I was going to go with a D&D kit before I stopped my project. It's an easy swap.

The shifter should be very close to the stock mustang t5. At one point in time I had about 3 full pages of text I copy and pasted with 6 speed swap information. If I recall correctly the 6 speed is very similar to the 5 speed as far as the shifter goes.

I have "seen" 3 5.0 based cat/birds and one turbo coupe 2.3 with a 6 speed. No info on any of them though cause i suck like that. In the 5.0 cars its an easy swap. It can be expensive though. It can be done "on the cheap" but its still "expensive. Id wager 1000 to 1500 easy. Mine was about 1300 by the time i was rowing gears with it and that was in the stang. Although, i suspect the only real difference would be the speedo. Cat/birds are electronic as well are they not?

yes sir...for sure '87-'88, assuming 84-86 are as well, but no idea on the 83's.

I noticed on that website you can get a manual 6 speed or an electronic six speed.

Are they talking about the speedo cable system?

yeah it's not a difficult swap. if i can do it anyone can. I got the D&D kit with a Zoom clutch, crossmember, short throw shifter, aluminum driveshaft, clutch cable, clutch quadrant and firewall adjuster. It can be done much cheaper than the route I went. I did what I did because a friend owed me money for a 69 Camaro so he just put a bunch of Ford parts on his credit card for my Thunderbird.

If I was to do it again I would just get an Aerostar driveshaft and make my own crossmember.

Electronic speedo sending unit in the cable hole just like my stock AOD. Just needed the Autometer sending unit for my gauges.

yes. prices for their T56 are kind of redonculous. I went with a 03-04 cobra T56 out of a 11k mile wreck. I don't need the viper spec and did not want to pay over 2-3 times the cost for it. I cant see breaking this trans at my power levels. 1st is a little tall with this trans (as is the viper spec but with the viper you get .50 6th) so gears are a must. The frpp 00R trans has a better 1st gear ratio. I had elected to delete the reverse lockout as it wasn't worth hooking up and really isn't needed. All i needed was a hybrid U-joint, cross member and shortened my frpp aluminum drive shaft. Again, this is in a 2000 mustang but the process would be the same or similar. You would need a different bell housing which might be pricey to acquire.

The frpp cross member is only like 60 bucks but im not sure if it would work on the fox tbird/cougar. Wouldn't be hard to make one or mod one to work though.

What can I say, I've been around the block a few times. ;)

But now that you mention it, I have no idea how I have that many posts. Probably that music thread.

I actually left those posts numbers at the old forum.

86Elan, I totally forgot you did the 6-Speed swap. My memory must be going at my old age. :p

I'm thinking about a nice T56 swap when I can afford it...but I really want the viper spec with the .50 6th gear so I can put my 3.73 rear behind it and still get crazy good gas mileage on the highway...I doubt if it's really worth the cost at this point being as I'm currently broke.

I have heard it is possible to swap the cobra .62 6th in favor of the viper .50 but you have to do the 5th/6th cluster. I had called D&D and they said it wasnt possible but im willing to bet it is. I just havnt done the research. Ideally, Id like to have the '00R T56 with the Viper overdrive.

FWIW, i still get decent mileage with My 410s but im not sure what it is et. When i still had 327s with the cobra t56 i could average high 20s easy with a best of 31.3.

im @ about 2 grand/60-65 and about 2400 @ 75ish with the cobra t56 and 410s. I used to be 2 grand at 75 with the 327s
