This has got to be the fastest and cleanest way to change an in tank fuel pump. :hick: :D

Since we got all that snow the other day, I didn't feel like crawling under my cougar in a mud puddle to change the pump. So this was my way around it. Cut an access hole out of the floor. :hick: As you will note from the pictures, it took me a couple triies with the cut off wheel to find the pump. :rollin: :hick:
Now I just gotta be careful I don't blow my as* off when I weld it closed. :flame:
PS. This is NOT the way I would recommend doing the job, but when you don't plan to drive the car for much longer.... Do it the fastest way possible. :rollin:
hah as i said on CN.. don't weld it back on.. Put a hinge on it for future access!
And a miniature door . Maybe a peep hole to make it extra pimp.

In the time you cut the hole,and hinge it,or weld it,and also change the pump,you could,ve changed the pump twice the old way.I just lower the tank on a big floor jack with a 12" x 12" piece of wood on it,swap pumps,and lift it right back up.
Takes me about half an hour to change pumps but,i do have my hoist at work available to me so it makes it alot easier.
I rigged up a fuel transfer pump and pumped the remaining fuel into my Buick. Once the fuel is out, the tank is super easy to manipulate by myself. Even did it in the parking lot at my apartment in about 45 minutes. Changing the pump with the rusty lock rings was a c that took more than an hour of banging with a hammer.

I got one better! Just wait for your straps and the bolts to rust out and drive the car for about two weeks. Then his a couple speed bumps and the whole tank will fall out!

I'd just make a new cover out of sheetmetal about 1" bigger all around then the piece you cut out and screw it into place and put some sealer around it. Lots of newer cars have access panels to get to the fuel pump....my wife's Escort has one under the rear seat. 4 screws, off comes the cover and there it is.
My bro is going to do this to his Cougar as his pump is getting noisey. The tank is a real bitch to get out of one of those cars ( exhaust and driveshaft have to come off to get it out.)
Just wanted to say thanks, I did your cut out idea yesterday and I think it saved a few hours rather then dropping a half filled tank.

hours? i had access to a lift, and a tranny jack, had my tank in and out quick, 5 minutes out, like 7 minutes in, because i had a hard time getting the filler neck in

Welded up the patch yesterday, and only caught the tank on fire 8 times lol. Talk about a b*tch to blow a gas fire out throw a little slit in the floor! :crazy:
