now anyway, my plans involve nothing more thn black primer after some basic bodywork. I've got a long long time to make it what my ultimate vision is. There's about 5 or cars on this site that really impress me, and while I won't drop names or kiss ass, lol, they all make me want to someday have a car that everyone, no matter if it's a young kid, or a die-hard Chevy guy, or even a Honda kid, all turn and say, ", that is one sweet ride."

Nothing, but nothing is gonna get in my way, although it may slow me down at times, lol.

Anyway, not to derail V-man's thread, he's got a ton of sweat and work in that car, and it for sure stands out. :D

Cougarcragar....as far as the smooth header panel,I'm still adjusting to it.I miss the "bird" in it,but,I do love it a lot more than the one with the huge gaping hole in it...........I mean cooling duct.

I liked the cooling duct! It was assymetrical in true SVO style... LOL!

Seriously thought I would miss the bird on the front!

Yep, they look as good as I thought they would. Looking forward to seeing your plan for the header panel.

I'm working on that idea on paper, and will get "hands on" the project when I get back home.I need to find a TC header panel emblem (the Bird).Mine is broken.I have forever to get it done, but I hope it doesn't take that long.LOL.

It'd like to see pics, lol.

Vin,
Have you noticed your car running warmer with the Turbocoupe nose on it? Apparently that's why the 5.0 cars have a grill. I'd like to change mine over but it gets in the upper 90's here and don't want to create an overheat condition (especially with A/C).
BTW... Your clean emblem-less nose is much better looking than one with the emblem.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but vinnie...wow...I hate that I've been away from the forum for a while because your car looks absolutely stunning.  I saw the updated pic of your car on the forum banner and had to come see for myself haha.  Love the wheel choice (I've always been a sucker for gunmetal wheels with chrome lip...obviously) and all the little details you've done to it really came together great.  If you ever feel the need to donate the car, feel free to send it my way!!!  :D

Thanks a lot for taking the time to check it out.I have to post pics, but I installed the compass mirror,"bug eye" dome light, and explorer sun visors.Just a few more pieces of the big puzzle.I still have a whole list of things I need to do,but slowly but surely it's coming together.I took a long time looking at wheels,chrome.Black.Gun metal.Silver....etc....These just really seemed to be THE wheels my car needed.I wanted something I didn't see every day,and looked "different",yet "right".I think they work well with the color of the car as well.Again,Thanks a lot for checking it out after all this time.

By the way Kingcars, have you left us for the Stang forum.I don't mind you cheating on us a little as long as we're your "primary",but if we're not the main forum,we have issues.LOL.

Yeah it's definitely coming together.  I also went through the same thought process when choosing wheels.
